Accountant Joe Hanita should be easy to spot when he pulls into the Te Wananga o Aotearoa carpark on Factory Road next week. He’ll be the one with the huge grin driving a brand new BMW. Mr Hanita was named the Westpac Outstanding New Member of the Year at the 2011 New Zealand 8471726AA Institute of Chartered Accountants’ Leader- ship Awards in Well- ington last week. He says being acknowledged as a finalist for the award was an honour, but to win the title was a ‘‘hugely humbling experience’’. ‘‘I am the recipient of this award, but I want to acknowledge all the people who have supported me. ‘‘Really all of those people share the award, I am only one person of a much big- ger team.’’ Mr Hanita works as a group accountant for Te Wananga of Aotea- roa in Te Awamutu, leading a team that is responsible for millions of dollars that

BY COLIN THORSEN

Te Awamutu Primary School (TAPS) officially launched their own radio station in conjunction with the opening of their new library and mid-year the station received a car to enter into the Kihikihi Demolition Derby on April 21, 2012. Students have stripped and prepared the vehicle for racing, and each and every child at the school has put their name to the car. ‘‘The car will appear in the Christmas Parade, then be on display at the front of the school to launch the promotion for finding a driver as we build up to the Demolition Derby,’’ says principal, Gareth Duncan. ‘‘Already in the early stages of the driver promotion, the Radio Station team are looking at more than 10 contenders for this position.’’

TC081211CT02 (RIGHT) PRIDE OF PLACE: Te Awamutu Primary School students, from left, Tyrah Rowland (10), Katrina Amituanai (10), Liam Labuschagne (9) and Leon Mackey (8) add their names to the TAPS Radio Station car bound for the Demolition Derby at McDonald’s Kihikihi Speedway in 2012.

Tyre and Tune owner Shane Eichler has a passion for classic American cars and a passion for speedway — so his latest promotion combines the two. With the help of GT Radials he has prepared his 1969 Pontiac Grand Prix to compete in next year’s Kihikihi Speedway Demolition Derby and one of his tyre customers will win the drive. Mr Eichler has driven in a couple of demolition derbies and says they are great fun and very exciting — so next year he wants to give someone else the chance to enjoy the experience. He also points out the Pontiac is beyond restoration, but is still a strong runner. The Grand Prix was the Pontiac performance model of the era and runs a 428ci (7 litre) big block V8 which made 390hp from the factory. Blair Castleton is preparing the car to comply with safety regulations for the derby. Mr Eichler believes the winner of the competition should have a good chance — it’s a strong car, with plenty of power, and the engine is well protected.

Cancer Kids party thanks to Mt Pirongia Lions Club

Once again Mt Pirongia Lions hosted their Annual Cancer Kids Christmas Party at Pirongia School on Sunday. Club member John Young says despite the day starting off wet, famil- ies from all over the region and as far afield as Tauranga, came to join in the fun. Santa wasn’t able to arrive by helicopter because of the rain, but 8478673AA the clowns did arrive by fire engine. Thrills for the children included riding round the playing fields on the backs of super motorbikes, a ride in the fire engine and a Police car with their sirens blaring. It certainly was exciting and noisy, even drawing a complaint to the Council’s Noise Control Officer. Mr Young says it is a once a year function for CHRISTMAS children who need cheer- ing up and Mt Pirongia Lions are committed to the event.
