Pres. RJ Ermita

Happy Rotary Thursday!

May we express our gratitude to all you fine gentlemen of our club for the quick response to the call for the 100 % Sustaining TRF Giving club this year as we celebrate our 50th anniversary. The likelihood of our attaining Most Outstanding Club in the district is very much possible. May I quote HOF Peter Javier when he said, ―We’re always doing good for others. Let’s do good for our club this time.‖ What ever the result, RC Pasig has really made its mark to the district and RI this year! Congrats!

With our very strong community service orientation, our call for pledges to our Community Food drive to benefit the Ilugin and Caliwag residents, was very much supported. In such a short period of time, we were able to raise more than P140k worth of pledges from our membership. This will give us a chance to make weekly food runs in the next 2 weeks.

Thank you gentlemen!

Today we will hear from 2 new Rotarians for their classification talks. Welcome to Rotarians Roy Quejada and Roehl Fontanilla.

On our 50th year, we remain..

Yours in Rotary,

RJ H. Ermita

This is the last month to review our targets for this Rotary year. Obviously, the target for the 100% Sustaining Club will be met. The next is the 100 members. The present Pangkat members show we are short of 7. Make it 8 as PVP Louie Orosa is obviously out for good. If all the past presidents will sponsor one each, we are done. But, this is the last call.

A time to be conscious about the extent of this Covid-19 and how fast it takes the life of a victim is now and we should start to worry as a club. Rtn Dennis survived. Well and good as he can give pointers. The brother-in-law of PP Peping's spouse Bella who lost a brother, a sister and a niece due to Covid-19 10 months earlier, succumbed also to it. Remember during the first week of March PDG Tony Rufino of our neighboring district got it on a Saturday and his son brought him to St. Luke's in Global City only to die even being admitted to the hospital. Like the bayaw of Bella, Doming Cepeda, PDG Tony lost a sister in January and a brother last December. The daughter of PP Bert contracted it in her office but lucky for her, her brother is a good doctor at St. Luke's and home care was done efficiently.

The vaccines are slowly coming in and schedules are being met but precaution and caution are needed.

Two weeks ago, the latin terms in PP Peter's Tidbits were easy to use and understand. But last medical terms are sickening to understand. If you memorize it, you will get sick. Incidentally, the community songs of our Tinig are very entertaining and is good even outside of Rotary meetings.

Last December, the sister-in-law of PDG Tony, Nenette and spouse of PP Vic of RC Makati also passed away. At this stage, we will have a notice practically every month, Covid or otherwise. Speaking of the target of 100 members, can a drive to ask for our PPs be made? PP Conrad will ask if a co-villager of his I can tap? If a target is set, why not? Getting a PP to rejoin is easier as there will be no orientation and the three meetings to attend. Last meeting, it was well organized as the questions were gathered ahead to facilitate the forum with our graceful guest speaker, Dr, Maria Tarcela Gler, infectious disease consultant of Makati Medical Center. She was a classmate of our very own Rtn Doc Ato in medical school. Speaking of doctors, we , we have lost so many doctors than any other classification. Eleven of them already with five past presidents and PP Mike Ampil becoming a district governor pa. PP Bing Basilio and PP Johnny Fuentes served as presidents in our club while PP Emil Herrera was a PP in Ozamiz and PP Ben Pastoral in RC Forbes Park. PP Val Chua should come back while PP Al Po is not as willing yet. First Hall of Famer PP Rhett can do the pressuring on him. Now it is easier to join, panay zoom meeting na lang. You can be zooming elsewhere and still be present. You can still zoom while your spouse zoom-daing. On the lighter side of life, please observe the haircuts and hairstyles of Pres Duterte and his spokesman, Harry Roque. Parehong style with the President with his own hair and Roque's somebody else's. Very light style.

PRESIDENTIAL MESSAGE

Holger Knaack President 2020-21 May 2021

For years, Susanne and I hosted many Rotary Youth Exchange students in our home. This program was an entry point to Rotary for me, and my heart is truly in it. When Rotary’s exchange programs were suspended because of COVID-19 to keep students and families safe, we felt sorry, especially for the participants, because those years cannot be repeated.

Because of the many uncertainties of the pandemic, the Rotary Board has decided to suspend in-person exchanges through June 2022. As we look ahead with hope, we thank Youth Exchange officers, host families, and volunteers for their contributions in years past, and we encourage districts to offer virtual exchanges as a way of connecting students around the world with each other and with our communities.

For those who are not able to participate in Rotary Youth Exchange, Rotary offers other opportunities. New Generations Service Exchange (NGSE) is a Rotary program that deserves wider recognition: It is an excellent opportunity for young people ages 18 to 30 to participate in community service as individuals or in a group and to gain internship experience. Simukai Matshalaga, a Rotaractor from Zimbabwe, stayed with us in Ratzeburg during her NGSE experience three years ago.

Continuation 1.

When I applied for the New Generations Service Exchange program, I did not realize that I was signing up for a life-changing experience. This program gave me that opportunity and much more. It taught me about the importance of failing fast, learning quicker, and being myself.

Some of my greatest experiences happened at the dinner table. The warmth and kindness of every home I lived in still resonate with me today. It took me weeks to understand how a stranger could care for me as deeply as these members of the Rotary family did. I am inspired by the lessons of humility I learned from all the amazing people I met. I came to understand a new culture and realized that the only things that separate us as people are our experiences and, at times, our false assumptions.

Professionally, it gave me confidence in my own abilities as an engineer. Seeing how other organizations handled problems made me aware that the best person to solve the challenges in my country was me. Returning home from northern Germany, I declined a promotion, quit my job, and began building a family business — a decision that previously I would have never made, out of fear.

I am indebted to the Rotary family. I am not sure whether the friends, mentors, and families I left behind knew that they changed my life permanently. I hope they now do.

New Generations Service Exchange changed Simukai’s life. It can change yours, too. All Rotary members can experience something similar at any time: I encourage everyone to take a virtual journey this month and visit meetings of other clubs online. You will see

ROTARY CLUB OF PASIG Tinig Newsletter May 6, 2021

PP Jun C. Zafra Continuation 2. how different Rotary is around the world as you meet great people and make new friends. Let us build upon these connections forged online — and later, when the time is right, enjoy in-person exchanges through Rotary Friendship Exchange, another excellent program for Rotary members of all ages. Our ability to meet in person is limited now, but we know that Rotary Opens Opportunities, always. Now is the time to get ready, so that when the pandemic is behind us, Rotary’s exchange programs will come back stronger than before, serving a world that is yearning to reconnect.

MORE MEDICAL TERMS THAT WILL IMPRESS YOUR DOCTOR

Onychocryptosis If you think having an ingrown toenail is painful enough, then wait until you have to explain to your doctor that you've got onychocryptosis.

Synchronous Diaphragmatic Flutter This medical term refers to involuntary twitching in the diaphragm. You probably just call these twitches hiccups instead.

Cardialgia There are certain foods which can cause people to experience cardialgia, which is far more commonly known as heartburn.

Emesis Most kinds of food poisoning or stomach bugs will be accompanied by a nasty wave of emesis, which means nausea.

Gustatory Rhinitis It eating spicy food makes your nose runny, then you're experiencing gustatory rhinitis.

Velsalgia If you've been out all night enjoying one drink after another, then you're probably going to wake up with a bad case of velsalgia the next day, more commonly known as a hangover.

Vasovagal Syncope For some people, the mere sight of blood is enough for them to experience a vasovagal syncope, meaning that they have fainted.

Odontalgia If you're experiencing odontalgia, you'd better see a dentist as soon as possible. This is because odontalgia literally means toothache.

Otalgia Many people find that changes in an airplane's cabin pressure can cause otalgia, more commonly known as an earache.

Pyrexia Pyrexia is an unfortunate part of many different medical conditions. You probably refer to it a a fever, though.

Hyperhidrosis People who suffer from hyperhidrosis can break out in a sweat at any time, whether they're working out at the gym or even on a cold winter's night while sitting outdoors.

Crepitus If you ever hear a popping and cracking sound coming from your joints, then know that that sound is called crepitus.

Diplopia If you drink enough liquor, you'll probably start seeing two of everything. This is known in the medical community as diplopia, and is a sign that you should probably put down the bottle!
