This Guide? Picture this. You have spent hours developing a lesson built around web resources that zero in on an important concept for your students. You have the lesson prepared and go back to fill in the citation details and check that all your links work. Wait— where did that diagram come from? Was it the one you scanned from the textbook, or the one you found online? The link you wrote down for the collection of math videos actually links to a gambling site. You have 10 resources you have to include in your references, and you are not sure whether you need to italicize the titles. Three resources don’t have authors. How do you alphabetize them? Do you use all three authors’ names of that journal article in your in-text citation? As you scramble to finish by the deadline, you wonder how you might have avoided disaster. Exaggerated? Of course, but this guide provides practical ways to help you avoid the “Where did that come from?” syndrome and organize to make citing simpler. Appropriate citation gets more complicated as the online environment constantly changes and the variety of sources instructors use expands. One indicator of this difficulty is that the Citation standard in the eCampusAlberta Essential Quality Standards is one of the most common standards not met in course reviews. This standard states, “All academic content in the course is appropriately cited.” The Essential level criteria are Quotations and other material, including graphic images, used from outside sources are appropriately cited within the course materials (e.g., APA). A bibliography or reference list includes all citations. This can be presented in one location for the entire course, broken down for each module, or in other appropriate methods that allow learners to view sources of course content (eCampusAlberta, 2013, p. 5). eCampusAlberta Citation Preparation Guide 2 This guide is designed to help course developers meet the Citation standard. In addition to information on citing sources using American Psychological Association (APA) or Modern Languages Association (MLA) format, the two formats most often used by eCampusAlberta course developers, this guide shares Common citation errors course reviewers find, Ways to correct these errors, Tips on streamlining the citation process using software and web-based tools, and Suggestions for making the citation process simpler, easier, and, perhaps, more fun. Why Cite Sources? Academic integrity requires that educators cite sources not only to give credit for others’ ideas, but to Ensure their students can find the sources of those ideas, Empower their students’ learning by placing their learning in a wider context, Hold themselves to the same standards of integrity they require of their students, and Model the citation process for those students. After all, When it comes to academic integrity, faculty are the first and most important point of contact for students. You have a vital role to play in educating students about academic integrity, encouraging a climate of integrity, and modelling appropriate academic behavior (MacEwan Office of Academic Integrity, 2014, p. 2). Why Follow a Citation Standard? The eCampusAlberta Citation standard requires course developers to cite sources
