For Immediate Release Press Contact: Audrey Ross/Publicity 212.877.3399 or [email protected] 100 Dancers to present THE TABLE OF SILENCE PROJECT, a public tribute to 9/11 and prayer for peace, conceived by choreographer Jacqulyn Buglisi and Italian artist Rosella Vasta. Sunday September 11, 8:20 AM, ending at 8:46 AM on the Josie Robertson Plaza at Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts Choreographer Jacqulyn Buglisi is creating a site-specific "Ceremonial Event" for 100 dancers, drawn from the New York City dance community, entitled "The Table of Silence Project," to commemorate the tenth anniversary of 9/11. Buglisi Dance Theatre is partnering on this project with Dance/NYC and The September Project. Participants are dancers from Buglisi Dance Theatre, The Juilliard School, the Martha Graham Center of Contemporary Dance, The Ailey School, National Dance Institute, Ballet Hispanico, STEPS on Broadway, and Peridance Capezio Center. This free public event will take place Sunday September 11th at Lincoln Center's Josie Robertson Plaza. 100 dancers will gather in silent procession, forming patterns of concentric circles to create a peace labyrinth while encircling the Revson Fountain as a symbol of eternity, compassion and continuity of the life cycle. At 8:46 AM, recalling the moment when American Airlines Flight 11 crashed into the North Tower, the dancers will turn their wrists with open palms and extend their arms to the sky for one minute, evoking the simple gesture of universal peace. The dancers invite all spectators to join them in this ritual. As described by the choreographer, "The Table of Silence Project" represents the common threads of humanity which unite all mankind into a single force with common goals and aspirations, regardless of race, culture or religion.

  • The Juilliard Journal Online Reflecting on September 11 by Eve Jacobs September 11, 2011, 6:10 A.M
The Juilliard Journal Online Reflecting on September 11 by Eve Jacobs September 11, 2011, 6:10 a.m. After four hours of sleep, I reluctantly rolled out of bed, dressed in white, and walked across the street to the basement of Lincoln Center’s David H. Koch Theater. Gathered there were more than 100 other dancers, 19 of us from Juilliard. We costumed ourselves in flowing white tunics, marked our faces with white powder, and filed outside to the fountain, where we would soon dance, march, and pray to honor the 10th anniversary of the September 11 attacks in Jacqulyn Buglisi’s Table of Silence Project. I had initially avoided signing up for this project, thinking it unwise to be present at a large gathering with political implications on 9/11 in New York. As the day drew closer, however, I read an article in The Atlantic called “About That Day: A diary of 9/11” by Rhett Miller. I read of his skepticism, his shock, his postponement of a planned wedding proposal on this day, and his frantic escape from a crumbling quarter of New York City. Ten years ago today, I was a fourth grader at an elementary school outside of Chicago. I had a slim understanding, if any, of what was going on and why all my teachers were crying. Besides increased airport security, I can’t say that the event altered my life even once I was old enough to understand. I knew no one who was hurt in the attacks, nor did I have friends who had any loved ones harmed in New York, at the Pentagon, or in the fields of Pennsylvania at the crash site of United Airlines Flight 93.

PROGRAM In José Limón’s Chaconne a lone dancer (and each of us) has the power to open up the space around. José Limón filmed on the Ted Shawn Theatre stage in 1948, then live, here and now. In my work Corvidae, the natural world surrounding us speaks through an invocation of those ubiquitous crows and ravens, unpredictable, totally present and untamable. The Moor’s Pavane (Limón) is the 1949 masterwork drawn from the early tale that became Shakespeare’s Othello in 1603. Elegance, formality, and rich musicality carry this tragedy of the concerns that are front and center in today’s world. After the intermission, Kate Weare’s Night Light is a crisp and luminous world in which our more fragmented time-twelve individuals living intensely, in and out of twisting charged relationships, in our presently shifting lines between private and public. Limón returns us to Bach with A Suite from A Choreographic Offering, created in celebration of Doris Humphrey, Limón’s teacher and mentor.
