My Memories of Flounder and Strawberry Cake When our family moved to Hanko’s Radioasemanmäki (Radio Station Hill) in 1961, my father “Gunnar på Berget” (“Gunnar on The Hill”) was mad with joy: in Hanko you could eat as much fish as your heart desired! Hanko golf story There is an interesting 18-hole golf course in Hanko. The course is a cross between a park and a forest course, with water also coming into play on several holes. The course is popular with both locals and tour- ists, and offer a challenge for players of all levels. Here is a true story from last season. Filip is a young and enthusiastic member of Hanko golf club. One afternoon he found himself with a few hours to spare. He figured if he hurried and played very fast, he could get in 18 holes before he had to head home. Just as he was about to tee off, Charles, a retired gentleman and likewise an enthusiastic and experienced golfer came onto the tee and asked if he could accompany Filip as he was golfing alone. Not wishing to refuse, Filip invited the senior gentleman to join him. To Filip’s surprise the senior golfer played fairly quickly. He didn’t hit the ball far, but played consist- ently and didn’t waste much time. Finally, they reached the 18th fairway and the young man found himself with a tough shot. There was a large pine tree right in front of his ball — and directly between his ball and the green. After several minutes of consideration and debating how to hit the shot, the senior golfer finally said: “You know, when I was your age I’d hit the ball right over that tree.” ”…past the rows of villas runs the beach promenade in a wide arc between With that challenge placed before him, the young- ster swung hard and hit the ball up, right into the top the dark green pine trees and the blue waves. Eat well in the restaurants of Hanko, each with its own story. The archipelago and the sea play a major role in many tempting menus. Fried flounder, perch, lamb and traditional archipelago style bread, or wild game, crabs and season’s vegetables? Every season has its special delicacies, which the restaurateurs in Hanko invite you to taste. In hardly any other small town is there such a versatile selection of restaurants as in Hanko.

A French Elk Safari I travelled to Finland in 2010. I am a nature traveller, and in Finland I did some hiking in different places. I went to Hanko because I wanted to see elk. On my first visit to Hanko City Tourist Office, I received a map and instructions for a bike trip to Täktom, where there are lots of elk. However, I couldn’t find any elk by myself. I went back to the tourist office and booked a guide for the evening; I had come here to see elk, and I was going to see elk! My guide and I met at my lodgings and we drove to our first stake-out place, Täktom. We walked along the fields, looking around, but the elk were still hiding from us. After a while my guide got a phone call from a farmer who knew about our trip. He told us that an elk mother and two little fawns were in his potato field!
