  • Drinkwater of CHESHIRE, LANCASHIRE, the ISLE of MAN, &C
THE FAMILY OF Drinkwater OF CHESHIRE, LANCASHIRE, THE ISLE OF MAN, &c. Edited by C.H. DRINKWATER, M. A., AND w. G. D. FLETCHER, M. A., F. s. A. PRINTED FOR THE EDITORS BY E. DWELLY, FLEET, HANTS. 1920 REPRINTED 1927, BY HERALD PUBLISHING CO., LOGAN, UTAH. ... 111 PREFACE The Editors have for many years past collected materials to elu cidate the pedigree of the ancient family of Drinkwater of Cheshire, etc., and a considerable portion of these are now by special request printed for the benefit of members of the family. The Drinkwaters seem to have emanated originally from Cheshire, and the name is still more common there than in other countries. Many members of the family have distinguished themselves as soldiers, writers, poets, actors, dramatists, archaologists, artists, statesmen, at the Universities, and in municipal life. Three have received and one has declined the honour of knighthood. Two appear in the Dictionary of National Biography. It is hoped that the present record of the family will prove of interest and value to many of the various branches who are living to-day. Every Will of the name preserved at the Chester Probate Court has been abstracted, as well as all known Cheshire Wills at Somerset House. The Parish Register extracts are of cou;rse not exhaustive; those here given are the result partly of prolonged searches amongst the orginal' Registers and Bishop's Transcrips, and partly they are taken from various printed Registers. The volumes of the Record Society of Lan~hire and Cheshire have yielded much valuable in formation.

  • The Manor of Noseley
THE MANOR OF NOSELEY with some account of the free chapel of St. Mary BY GEORGE F. FARNHAM, F.S.A. and A. HAMILTON THOMPSON, F.S.A. I. THE MANOR. II. THE CHAPEL. III. ARCHITECTURAL DESCRIPTION OF THE CHAPEL. L—The Manor. The manorial descent of Noseley is extremely simple. At the time of the Domesday Survey Hugh de Grentemaisnil held twelve carucates of land in Noveslei, which, with many other manors, had been granted to him by the Conqueror. The record states: " There is land for eight ploughs. In demesne there.are two ploughs and three serfs; and sixteen villeins with a priest and eight bordars have six ploughs. There are twenty acres of brushwood. It was worth thirty shillings ; now it is worth sixty shillings."1 A few years before this date, apparently in 1081, Hugh had given the church of Noseley with its tithes and two virgates of land to the Abbey of Saint-Evroult, in the diocese of Seez, which was closely connected with his family.2 From Hugh de Grentemaisnil the manor came to the earls of Leicester, and was held of them and their successors, the earls and dukes of Lancaster, as of the honour of Leicester. The descent of the chief lords of the, fee until the present day is therefore that of the said honour. By the middle of the thirteenth century the tenants in demesne were the family of Martival, which already had obtained property elsewhere in Leicestershire. Their name appears in a variety of forms, Martiwas, Martinwast, Martivaux, Mortivaux, and in the Latin form de Martivallis.

  • Studies in Manorial History
STUDIES IN MANORIAL HISTORY ADA ELIZABETH LEVETT EDITED BY H. M. CAM Fellow and Lecturer of Gzrton College, Cambrzdge M. COATE Fellow and Tutor of Lady Margaret Hall, Oxford L. S. SUTHERLAND Fellow and Tutor oJSornermlle College, Oxford PREFACE First ~ublishedin England 1938 by OXFORD UNIVERSITY PRESS F the essays relating to the manors of St. Albans 0 which form the main contents of this volume, the majority represent unpublished papers which came into my hands on the death of my sister, Elizabeth Levett. In view of the fact that they then lacked the necessary final revision and completion in detail, and in the absence of any knowledge of what the author's own wishes would have been, the decision to publish them was not taken without much anxious deliberation. Details of fhe condi- tion in which the papers were left, and of the work which proved necessary to prepare them for the press, will be found in the Editors' Foreword: as to the reasons for ultimately deciding to publish, it is hoped that the book will speak for itself. As an introduction to the volume I have printed also a short Memoir contributed by Miss E. M. Jamison, and the author's own Inaugural Lecture, delivered on her appointment to a Chair of History in the University of London. Publication was made possible by the generosity of Miss H. M. Cam and Miss L. Stuart Sutherland, who have collaborated in completing and editing the essays on St. Albans. It is nobody's business to thank historians for what they do for History; but it should be recorded that this has involved for the Editors a very considerable sacrifice of time in the interests of a piece of work which was not primarily their own.
