I hope you are enjoying the beginnings of spring. I hope you have had some wonderful days driving your PMCs all around this beautiful Southern California landscape, enjoying July the sunshine and all that California can offer you. 18 Tech Meet March was quite a month of activities for RROC. Then there were gas pumps, balancing scales, hook rugs, neon lights, 1 Board Meeting vintage safes, children’s riding toys, and so much more. Then Hosts: Larry and Gary Ewaska March continued with a judge’s seminar and that was followed by a Palm Springs breakfast meet that had over thirty 8 Technical Meet participants. Host: Ronny Shaver The end of the month gave us the ever popular Concours d’Elegance at Santa Anita. When I drove the car home it ran great until accelerating up the on Why Won’t My Silver Shadow II ramp of the freeway entrance. The car acted like it was running out of gas, but when I backed off the throttle a bit the car recovered and ran Accelerate Very Well? down the freeway at 75 mph with no problem. Once back at the shop, by Ronny Shaver I removed the carburetors to inspect the fuel float level settings. These later carburetors must be removed as a unit, turned upside down and My most recent Rolls-Royce repair challenge has been a 1980 then the bottom plates are removed to access the floats. See below: Silver Wraith II that would run great in town but be barely able to get up to freeway speed (65mph) when accelerating. It would run, idle and accelerate fine up to about 45 mph in town and seemed to have no issues. This car does not have a “C” at the end of the serial number so it is a Federal car equipped with the SU carburetors instead of Bosch CIS fuel injection. Anyone who is familiar with these cars would be surprised that the car lacked “pep” since the Series II Shadows are some of the most responsive running models. Once again I was reminded by “Mr. Murphy” on how important extensive test drives are on these cars.

The car in question came in last month with the complaint that it would act like it was stalling intermittently. The morning after the car was dropped off I started it cold and the car started up and stalled Note that the unit is very clean which means to me they have immediately. This is a common problem that is usually caused by a been off recently, in fact the floats look brand new. The floats are the sticking fuel weaker valve on the fuel overflow hose near the left front white crescent shaped parts on either side. The float bowl bottoms side of the engine oil sump. I raised the car, cleaned the gummed-up have already been removed for access. The next photo shows the float valve and had no problems after that. During the road test the car ran measurement: a little sluggish so after returning to the shop I checked the ignition timing (ok), throttle linkage operation (ok) and noticed that the vacuum advance was disconnected. So after reconnecting it the car drove fine around the block and I was satisfied. The car was in for some other work and after completion I let the customer know I found some little items wrong causing the running issues and told him they were fixed at no-charge and also that the car ran great. This is where Mr. Murphy came in.

My customer picked up the car and contacted me a few weeks later saying the car is “doing the same thing”, one of my favorite things to hear. He also found some other non-related items while driving the car The measurement is taken at the low point of the float and so we scheduled a day to bring it in. This time I asked him if the car measured against the flat part of the carburetor housing with a straight acted up when cold (which is when it acted up for me) or when it was edge. The proper setting is about 2mm below the housing. As you can warm. He stated it happened when driving the car at high speeds or see in the photo, the float is above the housing. This setting would only going up a long hill. This condition is typically caused by fuel starvation allow a small amount of fuel to be in the carburetor. See the next photo and an easy way to duplicate the driving conditions he described is for the proper setting: to put the car in low gear and accelerate up to about 40 mph. The car should accelerate up to this speed without sputtering or acting like something is pulling it backwards while trying to accelerate at the same time. The first thing to check is the fuel filter and fuel pump. This car had had the fuel pump replace with an aftermarket pump and filter assembly that looked nearly new. Hmmm. Whoever replaced it left the original canister fuel filter on in addition to the new filter on the pump. Unfortunately the mounting was inappropriate so I removed the original filter and installed the pump in a safer spot. I also ran the fuel pump for a while to make sure it was delivering enough fuel, which it was. As you can see, the lower section is about 2mm below the housing. Once both floats were set properly, the bowl covers were installed and The fuel supply system on the Series II Shadows have a continuous the assembly back onto the engine. The car was warmed up, mixtures running pump with a return line to the fuel tank. Once the fuel fills the and idle speed reset and ready for another test drive. This time the car carburetors it runs through a fuel cooler attached to the AC compressor had much more power and didn’t fall on its face when trying to get up and then back to the tank. I recently worked with a club member who to freeway speed. Why weren’t the floats set properly when they were had similar symptoms that were caused by a missing restrictor in the replaced? I’ll let you be the judge of that. fuel line exiting the second carburetor. This restrictor is a small hole that allows fuel to return to the tank, but only after the carburetors are supplied with sufficient fuel to keep the float bowls filled at all times. I Thank you for the questions and keep them coming. Please send your removed the outlet fitting at the second carburetor and found that the questions to Ronny at [email protected]. restrictor was missing, an obvious problem, so one would think. The fix was pretty easy, I soldered the hole in the fitting shut and drilled a small hole in the solder (about 1/16”), installed the fitting, drove the Happy Motoring! car around the block a few times and “assumed” the car was fixed. Mr. Ronny Murphy loves that word. MAY 2015 7 The Cover Story The Tony Hart Collection and Lunch at By Bill Sundin Café Firenze

The Continental of this period is unique in history; an important part of the decision to bring the Bentley brand back to prominence. In the S-Series days it was a lightened car, intended to improve high speed touring on the “Continent.” With the Shadow’s change to unibody construction, true coachbuilt cars from private firms became a thing of the past. This meant that Rolls-Royce could no longer produce a Continental chassis and ship it to a coachbuilder to fit a unique body to This is not it. 8 MAY 2015 RROC-SOCAL.COM RAY SCHERR AUTO COLLECTION The event took us through an incredible collection of rare and super rare guitars and musical instruments. No one wanted to leave A WINNER! and go home that day. By Thomas Warden, Past Chairman Later, when I asked Ray if he had a good time with our visit, he gave me a “thumbs up” and said he really enjoyed our members. I think he had as much fun as we did.

A beauty in orange

The Collection

On March 9, 2015, our Region visited the very private automobile and music/guitar collection of Ray Scherr in Westlake Village.

Mr. Scherr greeted about 40 of us in the most fascinating garages I have ever seen. There was an eclectic array of over 80 collectible automobiles ranging from Buicks Memorabilia to Bentleys, from new cars to 1920’s vintage cars, plus an automobilia collection of neon signs, car art, and all sorts of collectibles. Words cannot describe the overwhelming beauty of this incredible collection.

In the opinion of many of our members who visited the collection, it appears most, if not all the cars, were 100 point show cars. Ray has had seven Pebble Beach winners Collection Owner over the years. Ray Scherr

This is a world class collection occupying three garages which was shared with us by a passionate car collector. Ray was a fabulous host who told jokes about his ownership and collection experiences. He is a great storyteller. Those who could not attend missed a great day with a real car guy. Going through the collection with him was a treat, as he happily opened the hoods of various automobiles to explain the intricate workings of the engines and unique issues involving each of the cars.

Past celebrity ownership was of little interest to him. If he liked the car, he bought it. He also has restored some of them to show quality and many of the cars he purchased are already of show quality. Host Tom Warden and Penny Lipp

On March 22nd, it was a year to the day that the RROC So Cal and San Diego regions enjoyed fun in the sun at our most recent Palm Springs Breakfast Rally. It was a wonderful morning with 35 members, including 4 past chairpersons, enjoying a wonderful brunch at Si Bon in Rancho Mirage. It was great to see so many great cars out on the road.

Member of the Month

Stuart Olesker

Stuart Olesker is the Member of the Month from the March Ray Scherr Collection event. He and Jackie have been members of the RROC for six years and are the proud owners of two beautiful PMCs: a 1960 Roll-Royce Silver Cloud II Radford and a 2000 Bentley Arnage.

Stuart says that he loves driving his Silver Cloud II and that it makes it very easy to start conversations in the market parking lot and respond to all of the “high fives” that he receives on the freeway. And of course, if he forgets to shave in the morning, he can just slip out the car’s electric razor, a factory Radford option.

He thinks that the friendliness of the club is one of its best assets, as well as all of the hard work put in by the leadership of this chapter. “I love it!”

And we’re glad that you’re a member Stuart!
