It was Rosbergs weekend with a scintillating pole position and absolute dominance in the race - I don't think Jenson would have caught him, even without the fluffed pit stop. Well done to Mercedes for their continued support for F1 after what has been a tough few years for them. Great driving all down the field with lots of passing and wheel to wheel battles after a slow start as everybody conserved tyres in the early stages - third race of the year and I think we can say grand prix racing is back with a bang. Pirelli must take a lot of the credit for producing tyres that put an increased onus on the driver to make them last but the speed and reliability of the mid grid cars is a credit to the engineers and teams who have brought them into contention with the 'big boys' and in some cases got ahead of them. The prospects for the rest of the season are great with the top drivers all in competitive cars (ok, Ferrari have got to catch up a bit) and the rest ready to pounce. Curborough coming up with a slim entry so plenty of runs for everyone and after this weekends Harewood and Three Sister's points are added to the mix we'll start to get a feel of whose going to be battling it out at the top of our Championship - I already get the feel that there are two or three who are determined to give it their best shot after knocking on the door during the last couple of seasons. See you at Curborough Roger C [email protected] 4 Editors Mutterings I do hope many of you are venturing to Curborough shortly for the first of our 5 events this season. We have been unable top attract any championships other than NSCC to this popular venue so the likely- hood of multiple runs is very high and as ever, all timed runs count, so take plenty of fuel with you, there is a very high possibility that you’re going to need it! Hopefully with the support of the NSCC members we can make this event pay, otherwise with my Treasurers hat on, I’ll be voting against its inclusion next year on the grounds of profitability. All the entry forms for the July double lapper event at Curborough are available on the club website. This event traditionally fills up before the closing date and with a good smattering of championships participating this year I expect it to fill up early. Therefore advance notice that if you haven’t got your entry in yet than I advise you to do so and please re- member that I will not bank your cheques until the closing date. We should hopefully have the entry forms for the season finale at Thoresby Park available to download, just waiting for the track licence from the MSA and then the event application can be processed. I would appreciate some write ups from the Curborough event on Sun- day 22nd April. Only NSCC entrants at this event so there’s no excuse for some of you not to write down about your days exploits, and for many of you, it will be your first event of the season. Email anything you have to me or post if you prefer. Contact details on inside front and rear covers. The day before yesterday 166 Notes 175 Images 191 Introduction and acknowledgements POLITICS AND SPORT are by definition incompatible, and they're combustible when mixed. The 1930s proved that: the Winter Olympics in Germany in 1936, when the President of the International Olympic Committee threatened to cancel the Games unless the anti-semitic posters were all taken down now, whatever Adolf Hitler decrees; the 1936 Summer Games in Berlin and Hitler's look of utter disgust when Jesse Owens, a negro, won the 100 metres; the World Heavyweight title fight in 1938 between Joe Louis, a negro, and Germany's Max Schmeling which carried racial undertones and overtones. The fight lasted 2 minutes 4 seconds, and in that time Louis knocked Schmeling down four times. They say that some of Schmeling's teeth were found embedded in Louis's glove... Motor racing, a dangerous but genteel activity in the 1920s and early 1930s, was touched by this, too, and touched hard. The combustible mixture produced two Grand Prix races at Donington Park, in 1937 and 1938, which were just as dramatic, just as sinister and just as full of foreboding. This is the full story of those races.

The company is believed to have taken the decision after indications in Japan that the automotive markets are not getting any better, Honda having recently announced a 56% drop in earnings in the last quarter, compared to 2008. Prior to that the company was looking at other options, such as selling the team on to someone else. This has now been axed and the company will simply close things down and settle all the necessary contractual commitments as quickly as possible. The news, if confirmed, will be another blow to the manufacturer power in F1 as it will be the third withdrawal by a major car company in 11 months, following in the footsteps of Honda and BMW. There are also doubts about the future of Renault's factory team. The news will also be a blow to the Formula One Teams' Association, although the members have learned that working together produces much better results than trying to take on the authorities alone. It also means that there are now just three manufacturers left: Ferrari, Mercedes and Renault, and engine supply from Cosworth will become essential to ensure there are sufficient engines to go around.

  • Founded in the Year Nineteen Twenty-Four March 1980
March 1980 MOTOR SPORT Founded in the year nineteen twenty-four offices would be possible is something to be discussed. The point is that two-tier control of motoring sport is vital and should take place quickly. Note that there is no suggestion whatsoever that the RAC, which controls British motoring sport with the approval of the Government, should be overthrown; only that it must be restrained from exploiting, knowingly or inadvertently, those Clubs and their hundreds of members which can less-well than the Big Battalions afford to pay ever- increasing permit and licensing fees. That the situation, in a world of galloping inflation and rising petrol costs, has become desperate, is evident when you realise that the Motor Cycling Club, the oldest sporting Motor Club in this country, which continues to organise its classic long-distance trials dating back to 1908, had to pay more in Ministry-of-Transport Authorisation-Fees to run last year’s Land’s End Trial than the RAC did to hold the sponsored International RAC Rally — something to do with the MCC having more entrants who cover a bigger mileage. It is understandable that the Forestry Commission has to charge for the alleged wear-and-tear that the MATTERS OF MOMENT passage of fast-moving rally cars cause to its forest tracks and for spectator protection (ropes and whistles), ■ EXPLOITATION IS A DIRTY WORD! but it is not clear to us why a Government Department should charge the MCC for competitions which use “Man’s rich with little, were his judgement true; public roads, with every competitor paying his or her Nature is frugal, and her wants are few; These few normal road-licence duty.

ACES WILD ACES WILD The Story of the British Grand Prix THE STORY OF THE Peter Miller Motor racing is one of the most 10. 3. BRITISH GRAND PRIX exacting and dangerous sports in the world today. And Grand Prix racing for Formula 1 single-seater cars is the RIX GREATS toughest of them all. The ultimate ambition of every racing driver since 1950, when the com petition was first introduced, has been to be crowned as 'World Cham pion'. In this, his fourth book, author Peter Miller looks into the back ground of just one of the annual qualifying rounds-the British Grand Prix-which go to make up the elusive title. Although by no means the oldest motor race on the English sporting calendar, the British Grand Prix has become recognised as an epic and invariably dramatic event, since its inception at Silverstone, Northants, on October 2nd, 1948. Since gaining World Championship status in May, 1950 — it was in fact the very first event in the Drivers' Championships of the W orld-this race has captured the interest not only of racing enthusiasts, LOONS but also of the man in the street. It has been said that the supreme test of the courage, skill and virtuosity of a Grand Prix driver is to w in the Monaco Grand Prix through the narrow streets of Monte Carlo and the German Grand Prix at the notorious Nürburgring. Both of these gruelling circuits cer tainly stretch a driver's reflexes to the limit and the winner of these classic events is assured of his rightful place in racing history.
