You will be asked to 5 OUR METHODS OF AUCTION Modern Method of Auction The Modern Method of Auction is different to traditional auction procedures in the UK, in that it is conditional. This means that the sale is not legally binding once a bid is accepted. When a bid is accepted the buyer is allowed a 28 day period of reservation in which to achieve exchange of contracts, at which point the sale becomes legally binding, (i.e. the buyer is bound to buy and the TRADITIONAL AUCTION vendor is bound to sell). The 28 day period starts from when the buyer’s solicitor is in receipt of draft contracts. A further 28 day period is authorised to achieve completion of contracts, and at this point MODERN AUCTION legal transfer of title takes place and keys and monies change hands. Traditional Method of Auction This is an Unconditional Auction where on acceptance of an offer or on the fall of the hammer the buyer will pay up to a 10% deposit and exchange of contracts is immediate. Both parties are then legally bound to buy and sell. Traditional Auctions are mainly used by the investment market for properties that attract significant interest from professional investors. The residential sector can find it harder to buy through a traditional auction because there is a limited amount of time to put finance in place, meaning many purchases through a traditional auction are cash based. The application site comprises approximately 5.5 hectares of agricultural land and semi derelict former allotments bordered by hedgerows to the northern edge of Ushaw Moor. Immediately to the south of the site lies Ladysmith Terrace which hosts detached garages of varying condition on its northern side and residential terraced properties to on its southern side. To the south east lies a relatively modern development of detached properties at Welby Drive. To the west of the site is agricultural land and to the north, a willow plantation. The eastern side of the site is bordered by Whitehouse Lane which runs on a north – south axis between Bearpark and Ushaw Moor. Beyond this road lie residential properties at Whitehouse Court, some of which face westwards, towards the site. 2. With Ushaw Moor lying on the northern side of the Deerness Valley, the site naturally slopes downwards from north to south to significant extent, with south eastern corner lying some 20m below the north western corner. 3. (An Old Alumnus of Ushaw College)1 The city of Durham is known internationally for its rich medieval manuscript collections, both in its Cathedral Library and in the University Library’s Special Collections on Palace Green, thanks in no small measure to the highly productive scriptorium and well-stocked monastic library of Durham’s medieval Cathedral Priory. Indeed, efforts are now well underway to recreate these collections and reunite their surviving books digitally, thus augmenting both access to and awareness of them on a global scale. Perhaps less well known is Durham’s other home for medieval manuscripts, located just a few miles from the peninsula upon which the aforementioned repositories are sited: the Big Library of the former Catholic seminary of Ushaw College near Ushaw Moor, founded in 1808. Ushaw’s Big Library is aptly named, for it easily – and quite deliberately – rivals, in splendour, size and contents, the great College libraries of Oxford and Cambridge.2 Built to house the College’s burgeoning book collections, its construction was completed in 1851 after a design by Charles and Joseph Hansom; a previous design by famed architect Augustus Pugin had been rejected, less for aesthetic reasons than precisely because it was deemed too small.3 Owing to its original purpose as a domestic library purely for staff and seminarians, Ushaw Library’s rich collections were not publicly accessible until 1 An Old Alumnus, Records and Recollections of St.

DA UNTON MINERS' HOUSES: SOUTH WALES AND THE GREAT NORTHERN COALFIELD, 1880-1914 Accidents of personal biography are perhaps not the most sensible way by which to select topics for historical research, yet it was a fortuitous move from Cardiff to Durham which created an initial curiosity about the char- acter of the coalfields in the two areas. No one could miss the difference of landscape between, on the one hand, the linear communities stretching along the deep and narrow South Wales valleys, amidst soaring mountains and spoil heaps and, on the other hand, the sprinkling of nucleated pit villages within the drab, undulating topography of County Durham. The belief that a comparison of these areas might be a topic of more than purely personal interest arose from two considerations. The first was a growing dissatisfaction with much traditional labour history. The contrast between the South Wales and Great Northern coalfields had in fact been studied by a number of authors, but in an attempt to explain why South Wales was militant and the North-East moderate. It is not simply that this problem is misspecified for most of the nineteenth century, but that it neglects many other matters which, it could be argued, were of greater significance. There has been a general over- emphasis in British labour history upon the institutions of the organised workers, and particularly in circumstances of conflict. This has been true of no group more than the miners. The spate of histories commissioned by the miners in the various coalfields has been overwhelmingly concerned with the creation of the bureaucratic machinery, the struggle between moderates and militants for control, the analysis of strikes, and the changing political loyalties of the miners.1 The result has been to neglect some of the most significant aspects of the life of the mining communities 1 On these two coalfields, W.

    A HISTORY OF CLUB CRICKET IN COUNTY DURHAM Chapter One..........The eighteenth century In the beginning The first recorded cricket match in Durham was at Raby Castle in 1751. It was five years after the Duke of Cumberland and bayoneted Redcoats slogged through the county’s mud on their way to the Battle of Culloden. Defoe’s account of his travels through Great Britain had not long been published. Defoe found nothing remarkable in Darlington or Chester-le-Street except “dirt” but was impressed by Lumley Castle and acknowledged Lumley coal the best in the country. He thought Durham a “compact neatly contriv’d city” where clergy lived “in all the splendour and magnificence imaginable”. Durham cathedral and Saint Cuthbert’s remains were a shrine for pilgrims but the city was a vulnerable haven riding on a cut-throat sea. The poor lived in slums; the populace was prey to vagabonds, footpads and highwaymen. The Bishop of Durham bewailed “the scorn of religion”. His flock scratched a living on the land or burrowed beneath it for lead and coal; their leisure centred upon drinking and blood sports like cock-fighting. In 1742 John Wesley came across a village “inhabited by colliers only, and as such had been always in the first rank for savage ignorance, and wickedness of every kind. Their grand assembly used to be on the Lord’s Day on which men, women and children met together to dance, fight, curse, and swear, and play chuck-ball, span farthing, or whatever came to hand.” Somehow, sometime the game of cricket took root in these parts.

Four topics - the Pease family and their business interests, life in the villages, pitwork, and industrial relations - are examined in order to assess the impact of the Peases on the conditions of life and work in their villages.
