GarikSuperstars Israelian, astrophysicist of Astronomy at the Page 1 of 24 Institute of Astrophysics of the Canary Islands Dave Eicher: Welcome to the Superstars of Astronomy podcast from Astronomy magazine. I’m Dave Eicher, editor in chief of Astronomy, and I want to thank Celestron, manufacturer of superb telescopes, for generously sponsoring this podcast series. Each month I’ll share the thoughts and research of the world’s greatest astronomers, astrophysicists, cosmologists and planetary scientists with you in these hour-long chats. I’m very excited to have a wonderful guest for our second show, Garik Israelian. Garik is a professor of astronomy at the Institute for Astrophysics on Tenerife in the Canary Islands. His research involves an array of interesting areas interwoven with spectroscopy including extrasolar planets, supernovae, and black holes. Garik is extremely well-known as the founder and director of the Starmus Festival, a unique and amazing get-together of astronomy enthusiasts including astronomers, astronaut explorers, musicians, artists, and forward-thinkers of all types. The second Starmus Festival just occurred this past fall in the Canaries, and the first took place in 2011. I had the pleasure of participating in Starmus and also working with Garik on the book of speeches from the first conference, and so it’s a real pleasure to welcome you, Garik, for the next hour. Thank you so much for joining me. Garik Israelian: Thank you Dave. Thanks. Dave Eicher: And you’re a guy who’s working on a lot of things these days — and we’ll get into some of them — but you’re very, very busy with projects, always on the go, and it amazes me your energy and your involvement in this, that, and everything.

English artist and UNESCO ambassador Sarah Brightman and Liverpool progressive rock band Anathema will both play at the third edition of the festival, which will pay tribute to Prof. Stephen Hawking. Starmus Festival is an event where adults and children alike can discover the wonders of the Cosmos through science, art and music. Themed Beyond the Horizon – Tribute to Stephen Hawking, the 2016 event will pay tribute to the career of the legendary theoretical physicist and will also see the launch of the Stephen Hawking Medal for Science Communication, which will recognise the work of those who help promote science, through different disciplines, to the general public. Together with Sarah Brightman and Anathema, Starmus Festival III will also host performances from the Tenerife Symphony Orchestra and from German composer Hans Zimmer, who won an Oscar for his work in the film The Lion King (1995). This adds to a comprehensive programme of events, roundtables and talks from leading personalities including musician and astronomer Dr. Brian May, Russian cosmonaut Alexei Leonov (who became the first human to make a ‘space walk’ in 1965), English chemist Harry Kroto (Nobel Prize winner in Chemistry 1996) and physicist Eric Betzig (Nobel Prize winner in Chemistry 2014), amongst many others.

  • Stephen Hawking Confirmed As Headline Speaker at Tenerife's
Stephen Hawking confirmed as headline speaker at Tenerife’s Starmus Festival this September 02 June 2014 – Acclaimed British physicist Stephen Hawking will join Nobel Prize winners, astronomers, astronauts and cosmonauts for the second edition of the Starmus Festival, to be held in Tenerife from 22nd to 27th September 2014. The Starmus Festival is open to anybody with a passion for astronomy and science and celebrates the wonder of the cosmos and the scientific progress being made to understand physics and the stars. Hawking, considered one of the greatest theoretical physicists since Albert Einstein, will give a keynote presentation on the festival’s theme, “Beginnings: the making of the modern cosmos.” His work on the origins and structure of the universe, from the Big Bang to black holes, revolutionised the field, whilst his multimillion best-selling books ‘A Brief History of Time’ (1988), ‘The Universe in a Nutshell’ (2001) and ‘The Grand Design’ (2010) helped popularise science and make it accessible to everyone. Hawking, who has twelve honorary degrees, will be accompanied by prominent figures such as Nobel Prize winners Robert W. Wilson and Sir Harold W. Kroto; British ethologist, zoologist and scientist Richard Dawkins; astrophysicist and guitarist for British rock band ‘Queen’, Brian May; and Russian cosmonaut Alexei Leonov, who became the first human to make a ‘space walk’ back in 1965. New to the line-up of speakers to join Hawking are American astronomer Jill Tarter; astrophysicists Bernard Oliver and Robert Williams; and three Apollo moonwalkers: Edgar Mitchell, Charlie Duke and Jack Schmitt. The programme includes roundtable discussions and lectures from the aforementioned figures; “astrophotography” classes to learn how to create deep-sky wide-field images; a unique concert with legendary keyboard player Rick Wakeman together with Brian May; and a stargazing “Teide Star Party” at the lunar-like landscaped Teide National Park (a UNESCO World Heritage Site).

One Small Step ISLE OF MAN POST OFFICE CELEBRATES 50TH ANNIVERSARY OF FIRST MOON LANDING WITH A UNIQUE SET OF COMMEMORATIVE STAMPS. THE ISSUE TEXT PT1 The Isle of Man Post Office presents this landmark issue in the 50th anniversary year of the first manned flight to land on the Moon. In 1957 the USSR startled the world by launching a manmade satellite, Sputnik, starting the Great Space Race. In 1958 President Eisenhower and the Congress established the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), to further America’s exploration of space. NASA soon announced the Mercury Program with the intent to send a human into space. On May 5, 1961, four months after John F. Kennedy became president, Alan Shephard became the first American in space, however this was three weeks after cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin became the first human to orbit the Earth. Kennedy needed to be bold and in a speech to Congress stated “I believe that this nation should commit itself to achieving the goal, before this decade is out, of landing a man on the Moon and returning him safely to Earth.” The Apollo Program was born and the “Great Adventure” began. In January 1967, tragedy struck the Apollo Program when three astronauts, Grissom, White and Chafee died during a count- down test. The next manned flight, Apollo 7 was a great success; Apollo 8 took a live TV camera into space and as the astronauts orbited the Moon on Christmas Eve 1968, the world saw a close-up view of the Moon as the three astronauts read from the Bible.

  • STARMUS Festival to Come to Bern, for the 50 Year Anniversary of the Moon Landing, in 2019
Corporate Communication Press release, 1 February 2018 Embargoed until 1 February 2018, 13.30 CET STARMUS Festival to come to Bern, for the 50 year anniversary of the moon landing, in 2019 In summer 2019, the first moon landing will celebrate its 50th anniversary. The successful Apollo 11 mission is closely linked with the University of Bern. Due to this anniversary, the renowned STARMUS Festival will take place in Bern from 24 to 29 June 2019. It is a festival which brings together science – primarily astronomy and space exploration – , music and art, and wants to bring research to a wider audience, and make it tangible. On 16 July 1969, the Apollo 11 Mission started its successful flight to the moon. As an important and the only non-American experiment, the Solar Wind Composition Experiment (SWC) was on board, which was primarily planned and evaluated at the Physical Institute of the University of Bern by Prof. Dr. Johannes Geiss. This solar wind sail was rolled out on the moon even before the American flag. Due to this close link with the moon landing, Garik Israelian, Director of STARMUS, approached the University of Bern with the idea of hosting the fifth edition of the international festival in Bern. Those responsible for STARMUS are announcing this today at a press conference in London, in the presence of the University of Bern and Bern Welcome. Make science tangible The STARMUS Festival has been held every two years since 2009, and has the aim of making science and research tangible to a wider audience, especially in the area of astronomy and space exploration, but also in related disciplines such as particle physics.
