Chronology and Faunal Evolution of the Middle Eocene Bridgerian North American Land Mammal “Age”: Achieving High Precision Geochronology Kaori Tsukui Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY 2016 © 2015 Kaori Tsukui All rights reserved ABSTRACT Chronology and Faunal Evolution of the Middle Eocene Bridgerian North American Land Mammal “Age”: Achieving High Precision Geochronology Kaori Tsukui The age of the Bridgerian/Uintan boundary has been regarded as one of the most important outstanding problems in North American Land Mammal “Age” (NALMA) biochronology. The Bridger Basin in southwestern Wyoming preserves one of the best stratigraphic records of the faunal boundary as well as the preceding Bridgerian NALMA. In this dissertation, I first developed a chronological framework for the Eocene Bridger Formation including the age of the boundary, based on a combination of magnetostratigraphy and U-Pb ID-TIMS geochronology. Within the temporal framework, I attempted at making a regional correlation of the boundary-bearing strata within the western U.S., and also assessed the body size evolution of three representative taxa from the Bridger Basin within the context of Early Eocene Climatic Optimum. Integrating radioisotopic, magnetostratigraphic and astronomical data from the early to middle Eocene, I reviewed various calibration models for the Geological Time Scale and intercalibration of 40Ar/39Ar data among laboratories and against U-Pb data, toward the community goal of achieving a high precision and well integrated Geological Time Scale. In Chapter 2, I present a magnetostratigraphy and U-Pb zircon geochronology of the Bridger Formation from the Bridger Basin in southwestern Wyoming. -

Wilson with June McNulty and David Hampshire luab County, one of Utah's earliest created counties, sits along the strategic north-south corridor of the state. Prehistoric and Native American Indian cultures roamed there, as did early Spanish priests and explorers, who left an important record of the area. Trappers and traders wandered the mountains and deserts that create stark contrasts in this geo graphically diverse county. Mark Twain, an early traveler through parts of luab, penned interesting insights of the county, which contained portions of the Pony Express and Overland Stage routes. Colorado 80215 On June 2. 1983. the U.S. Geological Survey lost a highly valued member, and the science of geology a gifted scientist. Lawrence C. Craig, who died of a heart attack at the age of 65. He is survived by his wife, Rachel; his father, Gerald, of Brighton, Colorado; a sister. Alice Craig Erney, of Madison. Wisconsin; a son. Gerald, of Flagstaff. Arizona; two daughters. Eliza beth Craig Rich, of Buffalo. New York, and Phebe Craig, of Oakland. California; and four grandchildren. Larry was the son of Dr. Gerald Spellman Craig and Prudence Bower Craig. He was born in Plainview. Texas, in 1918 while his father was overseas in World War 1. Dr. Craig has been a leader and innovator in elementary school science and an author of many texts and papers on science for elementary schools and ele mentary school teachers. He taught at Teachers College. Columbia, from 1924 to 1956. Larry’s mother was of pioneer stock, born on a homestead in the Red River Valley of North Dakota. Later her family moved to a farm near Olton. Texas, and she graduated from nearby Weyland College in Plainview. It was in Texas that she met and married Gerald, who had just graduated from Baylor University. They were married 67 years; she died just three months before her son, Lawrence. Larry graduated from Horace Mann School for Boys in 1935. entered Swarthmore that fall, and graduated with a degree in zoology-chemistry in 1939. -

PETROGENESIS OF THE OLIGOCENE EAST TINTIC VOLCbyANIC FIELD, UTAH Daniel K. Moore1, Jeffrey D. Keith2, Eric H. Christiansen2, Choon-Sik Kim3, David G. Tingey2, Stephen T. Nelson2, and Douglas S. Flamm2 ABSTRACT The early Oligocene East Tintic volcanic field of central Utah, located near the eastern margin of the Basin and Range Province, consists of mafic to silicic volcanic (mostly intermediate-composition lava flows) and shallow intrusive rocks associated with the formation of small, nested calderas. Radiometric ages establish a minimum age for initiation (34.94 ± 0.10 Ma) and cessation (32.70 ± 0.28 Ma) of East Tintic magmatism. The igneous rocks of the field are calc-alkalic, potassic, silica-oversaturated, and met- aluminous, and can be categorized into the following three compositional groups: the shoshonite-trachyte series, the trachyandesite series, and the rhyolite series. Based on composition and phenocryst assemblage, the shoshonite-trachyte series is divided into two groups: a clinopyroxene group and a two-pyroxene group. The rhyolite series consists of three field units: the Packard Quartz Latite, the Fernow Quartz Latite, and the rhyolite of Keystone Springs. The trachyandesite series is by far the most voluminous. This series is also subdivided into a clinopyroxene group and a two-pyroxene group. Temperature and oxygen fugacity estimates indicate that shoshonite-trachyte series magmas were the hottest and least oxidizing and that two-pyroxene trachyandesite series magmas were the coolest and most oxidizing. Clinopyroxene shoshonite-trachyte series magma evolved mainly by fractional crystallization. The high K2O, Rb, and Al2O3/CaO ratios and modest SiO2 enrichment of these rocks appear to result from extensive, high-pressure fractional crystallization of clinopyroxene (without plagioclase). -
