California Chrome’s Daunting Shadow, a Distaff for the Ages and The Presence of Tepin Make for a Tantalizing 33rd Breeders’ Cup

Pre-Entered fields to be announced on Wednesday, October 26

With all but one of the 81 Breeders’ Cup Challenge races completed, as part of a series that started in January in Cape Town, South Africa and ends Wednesday in Lexington, Kentucky, the book of contenders that is 33rd Breeders’ Cup is all but complete. Within its pages contain a bevy of racing superstars, including stalwarts CALIFORNIA CHROME, BEHOLDER, SONGBIRD and TEPIN, all who are sure to make racing’s championship weekend November 4-5 in Arcadia, California one of the most anticipated in the event’s rich and storied history.

Any discussion of this year’s 1 ¼-mile Breeders’ Cup Classic and Horse of the Year clearly begins with California Chrome, who has, somewhat amazingly for a horse who won the and Preakness at 3, blossomed as a 5-year-old for trainer Art Sherman. The son of Lucky Pulpit is undefeated in six starts and seemingly better than ever, as evidenced by his two most recent “Win and You’re In” grade I wins in the TVG Pacific Classic (G1) at Del Mar in August and Awesome Again (G1) at Santa Anita October 1, which both garnered him an automatic starting berth into this year’s Classic. California Chrome, who is owned in partnership by Perry Martin and Taylor Made Farm, is 15-for-24 lifetime in a Hall of Fame career, with a North American earnings record of $13.4 million, and will likely be odds-on to better his third-place finish in the 2014 Classic at Santa Anita.

Godolphin’s rates as the East Coast’s leading Classic contender, as he earned a berth into the race with his win in Saratoga’s “Win and You’re In” Whitney (GI) in August for trainer Kiaran McLaughlin. The 4-year-old son of Tapit also earned a berth into the Las Vegas Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile with his win in Belmont Park’s “Win and You’re In” (GI) in June but is more likely to run in the Classic. Frosted is 6-for-18 lifetime and will need to rebound from a surprising odds-on loss in Saratoga’s Woodward (GI) September 3 to have a chance at posting the upset.

Together, California Chrome and Frosted won three of the eight automatic qualifiers for the Classic, and they’ll meet Tarabilla Farm’s MELATONIN, who earned a berth into the race with his “Win and You’re In” Gold Cup at Santa Anita (GI) in his last start, which came June 25 in the Gold Cup at Santa Anita (GI). The speedy 5-year-old son of Kodiak Kowboy battled foot issues after the race but has been training great for David Hofmans and is 5-for-13 lifetime, which includes a win in the track and distance Santa Anita Handicap (GI) in March.

Mike Pegram, Karl Watson and Paul Weitman’s HOPPERTUNITY earned the last Classic berth with his win in Saturday’s “Win and You’re In” Club Gold Cup (GI, see race recap below) at Belmont. The 5-year-old son of Any Given Saturday has finished behind California Chrome three times this year, including a third in the World Cup, but has run well at the 1 ¼ miles and could add to a 6-for-22 lifetime record that has seen him earn over $3.5 million.

Joseph Sutton’s BRADESTER, who won the “Win and You’re In” Stephen Foster (GI) at Churchill Downs in June for trainer Eddie Kenneally, is more likely for the Dirt Mile, while Big Chief Racing and Head of Plains Partners’ EXAGGERATOR, who won the “Win and You’re In” Haskell Invitational (GI) at Monmouth Park in July for trainer Keith Desormeaux, has been taken been retired.

Tri-Bone Stable’s homebred Effinex, who was second in last year’s Classic at Keeneland and was second to Hoppertunity in the Gold Cup, is also expected for trainer Jimmy Jerkens, as is his stablemate, Stronach Stable’s homebred SHAMAN GHOST, who upset Frosted in the Woodward, while Kaleem Shah’s DORTMUND, who has been second or third to California Chrome in his last three starts for Baffert and most recently was second in the Awesome Again, could also try the favorite one more time in the Classic, or possibly reroute to the Dirt Mile.

The 3-year-olds have proven to be a mixed bag and have taken turns beating each other all year, but the group could have a potential superstar in Juddmonte Farms’ ARROGATE, who set a Saratoga track record when he won the Travers (GI) by 13 ½ lengths, while getting the 1 ¼ miles in 1:59.36 August 27 for Baffert. The son of 1995 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile winner Unbridled’s Song made his stakes debut in the Travers and simply ran the field off their feet to move his lifetime record to 4-for-5. Whether Arrogate can back up that performance remains to be seen, but his brilliant early speed could pose a direct hindrance to California Chrome.

Reddam Stable’s NYQUIST, who won the Kentucky Derby but has struggled since for trainer Doug O’Neill, is still under consideration for the Breeders’ Cup Classic, as is Winchell Racing’s fellow 3-year-old GUN RUNNER, who was third in the Derby and most recently second in Park Racing’s (GII) September 24 for trainer Steve Asmussen, though both are more likely to run in the Dirt Mile, should they show up at Santa Anita.

Longines Distaff Could be Best Ever

How good is this year’s Longines Breeders’ Cup Distaff, you ask? Consider that SONGBIRD, the undefeated reigning 14 Hands Winery Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies winner and 2-year-old filly champion, could be no better than third choice on the morning line. That’s because stalwarts STELLAR WIND and BEHOLDER, champions in their own right, could dominate the betting when they renew their budding rivalry in the 1 1/8-mile Distaff.

Hronis Racing’s Stellar Wind has forged to the division lead in her last two starts for trainer John Sadler, as she’s beaten Beholder in both “Win and You’re In” races; Del Mar’s Clement L. Hirsch (GI) in August and Santa Anita’s Zenyatta (GI) October 1. Both wins earned her an automatic starting berth into the Distaff, a race the 4-year-old daughter of 2007 Breeders’ Cup Classic winner Curlin finished second in last year at Keeneland. Stellar Wind, who was voted champion 3-year-old filly last year, is 7-for-11 lifetime and would earn another championship with a Distaff win.

Spendthrift Farm’s Beholder may enter with a three-race losing streak, but she hasn’t ducked a challenge this year for trainer Richard Mandella, as she’s sandwiched her second-place runs to Stellar Wind with a second to California Chrome in the “Win and You’re In” TVG Pacific Classic (GI) at Del Mar in August. The 6-year-old daughter of Henny Hughes won the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies at Santa Anita in 2012 and the Distaff there the next year to cap off a pair of championship campaigns, and she won another divisional title last year in a surefire Hall of Fame career that has seen her win 17-of-25 career starts.

Stonestreet Stable’s CAVORTING has answered every question trainer Kiaran McLaughlin has asked of her this year. The 4-year-old daughter of Bernardini was thought to be a one-turn sprint specialist early in her career, which included a fourth-place finish as the favorite in last year’s Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Sprint at Santa Anita, but has taken her game to new heights this year. Cavorting earned a pair of Distaff berths in her last two starts, Belmont Park’s “Win and You’re In” Ogden Phipps (GI) in June, and Saratoga’s “Win and You’re In” Personal Ensign (GI) August 27, but really garnered attention in the latter, as it was her first two-turn attempt and came at 1 1/8 miles too. Cavorting is 8-for-13 lifetime and would also likely win a championship with a Distaff win.

Fox Hill Farm’s Songbird has proven nothing short of extraordinary in her career for trainer Jerry Hollendorfer, as she’s not only undefeated in 11 starts, but has won them by a combined 60 ½ lengths. The 3-year-old daughter of Medaglia d’Oro will tackle older fillies and mares for the first time in the Distaff, but her stunning performances this year, including a trio of recent lopsided grade I wins in Saratoga’s Coaching Club American Oaks in July and Alabama in August and Park Racing’s Cotillion September 24, say she should have no problem bridging the gap. Songbird streaked to her championship last year when she easily won the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies at Keeneland and is odds-on to cement the 3-year-old filly title, regardless of the Distaff outcome.

Grayson Farm’s I’M A CHATTERBOX earned a berth into the Distaff with her win in Sunday “Win and You’re In” Juddmonte Spinster (GI, see race recap below) for trainer Larry Jones. The 4-year-old daughter of Munnings has been a consistent stakes performer all year, which includes a win in the Delaware Handicap (GI) at Delaware Park in July, and is 8-for-16 lifetime. Klaravich Stable and Bill Lawrence’s PAID UP SUBSCRIBER was a distant second in the Spinster but earned a berth into the Distaff with her win in Churchill Downs’ “Win and You’re In” Fleur de Lis (GII) in June for trainer Al Stall, though the 4-year-old daughter of Candy Ride (ARG) has not yet committed to the race.

FOREVER UNBRIDLED, who won Belmont’s Beldame (GI) October 1 for trainer Dallas Stewart and was second in Phipps and third in the Personal Ensign, and CURALINA, who won Churchill’s La Troienne (GI) in May and was second in the Personal Ensign for trainer Todd Pletcher, are also pointing to the Breeders’ Cup Distaff, as if South American filly CORONA DEL INCA, who won the Gran Premio Criadores (G1) at Palermo in Argentina on May 1.

Tepin’s Surprising Loss Makes Mile Much More Intriguing

Robert Masterson’s TEPIN, long perceived as an odds-on proposition to defend her title in the Breeders’ Cup Mile, may have an aura of vulnerability now after suffering a shocking loss when second in Saturday’s First Lady (GI, see stakes recap below) at Keeneland for trainer Mark Casse. The 5-year-old daughter of Bernstein saw her eight-race winning streak end, but still rates as a heavy Mile favorite off wins in Royal Ascot’s historic Queen Anne (GI) in June in the United Kingdom and the “Win and You’re In” Ricoh Woodbine Mile (GI) to earn a Mile berth in September. Tepin is 13-for-22 lifetime in a Hall of Fame career, but, in her last two starts after the Royal Ascot run, has not shown the brilliance she displayed early in the season, which could leave several would-be usurpers to her throne at Santa Anita.

Tepin’s biggest challenge could come from The Club Racing, Allen Rosenblum and Sagamore Farm’s MISS TEMPLE CITY, who has dodged the defending champion all year and won a pair of grade I’s against males because of it for trainer Graham Motion. The 4-year-old daughter of Temple City is 5-for-14 lifetime and will enter off a win in Saturday’s “Win and You’re In” Shadwell Turf Mile (GI, see race recap below) at Keeneland, which earned her an automatic berth into the race. Miss Temple City also won Keeneland’s Maker’s 46 Mile (GI) in April in her only other start against males.

The West Coast contingent will be led by Venneri Racing and Little Red Feather Racing’s MIDNIGHT STORM, who earned an automatic berth into the Mile with his win in the “Win and You’re In” Shoemaker Mile (GI) in June for trainer Phil D’Amato. The 5-year-old son of Pioneerof the Nile has won three straight, including the Del Mar Mile (GII) August 21, and is 8-for-18 lifetime.

IRONICUS, who flew home to be second in the Shadwell for trainer Shug McGaughey and rates a long look, as that was his first start since running second to Flintshire (GB) in the “Win and You’re In” Manhattan (GI) at Belmont June 11; TOURIST, who was third in the Shadwell, also figures to come back for trainer Bill Mott, and his win in Saratoga’s Fourstardave (GI) in August stamps his as a major contender and VYJACK, who set a course record winning Saturday’s City of Hope (GII, see race recap below) at Santa Anita for D’Amato, also rate as major Breeders’ Cup Mile contenders.

The European contingent is still up in the air but Geoff and Sandra Turnbull’s Mondialiste (IRE) figures a leading contender for trainer David O’Meara. The 6-year-old son of (IRE) is 6-for-22 lifetime and was a close fourth in the Shadwell. Mondialiste, who was second in last year’s Mile, earned an automatic starting berth into this year’s Longines Breeders’ Cup Turf with his win in the “Win and You’re In” Arlington Million (GI) in August, but is more likely to stick to a mile, as opposed to stretch out to 1 ½ miles.

Coolmore’s star 3-year-old filly ALICE SPRINGS (IRE) would warrant heavy consideration should she make the trip from Europe for trainer Aidan O’Brien. The 3-year-old daughter of Galileo (IRE) won the Sun Chariot (GI) at Newmarket October 1 and earned an automatic starting berth into the Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Turf with her win in the “Win and You’re In” Fastnet Rock Matron (GI) at Leopardstown September 10, but is more likely for the Mile. Alice Springs is 5-for-15 lifetime and already showed she can compete on American turf, as she was second in the Breeder’s Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf at Keeneland last year.

Flintshire, Clash Looming in Turf

A mouth-watering confrontation between Juddmonte Farm’s homebred and divisional leader FLINTSHIRE (GB) and Coolmore’s defending Longines Breeders’ Cup Turf winner FOUND (IRE) is sure to make this year’s 1 ½-mile Turf a race to remember, as both horses have had sterling careers and appear destined to tower over the rest of the prospective field.

Flintshire will need to rebound from a rare loss, when he was defeated as much by the yielding turf as by ECTOT (GB) in Belmont Park’s “Win and You’re In” Joe Hirsch Turf Classic (GI) October 1 for trainer Chad Brown. The 6-year-old old son of Dansili (GB) failed to secure a Turf berth in the Hirsch, but had one already off his win in Saratoga’s “Win and You’re In” Sword Dancer (GI) in August, and also won Belmont’s Manhattan (GI) in June and Saratoga’s Bowling Green (GII) in July. Flintshire, who was second in the Turf at Santa Anita in 2014 when trained by Andre Fabre, has won 8-of-23 career starts in a globe- trotting career that has seen him earn over $8.9 million.

Found added to her legend in her last start for trainer Aidan O’Brien when she won the historic Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe (GI) October 2 at Chantilly. The 4-year-old daughter of Galileo (IRE) upset last year’s Turf at Keeneland and snapped a streak of five straight second-place finish in European group I’s when she won the Arc. Found, who is scheduled to run in Saturday’s (GI) at Ascot, is 6-for- 19 lifetime and is following the same schedule as last year, when she went Arc-Champion Stakes-Turf.

Al Shaqab Racing and Normand Augustin’s Ectot was the main beneficiary of the yielding ground in the Joe Hirsch, when he led every step of the way to secure a Turf bid for trainer Todd Pletcher. The 5-year- old son of Hurricane Run (IRE) was a group I winner in Europe in 2013 for trainer Elle Lellouche but went off form and was sent to Pletcher. Ectot has won half of his 14 career starts, with the Joe Hirsch his one win from three starts in North America, and will have to prove he’s just as sharp on the expected firm ground at Santa Anita.

Coolmore and O’Brien could also send HIGHLAND REEL (IRE), who secured a berth in the Turf with his win in Ascot’s “Win and You’re In” King George VI & Queen Elizabeth (GI) in June. The 4-year-old son of Galileo (IRE) was second to his stablemate in the Arc and seems to be rounding back into form after a seventh place finish in another “Win and You’re In” for the Turf, the QIPCO Irish Champion (GI) at Leopardstown in September. Highland Reel is 6-for-18 lifetime and would rate a major contender if he can improve on his Arc run.

ASHLEYLUVSSUGAR, who won the local John Henry Turf Championship (GII) October 2 for trainer Peter Eurton is the best of the home team, while TWILIGHT ECLIPSE, who was sixth and third, respectively, in the Turf in 2013 and 2014 at Santa Anita and eighth in the race last year, could also start in the Longines Breeders’ Cup Turf or trainer Tom Albertrani.

Juveniles to Sort Themselves out at Santa Anita

Though both the race for 2-year-old champion and 2-year-old filly champion is still wide open, the past two weekends went a long way in sorting out the contenders for the Sentient Jet Breeders’ Cup Juvenile and 14 Hands Winery Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies, respectively, and both 1 1/16-mile races are figure to draw large fields.

The Juvenile’s East Coast contenders will be led by Klaravich Stable and Bill Lawrence’s PRACTICAL JOKE, who remained undefeated in three starts and earned a berth into the race with a win in Saturday’s “Win and You’re In” Champagne (GI, see race recap below) and John Oxley’s CLASSIC EMPIRE, who secured a berth with his win in Saturday’s “Win and You’re In” Claiborne Breeders’ Futurity (GI, see race recap below) at Keeneland. The former, a 2-year-old son of Flatter, also won Saratoga’s Hopeful (GI) in September for trainer Chad Brown, while the latter, a son of Pioneerof the Nile, won Churchill Downs’ Bashford Manor (GIII) in July for trainer Mark Casse.

The West Coast group will be led by Ann and Jerry Moss’ GORMLEY, who earned a berth into the Juvenile with his win in Santa Anita’s “Win and You’re In” FrontRunner (GI) October 1 for trainer John Shirreffs. The 2-year-old son of Malibu Moon stepped up off his debut win at Del Mar in September and beat Kaleen Shah’s heavy favorite KLIMT, who entered as the divisional leader for trainer Bob Baffert off wins in Del Mar’s Best Pal (GII) in August and Futurity (GI) in September. The son of Quality Road should improve off his first two-turn start in the FrontRunner and has every right to be a major contender.

Albaugh Family Stable’s homebred NOT THIS TIME looked awesome earning an automatic starting berth into the Juvenile with his win in Churchill Downs’ “Win and You’re In” Iroquois (GIII) September 17 for trainer Dale Romans. The son of Giant’s Causeway won off by 8 ¾ lengths, which doubled up on his 10- length maiden win at Ellis Park in August.

SYNDERGAARD, who was second in the Champagne, beaten just a nose after dueling through intense early fractions for trainer Todd Pletcher, is expected to head to Santa Anita for the Sentient Jet Breeders’ Cup Juvenile, as could Breeders’ Futurity runner-up LOOKIN AT LEE for trainer Steve Asmussen.

The Juvenile Fillies may not have the star power of the Juvenile, but in turn the race may draw an overflow field of 14, all who are looking to secure a championship in a wide open division. Baffert could have the favorite in Speedway Stable’s NOTED AND QUOTED, if for no other reason than she starts for the home team and earned an automatic starting berth into the race with her win in the track and distance “Win and You’re In” Chandelier (GI) October 1. The daughter of The Factor is 2-for-4 lifetime, but clearly relished getting two turns for the first time in the Chandelier.

This past weekend saw Chadds Ford Stable’s DANCING RAGS and China Horse Clubs YELLOW AGATE earn a berth into the Juvenile Fillies with wins in Friday’s “Win and You’re In” Darley Alcibiades (GI) at Keeneland and Saturday’s “Win and You’re In” Frizette (GI) at Belmont, respectively. The former, a daughter of Union Rags, went from maiden winner to grade I winner for trainer Graham Motion, which is the same path the latter, a daughter of Gemologist, took for trainer Christophe Clement. Normandy Farm’s homebred DADDYS LIL DARLING, who earned a berth into the Juvenile Fillies with her win in Churchill’s “Win and You’re In” Pocahontas (GII) in September for trainer Kenny McPeek, impressed when a wide second in the Alcibiades, and the daughter of Scat Daddy looms as one of major contenders for the 14 Hands Winery Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies.

Lady Eli Highlights the Rest of the Cup Contenders

The stars are sure to be out at Santa Anita for the remainder of the seven Breeders’ Cup races, though Sheep Pond Partner’s will be the overwhelming feel-good story of the weekend, as she’s battled back from a severe case of laminitis that almost cost her her life, to be in position to win a championship should she win the 1 ¼- miles Filly & Mare Turf. The 4-year-old daughter of Divine Park secured a berth into the race with her win in Saturday’s “Win and You’re In” Flower Bowl (GI, see race recap below) at Belmont Park and figures to be a strong favorite off not only her incredible comeback story, but her 7-for-8 lifetime record for trainer Chad Brown.

The Filly & Mare Turf could also lure AVENGE, who won the local prep and earned a berth into the race with her win in the “Win and You’re In” Rodeo Drive (GI) October 1 for trainer Richard Mandella, as well as SENTIERO ITALIA and SEA CALISI (FR), who ran 2-3 in the Flower Bowl for trainers Kiaran McLaughlin and Brown, respectively. The latter already secured a berth in the race with her win in Arlington Park’s “Win and You’re In” Beverly D. (GI) in August. CATCH A GLIMPSE, who won last year’s Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf for trainer Mark Casse and earned a berth into the race with her win in the Belmont Oaks (GI) in July, could also run in the Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Turf, as could graded stakes winner DACITA (CHI) and TIME AND MOTION. South African filly SMART CALL, winner of the Main Chance Farms Paddock Stakes (G1) in South Africa back in January is another potential intriguing starter.

The six-furlong TwinSpires Breeders’ Cup Sprint is expected to attract an all-star field, with several heavyweights going for a championship. Spendthrift Farm’s LORD NELSON earned his second berth into the race with his win in Saturday’s “Win and You’re In” Santa Anita Sprint Championship (GI, see race recap below) for trainer Bob Baffert, while Green Lantern Stable’s homebred A.P. INDIAN did the same with his win in Friday’s “Win and You’re In” Stoll Keenon Ogden Phoenix (GII, see race recap below) at Keeneland for trainer Arnaud Delacour. Jay Em Ess Stable’s lightly raced MASOCHISTIC figures a leading contender for trainer Ron Ellis off his win in Del Mar’s August 27 “Win and You’re In” Pat O’Brien, which netted him a berth into the Las Vegas Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile, though he’ll stick in the Sprint, as does owner-trainer Charlton Baker’s JOKING, who earned a berth into the race with his “Win and You’re In” score in Belmont’s Vosburgh (GI) October 1, while Charles Chu’s DREFONG impressed wiring the King’s Bishop (GI) August 27 for Baffert and could prove the one to catch in the TwinSpires Breeders’ Cup Sprint.

The seven-furlong Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Sprint figures to lure a deep and competitive field, with older graded stakes winners HAVEYOUGONEAWAY and IRISH JASPER, who earned automatic berths into the race off wins in the “Win and You’re In” Ballerina (GI) at Saratoga August 27 for trainer Tom Morley and Saturday’s “Win and You’re In” Club of America (GII, see race recap below) for trainer Chad Brown, respectively, taking on classy 3-year-old grade I winners CARINA MIA and CATHRYN SOPHIA, while stakes winners LEWIS BAY, OFF THE TRACKS, LUCY N ETHEL, PAULASSILVERLING, STONETASTIC and TARA’S TANGO, would add plenty of depth, as would defending champion WAVELL AVENUE, should they start.

The Las Vegas Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile, run around two turns, figures to draw a crowd, with Joseph Sutton’s BRADESTER, who earned a berth into the Breeders’ Cup Classic in Churchill Downs’ “Win and You’re In” Stephen Foster (GI) in June, expected to cut back for trainer Eddie Kenneally. Graded stakes winning 3-year-olds GUN RUNNER and TOM’S READY could also run, as could older stakes veterans ANCHOR DOWN, POINT PIPER, TAMARKIZ and UPSTART.

The six and a half furlong Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint, run down the hillside turf course, is expected to be led by Mongolian Stable’s defending champion MONGOLIAN SATURDAY, who won the race last year at Keeneland and returned to the U.S. and won Saturday’s Woodford (GIII, see race recap below) there for trainer Enebish Ganbat, though a full field of 14 is expected, and could include AMBITIOUS BREW, GREEN MASK, GUNS LOADED, HOLY LUTE, MISSISSIPPI DELTA, OBVIOUSLY (IRE), PASSION FOR ACTION, PURE SENSATION and UNDRAFTED,

The 1-mile Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf and sister race, the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf, also figure to fill up, with the both divisions still largely undefined at this point. The Juvenile Turf is expected to draw China Horse Club’s GOOD SAMARITAN, who earned an automatic berth into the race with his win in Woodbine’s “Win and You’re In” Summer (GII) September 18 for trainer Bill Mott, as well as Gary Barber’s KEEP QUIET (FR), who earned a berth with his win in Sunday’s “Win and You’re In” Dixiana Bourbon (GIII, see race recap below) for trainer Mark Casse. Stakes winners MADE YOU LOOK, OSCAR PERFORMANCE and J.S. CHOICE are also likely for the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf.

The $1 million Juvenile Fillies Turf figures to be led by Live Oak Plantation’s VICTORY TO VICTORY, who earned a berth into the race with her win in Woodbine’s “Win and You’re In” (GI) September 18 for Casse, while Reeves ’s SPAIN BERG (FR), who earned a berth into the race with her win in the “Win and You’re In” Shadwell Rockfel (GII) at Newmarket September 23 for trainer Xavier Thomas-Demeaulte, could also make the trip. Stakes winner COASTED could also see action in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf, as could BEAT THE BENCHMARK, RYMSKA (FR) STORMY PERFECTION and WITH HONORS.

Jessamine to Offer Final ‘Cup Bid

The final Breeders’ Cup Challenge race of the year takes place at Keeneland Wednesday, when the $150,000 JPMorgan Chase Jessamine (GIII) is run, with an automatic starting berth into the $1 million Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf on the line. Run at 1 1/16 miles, the Jessamine drew a full field of 14, with Claiborne Farm and Adele Dilschneider’s LULL the morning line favorite off a win in the Kentucky Downs Juvenile Fillies September 3 for trainer Christophe Clement. The 2-year-old daughter of War Front is 2-for-3 lifetime but faces a stiff test from John Oxley’s LA CORONEL, who got to the turf at Saratoga September 5 and ran off to a 4-length maiden win for trainer Mark Casse. The daughter of Colonel John is 1-for-3 lifetime, but clearly relished the turf.

Allen Peterson’s MAJESTIC GALE, who romped in the Happy Ticket at Louisiana Downs September 10 for trainer Joe Sharp also warrants respect, as do stakes-placed runners SENORA ACERO and MAJESTC BONNIE, while maiden winners, DIVINE HUMOR, LIBERALE (FR), LIPSTICK CITY, QUEEN DEL VALLE, RUM GO, SWEEPING PADDY, TAPA TAPA TAPA, WICKED LUCK and ZERO ZEE are also entered for the JPMorgan Chase Jessamine.

Countdown to the Breeders’ Cup Classic – Mike Pegram, Karl Watson and Paul Weitman’s well- traveled HOPPERTUNITY (John Velazquez) came east and bagged the biggest win of his career in Belmont Park’s $1 million “Win and You’re In” Jockey Club Gold Cup (GI) when he wore down a stubborn EFFINEX by a half-length and earned an automatic starting berth into the Breeders’ Cup Classic as a result. Bob Baffert trained the winner, a 5-year-old son of Any Given Saturday who had the misfortune of chasing California Chrome home three times this year, including most recently when fourth in another Classic “Win and You’re In” race, Del Mar’s August 20 TVG Pacific Classic (GI). Hoppertunity, who was also third to California Chrome in Santa Anita’s San Pasqual (GII) in January and Meydan’s (GI) in March, won the San Antonio (GII) at Santa Anita in February, his lone win in his last 13 starts before the Gold Cup, and is now 6-for-22 lifetime. Baffert said Sunday morning that Hoppertunity would move on the Classic. Tri-Bone Stable’s homebred Effinex lost nothing in defeat and flashed the form that enabled him to run second to in last year’s Classic at Keeneland. The 5-year-old son of Mineshaft, who is 9-for-26 lifetime, won the Oaklawn Handicap (GII) in April and the local Suburban (GII) in July for trainer Jimmy Jerkens, and has shown an affinity for the Classic distance of 1 ¼ miles. Dr. Russell Cohen, who owns Tri-Bone Stable, left little doubt where Effinex will run next. "We're in for the Breeders' Cup,” Cohen said. “There's no question about it, we're going." Countdown to the Longines Breeders’ Cup Distaff – Grayson Farm’s I’M A CHATTERBOX (Florent Geroux) overpowered PAID UP SUBSCRIBER off the far turn and scooted clear for a 7-length win in Keeneland’s $500,000 “Win and You’re In” Juddmonte Spinster (GI) and earned an automatic starting berth into the Longines Breeders’ Cup Distaff. The 4-year-old daughter of Munnings relished getting away from the division’s best, as she entered off a close fourth-place finish to Cavorting in another “Win and You’re In” for the Distaff, Saratoga’s Personal Ensign (GI) August 27 for trainer Larry Jones. I’m a Chatterbox, who posted a stakes double at Delaware Park this summer, winning the Obeah in June and Delaware Handicap (GI) in July, is now 8-for-16 lifetime and heads to Santa Anita for the biggest challenge of her career. “I think this may be the deepest Distaff that I have seen in a long time,” Jones said. “There’s seven really good horses. I’m putting her right there with them.” Video: Juddmonte Spinster

Race: $1 million Shadwell Turf Mile (GI), 3yos & up, 1-mile (turf) BREEDERS’ CUP CHALLEGE RACE Track: Keeneland Finishing Order: 1 – MISS TEMPLE CITY, 2 – IRONICUS, 3 – TOURIST Margins: Head, half, 1 Also ran: MONDIALISTE (IRE), KASAQUI (ARG), PLEUVEN (FR), RING WEEKEND, WHAT A VIEW, GRAND ARCH, TOWER OF TEXAS, TRIPLE THREAT (FR) Winning Owner: The Club Racing, Allen Rosenblum & Sagamore Farm; Trainer: Connections: Graham Motion; Jockey: Edgar Prado. Time: 1:37.04 (firm)

Countdown to the Breeders’ Cup Mile – The Club Racing, Allen Rosenblum and Sagamore Farm’s MISS TEMPLE CITY (Edgar Prado) won her second grade I of the year over males at Keeneland and earned an automatic starting berth into the Breeders' Cup Mile when she held off IRONICUS' frantic late rally by a head in the $1 million "Win and You're In" Shadwell Turf Mile. Graham Motion trained the winner, a 4-year-old daughter of Temple City who has remarkably never won a graded stake in nine tries against fillies and mares but is now 2-for-2 in grade I's over males, as she also won the local Maker's 46 Mile in April. Miss Temple City is now 5-for-14 lifetime and figures to try males again in the Mile. “I think we have to (run in the Mile),” Motion said. “As long as she’s doing well, I would imagine we will be there.” Stuart Janney's homebred Ironicus ran huge in defeat for trainer Shug McGaughey, as he had not been out since running second to Flintshire (GB) in Belmont Park's "Win and You're In" Manhattan (GI) June 11. And while the Manhattan offered an automatic starting berth into the Longines Breeders' Cup Turf, the 5-year-old son of Distorted Humor, who is 6-for-14 lifetime, will stick to a mile. “He will go back to New York Monday,” McGaughey said. “I assume he will go on to the Breeders’ Cup (Mile). That’s the plan.” WinStar Farm and Gary Barber’s TOURIST was third for trainer Bill Mott and rates a much better chance in this year’s Mile than the colt who was 13th in the race at Santa Anita in 2014 and eighth last year at Keeneland. The 5-year-old son of two-time Breeders’ Cup Classic winner Tiznow is 5-for-17 lifetime entered off a win in Saratoga’s Fourstardave (GI) August 20. Geoff and Sandra Turnbull's MONDIALISTE (IRE), who already earned an automatic starting berth into the Longines Breeders’ Cup Turf win his win in the "Win and You're In" Arlington Million (GI) August 13, was fourth for trainer David O'Meara and will run in either the Turf or Mile. The 6-year-old son of Galileo (IRE) was second in the Mile last year and is 5-for- 22 lifetime, but sports a 4-2-1-0 record in North America. “He goes to Nashville, where he gets a direct flight to Stansted (in London),” said Fergal Davis, the exercise rider for Mondialiste. “The plan is to come back for the Breeders’ Cup (at Santa Anita).” Motion also trains St Elias Stable and West Point Thoroughbreds’ RING WEEKEND, who was seventh after an extremely wide trip but could still move on to the Mile. The 5-year-old son of Tapit won the Kilroe Mile (GI) over the same course and distance as the Mile in 2015 and could look to improve on his 6-for-18 lifetime record at Santa Anita. “He didn’t have a great trip in the Shadwell,” Motion said. “He went a little wide and it was a slow pace. I wouldn’t rule out the Breeders’ Cup for him.” Video: Shadwell Turf Mile

Race: $400,000 First Lady (GI), fillies & mares, 1-mile (turf) Track: Keeneland Finishing Order: 1 – PHOTO CALL, 2 – TEPIN, 3 – CELESTINE 2 ¾, 3 ½, 3 Also ran: NEMORALIA, SHE’S NOT HERE, CASH CONTROL, ONUS, NOW OR NEVER (IRE), SECRET SOMEONE, MISSISSIPPI DELTA Winning Owner: Teresa Viola Racing Stable; Trainer: Todd Pletcher; Jockey: Kent Connections: Desormeaux. Time: 1:35.62 (firm)

Countdown to the Breeders’ Cup Mile – Teresa Viola Racing Stable’s PHOTO CALL (Kent Desormeaux) ran off to an insurmountable early lead and easily held off defending Breeders’ Cup Mile winner TEPIN for a 3-length win in Keeneland’s $400,000 First Lady (GI). The 5-year-old daughter of Galileo (IRE) had been a bit of an enigma this year for trainer Todd Pletcher, as she won the Orchid (GIII) at Gulfstream Park in February then went winless, and largely uncompetitive, in four stakes starts. Photo Call, who won Santa Anita’s “Win and You’re In” Rodeo Drive (GI) last year to secure a spot in the Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Turf, in which she finished fifth when trained by Graham Motion, was sold for $3 million at the Keeneland November Sale. She’s now 6-for-21 lifetime and could be in line for another run at the Breeders’ Cup, in either the Mile or Filly & Mare Turf. Robert Masterson’s Tepin saw her winning streak end at eight, which started in last year’s First Lady before going on to win the Mile over the course for trainer Mark Casse. The 5-year-old daughter of Bernstein was in the midst of a legendary run that peaked with a win in the historic Queen Anne (GI) at Royal Ascot in June and continued in her last start, when she secured a Mile berth win a win in the “Win and You’re In” Ricoh Woodbine Mile (GI) September 17. Tepin is now 13-for-22 lifetime, and while the loss was certainly a downer, Casse’s son and top assistant Norm, who has overseen the mare’s training for the majority of the year, is all about the big picture. “We hoped for the best, but this is why we picked this race in particular. We didn’t really want to run her ‘A’ race today,” Norm Casse said. “The goal has always been the Breeders’ Cup Mile, a repeat there. I haven’t lost any confidence in her, I think we are still set up to do that and she’ll move forward from this race. Video: First Lady

Race: $201,725 City of Hope (GII), 3yos & up, 1-mile (turf) Track: Santa Anita Finishing Order: 1 – VYJACT, 2 – OM, 3 – OBVIOUSLY (IRE) Margins: Half, half, 5 ¼ Also ran: PERFECTLY MAJESTIC, HOOTENANNY, PATRIOTS RULE, EXPRESS HIMSELF (IRE), ST. JOE BAY, ED JOHNSON, FRANK CONVERSATION Winning Owner: Pick Six Racing; Trainer: Phil D’Amato; Jockey: Flavien Prat. Connections: Time: 1:31.69 (firm)

Countdown to the Breeders’ Cup Mile – Pick Six Racing’s VYJACK (Flavien Prat) announced his presence as a legitimate contender for the Breeders’ Cup Mile when he set a new course record en route to a half-length win over OM in Santa Anita’s $201,725 City of Hope (GII). Phil D’Amato trained the winner, who scorched the mile in 1:31.69 over the same course and distance that next month’s Mile will be run. Vyjack has enjoyed a career reclamation of late, as he was a fringe contender on the Triple Crown Trail in 2013 when trained by Rudy Rodriguez, running 18th in the Kentucky Derby, then won just once in five turf starts last year for trainer Bill Mott. D’Amato took over Vyjack’s training this summer and he was second to sprint heavyweight Masochistic in Del Mar’s “Win and You’re In” Pat O’Brien (GII) August 27. Now 8-for-27 lifetime, D’Amato may have to change plans for Vyjack’s next start. “The original plan was the Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile for Vyjack but with the way he ran today, we’ll see,” D’Amato said. “The turf milers here have such tremendous turn of foot and Vyjack showed that today and it set up for him. He trains just as well on the main track here at Santa Anita too so we have a couple of options to look at and think about.” Sareen Family Trust’s OM was a sharp second for trainer Dan Hendricks and is another who has shown an affinity for the local turf, as he’s 6-3-1-1 over the course, which includes a win in the Mathis Brothers Mile (GII) in December. The 4-year-old son of Munnings is 5-for-14 lifetime and, after running second in his comeback in the Del Mar Mile (GII) August 21 after five months off, has Hendricks looking forward to next month. “He looks on schedule and ready to go,” Hendricks said. “It’s been the plan since we turned him out to come back in these two races and go for the Breeders’ Cup.” D’Amato also trains Anthony Fanticola and Joseph Sardino’s OBVIOUSLY (IRE), who was third, beaten just a length after setting torrid early splits. The 8-year-old son of Choisir (AUS) has been a Breeders’ Cup mainstay, running third in the Mile at Santa Anita in 2012, fifth in the race there the next two years and ninth in last’s year renewal at Keeneland. Obviously, who has won multiple grade I’s in a 12-for-28 career, is on schedule for a fifth Breeders’ Cup try next month, though D’Amato indicated he could cut back and run in the Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint too. “I don’t take anything away from Obviously today,” D’Amato said. “I don’t think they’ll go :21.40 and :43.97 in the Breeders’ Cup Mile so between the Mile and the Turf Sprint. I think one of those spots will be right up his alley.” Video: City of Hope Stakes

Connections: Time: 1:50.62 (yielding)

Countdown to the Breeders’ Cup Mile – Terry Hamilton’s HEART TO HEART (Irad Ortiz) led every step of the way and held off the late charge of JAY GATSBY en route to a half-length win in Belmont Park’s $200,000 Knickerbocker (GII). Brian Lynch trained the winner, a 5-year-old son of 2007 Breeders’ Cup Turf winner English Channel who had not run since finishing fourth in Santa Anita’s June 4 “Win and You’re In” Shoemaker Mile (GI), which awarded an automatic starting berth into the Breeders’ Cup Mile. Heart to Heart won three straight graded stakes over the , including Gulfstream Park’s Fort Lauderdale (GII) in January and was second in Keeneland’s Maker’s 46 Mile (GI) in April, finishing behind Miss Temple City, who won their “Win and You’re In” Shadwell Turf Mile (GI, see race recap above) Saturday to earn a berth in this year’s Mile. Heart to Heart is now 10-for-23 lifetime and could be a longshot candidate to run in the Mile. Video: Knickerbocker Stakes

Countdown to the Longines Breeders’ Cup Turf – Ken and Sarah Ramsey’s homebred CAMELOT KITTEN (Irad Ortiz) led a 1-2-3 finish across the line for trainer Chad Brown when he beat BEACH PATROL by a head, with ANNALS OF TIME back in third. The 3-year-old son of Kitten’s Joy has shown a nose for the finish line this year, as he won the American Turf (GII) at Churchill Downs in May by a head, the local Pennine Ridge (GIII) in June by a nose and Saratoga’s Hall of Fame (GII) by a nose in August. Camelot Kitten, who entered off a head defeat to sixth-place finisher INSPECTOR LYNLEY in Saratoga’s Saranac (GIII) September 3, has now won half of his 10 career starts. Brown indicated all three horses could run next in Del Mar’s Hollywood Derby (GI) December 3. Video: The Hill Prince

Race: $500,000 Flower Bowl (GI), fillies & mares, 1 ¼ miles (turf) BREEDERS’ CUP CHALLENGE RACE Track: Belmont Park Finishing Order: 1 – LADY ELI, 2 – SENTIERO ITALIA, 3 – SEA CALISI (FR) Margins: ¾, 1 ¼, 1 ¼ Also ran: STRIKE CHARMER, ITSONLYACTINGDAD, AME BLEUE (GB) Winning Owner: Sheep Pond Partners; Trainer: Chad Brown; Jockey: Irad Ortiz. Connections: Time: 1:59.85 (firm)

Countdown to the Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Turf – Sheep Pond Partners’ LADY ELI (Irad Ortiz) built on the feel-good story of the year and earned an automatic starting berth into the Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Turf with a three quarters of a length win over SENTIERO ITALIA in Belmont Park’s $500,000 “Win and You’re In” Flower Bowl (GI). The 4-year-old daughter of Divine Park, who capped an undefeated 4- for-4 2-year-old campaign with a win in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf at Santa Anita in 2014, won her first two starts of 2015 but stepped on a nail walking back to trainer Chad Brown’s barn after winning the Belmont Oaks (GI) July 4 and developed a severe case of laminitis. Lady Eli battled for her life for several weeks and didn’t return to training until this spring, then made her much anticipated comeback in Saratoga’s Ballston Spa (GII) August 27 and finished second to STRIKE CHARMER, who finished fourth in the Flower Bowl. The win moved her career mark to 7-for-8 and has Brown eagerly looking towards Santa Anita with a filly that is peaking. "It'll be her third race off the layoff, she has a mile- and-a-quarter race under her belt now,” Brown said. She has a very good chance of getting the firm turf that she loves out at Santa Anita. She has a win out there already, although they have a new turf course, but I'm sure it's similar. If anything else, she's comfortable with the environment and shipping out there, so I'm excited to bring her into the Breeders' Cup. I think she’s better than ever. It takes such a rare horse to overcome what she has and to make it all the way back to center stage at the Breeders’ Cup. I think she’s one of the all-time great turf mares, I really believe that.” Godolphin’s homebred Sentiero Italia ran well in defeat and will look to better her fourth-place finish in last year’s Filly & Mare Turf for trainer Kiaran McLaughlin. The 4-year-old daughter of Medaglia d’Oro, who was making just her third start of the year and was a close third in the Ballston Spa, is 5-for-11 lifetime and has a dangerous blend of speed and stamina that could play well over the Santa Anita turf, should she move on. "We'll see,” McLaughlin said. “The Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Turf is very possible, I'll talk to the Godolphin people." Martin Schwartz’s third-place finisher SEA CALISI (FR) struggled with the lack of pace and flattened out late, but had already earned a berth into the Filly & Mare Turf when she won Arlington Park’s “Win and You’re In” Flower Bowl (GI) August 13 for Brown. The 4-year-old daughter of Youmzain (IRE) is 5-for-11 lifetime and would be a major threat at Santa Anita if she catches a field with more early speed. “I thought the race did her well, she had a little gap there between the Beverley D. I think this race will do her real good,” Brown said. “I'm looking forward to running her back in four weeks (in the Filly & Mare Turf) rather than the lengthier spacing she just had. I think she'll move forward off of this." Video: The Flower Bowl

Connections: Time: 1:08.80 (fast)

Countdown to the TwinSpires Breeders’ Cup Sprint – Spendthrift Farm’s LORD NELSON (Flavien Prat) continued his domination of the West Coast’s sprint division with a 2 ½-length win over ALL RUN in the $300,000 “Win and You’re In” Santa Anita Sprint Championship (GI) and earned an automatic starting berth into the TwinSpires Breeders’ Cup Sprint. Bob Baffert trained the winner, a 4-year-old son of Pulpit who won his fourth straight overall and third stakes, to go with scores in the Triple Bend (GI) at Santa Anita in June and Del Mar’s July 31 “Win and You’re In” Bing Crosby (GI) to earn his first Sprint bid. Lord Nelson is now 7-for-13 lifetime and looms a major contender for the Sprint for Baffert, who, as a four-time winner of the race, knows what it takes to hoist the trophy. “The Sprint is a difficult race to win, but if you have the right kind of horse you can do it, and so far, Lord Nelson looks like the right kind of horse,” Baffert said. “He likes this track and he hasn’t lost this year.” Video: Santa Anita Sprint Championship

SMUDGE, CINCO CHARLIE Winning Owner: Green Lantern Stable; Trainer: Arnaud Delacour; Jockey: Joe Connections: Bravo. Time: 1:08.43 (fast)

Countdown to the TwinSpires Breeders’ Cup Sprint – It took a track record for Green Lantern Stable’s homebred A.P. INDIAN (Joe Bravo) to earn another automatic starting berth into the TwinSpires Breeders’ Cup Sprint, but he obliged, while moving his record to 6-for-6 this year, with a thrilling nose win over LIMOUSINE LIBERAL in Keeneland’s “Win and You’re In” $250,000 Stoll Keenon Ogden Phoenix (GII). The 6-year-old son of Indian Charlie, who got the six furlongs in 1:08.43, has vaulted to the top of his division this year for trainer Arnaud Delacour and won his fourth straight stakes, to go with the Belmont Sprint Championship (GIII) in July and Saratoga’s Vanderbilt (GI) in July and “Win and You’re In” Forego (GI) in August, which earned him his first berth into the Sprint. A.P. Indian is now 11-for-17 and will likely wait until race-week before heading to California. “I have to get with the shipping company, but we will probably wait until the last flight (to California),” Delacour said. “If he can have his last work at Fair Hill that would be perfect.” Katherine Ball’s homebred Limousine Liberal ran too good to lose while adding blinkers and would be a Sprint contender for trainer Ben Colebrook, should he make the trip to Santa Anita. The 4-year-old son of Successful Appeal has had an up-and-down season, with just one local allowance win from six starts, but clearly improved with the blinkers after running a well-beaten seventh in the Forego. Colebrook was non-committal about the Sprint for Limousine Liberal, who is 3-for-11 lifetime. Video: Stoll Keenon Ogden Phoenix Stakes

Countdown to the Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Sprint – Will Farish and David Mackie's IRISH JASPER (Julien Leparoux) closed up the rail to post a 1 ¾-length win over STONETASTIC in Keeneland's $250,000 "Win and You're In" Thoroughbred Club of America (GII) and earned an automatic starting berth into the Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Sprint. Chad Brown trained the winner, a 4-year-old daughter of First Defence who won the Miss Preakness (GIII) at Pimlico and Victory Ride (GIII) at Belmont Park in 2015 when trained by Derek Ryan. Irish Jasper came to Brown's care in the summer of 2015 and entered off a win in an optional claimer at Saratoga August 12. Race: $500,000 Claiborne Breeders’ Futurity (GI), 2yos, 1 1/16 miles BREEDERS’ CUP CHALLENGE RACE Track: Keeneland Finishing Order: 1 – CLASSIC EMPIRE, 2 – LOOKIN AT LEE, 3 – WILD SHOT Margins: 3, 1 ,head Also ran: NO DOZING, GUNNEVERA, SINGING BULLET, BITUMEN, TIZ TREVOR, BLAME WILL, PERRO ROJO, HOLIDAY BONUS, HONOR THY FATHER Winning Owner: John Oxley; Trainer: Mark Casse; Jockey: Julien Leparoux. Connections: Time: 1:43.41 (fast)

Countdown to the Sentient Jet Breeders’ Cup Juvenile – John Oxley's CLASSIC EMPIRE (Julien Leparoux) stamped himself as a major contender for the Sentient Jet Breeders' Juvenile when he earned an automatic berth into the race with an overpowering 3-length win over LOOKIN AT LEE in Keeneland's $500,000 Claiborne Breeders' Futurity (GI). The 2-year-old son of Pioneerof the Nile has won every race he's finished for trainer Mark Casse but entered off a DNF as the favorite after throwing his jockey at the start of Saratoga's Hopeful (GI) September 5. Classic Empire won his debut at Churchill Downs in May then won their Bashford Manor (GIII) in July and will head to Churchill Downs to prepare for the Juvenile, with the rest of Casse’s Breeders’ Cup contingent. L and N Racing's Lookin At Lee closed stoutly after a wide journey from the far outside post for trainer Steve Asmussen and is a candidate for the Juvenile. The son of Lookin at Lucky is 2-for-5 lifetime and gives the impression he’ll be a major Triple Crown contender when the distances stretch out next winter and spring. Race: $500,000 Champagne (GI), 2yos, 1-mile BREEDERS’ CUP CHALLENGE RACE Track: Belmont Park Finishing Order: 1 – PRACTICAL JOKE, 2 – SYNDERGAARD, 3 – FAVORABLE OUTCOME Margins: Nose, 6 ½, half Also ran: BIG GRAY ROCKET, THIRST FOR VICTORY, LOOKIN AT BLESSING Winning Owner: Klaravich Stable & Bill Lawrence; Trainer: Chad Brown; Jockey: Connections: Joel Rosario. Time: 1:34.68 (fast)

Countdown to the Sentient Jet Breeders’ Cup Juvenile – Klaravich Stable and Bill Lawrence's PRACTICAL JOKE (Joel Rosario) ran down a game SYNDERGAARD by a nose to win Belmont Park's $500,000 "Win and You're In" Champagne (GI) and earned an automatic starting berth into the Sentient Jet Breeders' Cup Juvenile as a result. Chad Brown trained the winner, a 2-year-old son of Flatter who doubled up on his win in Saratoga's Hopeful (GI) September 5 and remained undefeated in three starts. Practical Joke will go for a 2-year-old championship in the Juvenile. Eric Fein's Syndergaard ran a remarkable race in defeat, during on the lead though a half-mile in 44.63 and six furlongs in 1:08.76 yet just missing for trainer Todd Pletcher. The New York-bred son of Majesticperfection stepped out of restricted company for the first time and showed he's a major player on the national scene while suffering his first defeat in three starts. He’ll likely get a rematch with Practical Joke at Santa Anita after his brutal beat. “He was in front right before the wire and right after the wire. It's just one of those tough head bobs,” Pletcher said. “We'll take a few days and discuss it with everyone, but I think he ran well enough to keep the Breeders' Cup in mind." Race: $400,000 Darley Alcibiades (GI), 2yo fillies, 1 1/16 miles BREEDERS’ CUP CHALLENGE RACE Track: Keeneland Finishing Order: 1 – DANCING RAGS, 2 – DADDYS LIL DARLING, 3 – FUN 1, 2, ¾ Also ran: CAROLINE TEST, DREAM DANCING, FOR HONOR, BENNER ISLAND, QUEEN BERNARDINA, I’MLUCKYSGIRL, DIADURA, SULLY’S DREAM, PRICE TOO HIGH, COLD HEARTED PEARL, LADY HANSEN Winning Owner: Chadds Ford Stable; Trainer: Graham Motion; Jockey: Angel Connections: Cruz. Time: 1:44.69 (fast)

Countdown to the 14 Hands Winery Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies – Chadds Ford Stable’s DANCING RAGS (Angel Cruz) earned an automatic starting berth into the 14 Hands Winery Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies with a one-length win over DADDYS LIL DARLING in Keeneland’s $400,000 “Win and You’re In” Darley Alcibiades (GI). The 2-year-old daughter of Union Rags entered off a maiden win at Laurel Park September 17 for trainer Graham Motion, in what was her first start on dirt after running third there on the turf in August. Dancing Rags was a $210,000 purchase as a 2-year-old in training at the Ocala March Sale and could look to add to her resume at Santa Anita in the Juvenile Fillies. “I haven’t really talked to (owner) Mrs. (Phyllis) Wyeth about it yet, but obviously that is what we would like to do if Dancing Rags is doing well.” Normandy Farm’s homebred Daddys Lil Darling, who already earned a berth into the Juvenile Fillies with her win in Churchill Downs’ “Win and You’re In” Pocahontas (GII) September 17, ran huge in defeat after breaking from the far outside post and getting caught wide every step of the way for trainer Kenny McPeek. The daughter of Scat Daddy is 2-for-4 lifetime and will ship early to Santa Anita to prepare for the Juvenile Fillies, according to McPeek. Video: Darley Alcibiades

Race: $400,000 Frizette (GI), 2yo fillies, 1-mile BREEDERS’ CUP CHALLENGE RACE Track: Belmont Park Finishing Order: 1 – YELLOW AGATE, 2 – LIBBY’S TAIL, 3 – COLORFUL CHARADES Margins: Head, 9 ¼, 1 ½ Also ran: NONNA MELA, SKY GESTURE, STAR SUPER Winning Owner: China Horse Club; Trainer: Christophe Clement; Jockey: Manny Connections: Franco. Time: 1:35.82 (fast)

Countdown to the 14 Hands Winery Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies – China Horse Club's YELLOW AGATE (Manny Franco) wore down a game LIBBY'S TAIL and earned a starting berth into the 14 Hands Winery Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies with a head win in Belmont Park's $400,000 "Win and You're In" Frizette (GI). Christophe Clement trained the winner, a 2-year-old daughter of Gemologist who entered off a debut win over the track September 11 and has been a quick return on her $210,000 purchase price at the Keeneland 2015 September sale. Clement indicated Sunday morning that Yellow Agate was in fine fettle and is likely for the Juvenile Fillies. "Yellow Agate came out of her race in very good order," Clement said. "I'm happy with her this morning. I will speak with the owners and we'll make a decision by the end of the week. Of course, we'll keep the Breeders' Cup under strong consideration." Mike Dubb’s Libby’s Tail was extremely game in defeat after setting a fast and contested pace and held remarkably well for trainer Rudy Rodriguez. The daughter of Tiz Wonderful, who won her debut at Belmont in July and entered off a fourth-place finish in Saratoga’s Adirondack (GII) August 19, is also under consideration for the Juvenile Fillies. The disappointment in the Frizette was St Elias Stable's NONNA MELA, who was a distant fourth for trainer Todd Pletcher after winning the Adirondack by 6 lengths, but struggled to keep up with Libby’s Tail's hot pace. Countdown to the Las Vegas Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile – Alto Racing's ANCHOR DOWN (Javier Castellano) took advantage of a paceless field and led every step of the way en route to a 2-length win over TAMARKUZ in Belmont Park's $343,000 Kelso (GII). The 5-year-old son of Tapit has shown an affinity for Belmont's one-turn mile, having won the Westchester (GIII) in May for trainer Todd Pletcher and running second in May's "Win and You're In" Metropolitan Handicap (GI), which awarded an automatic starting berth into the Las Vegas Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile. Anchor Down is now 5-for-16 and, while he could head to Santa Anita for the two-turn Dirt Mile, Pletcher indicated he’s more likely for the one-turn Cigar Mile (GI) at Aqueduct November 26. Shadwell Stable’s Tamarkuz was pace compromised but ran well to be second for trainer Kiaran McLaughlin and could be in line for a start in the Dirt Mile. The 6-year-old son of 2004 Breeders’ Cup Sprint winner Speightstown is 7-for-19 lifetime and entered off a second-place finish to top sprinter A.P. Indian in Saratoga’s September 3 “Win and You’re In” Forego, which awarded an automatic starting berth into the TwinSpires Breeders’ Cup Sprint. Video: The Kelso The Kelso

Mark Casse trained the winner, a 2-year-old son of Tapit who built off his debut win in a local seven- furlong turf race September 4. Golden Hawk may be light on experience, but he’s long on pedigree, as his granddam Silken Cat produced 2004 Breeders’ Cup Sprint winner Speightstown. He could be a candidate for either the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf, or possibly even the Sentient Jet Breeders’ Cup Juvenile. Video: Grey Stakes

The 6-year-old son of Any Given Saturday was making his first start over the local turf since winning the Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint last October for trainer Enebish Ganbat and clearly enjoyed getting back stateside after finishing off the board in a quartet of group I stakes in Hong Kong and Great Britain. Mongolian Saturday, who is now 8-for-36 lifetime, has not missed the board in his last 12 starts in the United States and seemed fully recovered after getting sick when he was overseas. “This summer, we were in England and a doctor found (he had) a big ulcer,” Ganbat said. “It took two months (for the horse to fully recover) but it seems everything is all right. We’re going to take him to the Breeders’ Cup at Santa Anita.” Ganbat indicated Mongolian Saturday would ship to Santa Anita October 20 to prepare for his title defense. Video: Woodford Stakes
