My father always had to get his herrings fresh, preferably straight from the trawler. As a new husband in Helsinki I had my own herring recipes, 1st of May but in Hanko we ate grilled herring. The spectra show amplification of the K1 and O1 tidal modes, but not of the M2 and S2 modes. The K1 and O1 modes have a period around 24 hours, which coincides with the estimated period of a possible fjord sieche in the Gulf of Finland. Despite a stronger astronomical forcing, M2 and S2 are much weaker in the spectra.

Prange This dissertation is an analytical examination of material published by the Soviet Union which concerned the Winter War with Finland from 30 November 1939 to 12 March 1940. The events leading to the conflict grew out of Russian efforts to protect their northwestern borders after the defeat of Poland in September 1939. Diplomatic pressures enabled the Soviet Union to establish air and naval bases along the Baltic coast in Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania by the end of October 1939. However, efforts to obtain similiar concessions from Finland, especially the leasing of Hanko at the mouth of the Gulf of Finland, proved unsuccessful.
