Waipa District Libraries’ Artists at Work 2018 started this week in Te Awamutu Library’s Community Room to showcase some of the district’s best artists and crafts-people. Heather Campbell has recently returned from New South Wales to live in Te Awa- mutu and was a participant in the first session on Tuesday. She paints in oils — mainly portraits and commissions — but is also looking to expand into more landscape, which she enjoys. 12 Te Awamutu Courier Thursday, March 15, 2018 Official opening of The Powerhouse

Waipa Mayor Jim Mylchreest officially opened the new home of Te Awamutu law firm Edmonds Judd on Saturday — The Powerhouse, 486 Alexandra Street. A large crowd of clients, along with people associated with the building’s refurbishment, and past and present staff and their families, were present for the official opening. The Mayor and Edmonds Judd managing partner Simon Brdanovic spoke to the onlookers and officially opened the building for business. While The Powerhouse has TC150318SPJIM been completely modernised CROWD gathered for Saturday’s official opening of The Powerhouse. and refurbished, the building has had a long and varied his- tory as the former home to New Zealand’s first power board — hence the name The Power- house. Jim referred to Edmonds Judd’s origins dating back nearly 140 years in Te Awamutu, joking that this was probably in response to the local Council being formed only a few years earlier, and the inundation of rules and regulations as a result. However, he said that it was his aim to reduce unnecessary bureaucratic restrictions, and projects such as The Power- house were examples of this in Te Awamutu.
