Syed Ishrat Abbas (سید عشرت ؕسین) better known by his stage name Darpan (Urdu: درپن‎) was one of the original romantic heroes of the "golden age" of the Pakistan Film Industry (also commonly known as Lollywood).[1] He belonged to an educated Shia family originally from Uttar Pradesh, India where he was born in 1928.[2] His brother, Santosh Kumar, was also an actor and another brother, S. Sulaiman, is a director. He started his film career with the Punjabi film Billo in 1951.[3] After starring in a few more films produced in Lahore, he decided to travel to India to try his luck there, where he only had moderate success. Notable films from this period include Adl-e-Jahangir opposite Meena Kumari and Barati. Critics applauded his performance in Saheli in which he starred alongside Nayyar Sultana and Shamim Ara.[4] He won a Nigar Award for his performance in Saheli as well as a Presidential award. He died in Lahore on November 8, 1980.[5] Darpan was a top hero in the beginning of the 60s. He was introduced in film Amanat in 1950 and after only one more film Billo, he left Pakistan and tried his luck in Mumbai, where he appeared in two Indian films Barati and Adl-e-Jahangir. But he was more active in non-professional activities there and became one of many victims of famous Indian actress Nigar Sultana[6](who played famous Dil Araam role in classic Indian film Mughal-e-Azam and was married to director S.M. Yousuf and actor Zahoor Raja also!). Darpan came back to Lahore after a few years, where film industry was booming and he acted in first film Baap ka gunah. But he got breakthrough from his self-produced film Sathi. Raat ke rahi, Saheli, Gulfam, Qaidi, Anchal, Baji, Shikwa, Ik tera sahara and Naela were some big films in which he played vital roles. His last big film as hero was Payal ki jhankar in 1966. He was hero in Waheed Murad's two produced films Insaan badalta hai and Jab se dekha hai tumhen. He was villain in Ik gunah aur sahi and supporting actor in Khuda te maan, Jab jab phool khiley and a few other films.[7] Santosh Kumar’s real name was Syed Musa Raza. He was born in 1928 at Lahore. He graduated from Usmania University Hyderabad, India. He also passed I.C.S examination. First he got married in his own family with Mrs. Jameela Begum and then he also married with actress Sabiha. The first Nigar Award for best actor in the history of Pakistan was presented to him in film Waada. Shaam dhalay is the only movie which he produced, directed and played the lead role. He died on june 11, 1982. Akmal was the second super star of Punjabi films after Sudhir. He started his film career as a makeup artist and appeared as an extra actor in Mehbooba, Qatil and Dulla Bhatti. Jabroo in 1956 was his first film as hero but the golden era of his film career came after the great success of Choorian in 1963. His mega hit film Malangi (1965) was a peak point of his film career. He appeared as villain in Baghawat (1960) and his sudden death on June 11, 1967 made him an unforgettable film character in Pakistani Punjabi films. At the starting of his career, he was crticised that he had not acting talent and his accent is not very good etc., and sure there were some realities on these crticism. But it is a fact that Eijaz is luckiest actor that despite of his shortcoming in acting, most of his films became very successful for some other factors, not because of him, like Raaz (1959),Salma (1960) Shaheed (1962), Lakhon main aik, Badnam and Sarhad (1967), Zarqa and Dia aur toofan (1969),Anwara (1970). Above films success credit does not go to Eijaz. (Mohammed Ayub Qureshi) Habib was the third most successful film hero in both Urdu and Punjabi films after Sudhir and Ejaz. He appeared in character actor roles when he was on top of his film career in the 60s. Habib also married top Punjabi film heroine Naghma and was father of her daughter. Habib was highly educated person with triple M.A. and he was born in Indian state of Punjab... Kamal was known as comedian hero and for light roles, his face was resembled with Indian actor Raajkapoor. He is the one of our film heros who worked with a maximum number of heroines. 25 years of his film career, almost he worked with 28 film heroines. Here is a list of his films with different heroines. Born in Meerut on 27th April 1937, Kemal graduated from Meerut College and joined the film Industry at Bombay. He later moved to Pakistan and worked in over 100 films. Most famous films are Ashiana, Touba, Jokar, Aisa bhi hota hai, Sharik-e-Hayyat, Behn Bhai, Jat Kuriyaan toon darda, Ajj diyaan Kuriyaan.... Besides running his own film and TV academy in Karachi, he is also the Vice-Chairman of Pakistan Film Producers association and member of Pakistan Censor Board. (by Mohammed Ayub Quresh, Saudi Arabia) The most successful and record holder great film hero in Pakistani film history. He struggled many years from 1956 to 1970 and got breakthrough from film Babul in 1971. Basheera (1972), Wehshi Jatt (1975), Moula Jatt (1979), Sher Khan (1981) and many other superhit films made him a demand of box office. He was dominating hero in more than two decades and undefeated super star till his death. He was killed by an un-known gunman on January 9, 1996. He was a famous child star in India and acted as child artist in Bohat din howay, Booth polish, Baijoo bawra and Footpath. In Pakistan he also played young boy's role in few films like Wah re zamaney, Bedari, Masoom, Do ustad. As a hero he appeared in Nagin (1959) with Neelo, Alladin ka beta and Neelofar (1960), Taj aur Talwar, Shair e Islam and Ghazi bin abbas (1961), Husn o Ishq (1962), Baarat and Sameera (1963) Choti Ammi (1966) and Aasra (1969). (by Mohammed Ayub Qureshi) Sadiq Ali was a very successful and famous actor before partition and got the title of Prince of Minerva. He acted in many films in India like Pukar (Naseem, Sohrab Modi) Sandaisa (1939), Sikandar (1941), Blackout, Dunya tumhari hay, Phir milaingay and Ulti ganga(1942), Pathron ka sodagar (1944, first film of Meena shori who later migrated to Pakistan and worked in many films), Jagpeeti (with Surraya), Nishana(1946) Do Nainan, Manjhdar and Mitti (with Khursheed, Tansen fame, who migrated to Pakistan and worked in two films Funkar and Mandi in 1956). http://archbd.net/5ha.pdf http://archbd.net/n69.pdf http://archbd.net/mn7.pdf http://archbd.net/chk.pdf http://archbd.net/ag9.pdf.

Parvez Rana, Hassan Askari, Z.A. Zulfi, Pappu Samrat, Syed Noor, Babar Butt, and literally everyone else I met in the film industry were welcoming and hospitable beyond what I ever could have hoped or imagined. The cast and crew of Sharabi, in particular, went above and beyond to facilitate my research and make sure I was at all times comfortable and safe and had answers to whatever stupid questions I was asking that day! Along with their kindness, I was privileged to witness their industry, creativity, and perseverance, and I will be eternally inspired by and grateful to them. My committee might seem large at seven members, but all of them have been incredibly helpful and supportive throughout my time in graduate school, and each of them have helped develop different dimensions of this work.

  • Rang Sazi: Introduction and Evolution of Color Film Technology in Pakistan Zuraiz Ur Rehman Niazi
Rang Sazi: Introduction and Evolution of Color Film Technology in Pakistan Zuraiz ur Rehman Niazi Abstract This paper discusses the introduction and evolution of color film technology in Pakistani cinema. It focuses on the transitional period from the 1960s to the 1980s and highlights the major technological and practical changes in the production of films in Pakistan, contextualizing the semiotics and importance of color for this film industry. While discussing this transition from black and white to color film in Pakistan, it also connects this shift with the evolution and introduction of color film technology on a global level, including earlier technologies of color and colorization. The research is supported by a short analysis of some early Pakistani color films. Field research at Evernew Studios, one of Pakistan's oldest film studios, also sheds some light on how the industry transitioned to color film and how technology and filmmaking was affected. Keywords: Color Film Technology, Development of Pakistani Film, Pakistani Film Studios, Film Technology and Infrastructure Introduction Color films have evolved greatly since they were first introduced in Pakistan in the 1960s. Unfortunately, there is little literature available that can address the questions of the technology and techniques that were used to make color films in the country at that time. Azra (dir. Munshi Dil, 1962) is known to be the first Pakistani color film. However, color was not new to the subcontinent. Azra came out twenty-five years after the first Hindi color film Kisan Kanya (dir. Moti B. Gidwani, 1937). Early color films in the subcontinent were either hand painted or used color film stock, like those is western countries.

Average annual population growth of Lahore is 4.14% from 1998-2018, which is much higher than the average population growth rate of Pakistan which is 2.4%. According to investigations average annual groundwater depletion rate of Lahore is 1.07 m/year. As with the growth of population new housing societies are being built to accommodate the burgeoning population. These societies enhance impermeable areas, moreover, pump huge amount of groundwater from the underground water source. There should be sustainability in water pumping and water recharging. Past studies show that groundwater exploitation in Lahore is not sustainable as abstraction rates are higher as compared to groundwater recharge rates.
