Organization Profile Para Los Niños (PLN) is a nonprofit organization that has worked for more than thirty years to create academic success and social well bring for children. Through early education centers, charter schools, and wellness centers, it offers high quality education integrated with family support, mental health services, and community engagement opportunities to thousands of children living in at- risk neighborhoods in Los Angeles County.

Definition: The Early Childhood Prevention Initiative (ECOPI) is a four year initiative bringing together a broad range of partners to implement community-based public education, skills-building and environmental changes that promote physical activity and healthy eating. The grant, funded by First 5 LA, targets the nearly one million LA County children 0-5 years of age and their families. The Los Angeles County Department of was awarded a grant from First 5 LA. This partnership is helping to support First 5 LA’s Strategic Plan Goal for children to maintain a healthy weight.

Para Los Niños is partnering with Choose Health LA Kids which is one arm of the ECOPI initiative. The goal of this program will be to provide and physical activity education and resources to families with children ages 0-5. These efforts are focusing in communities in SPA 4 with rates above the county average including Downtown LA/Skid Row, Westlake, Koreatown, Chinatown, McArthur Park, and Temple Beaudry.

Parent Support Circles of Los Angeles County (PSCLAC) is a 30 month project funded by First 5 Los Angeles and overseen by Children’s Institute, Inc. The objective is to start 100 peer support groups for parents of children age 0-5 in Los Angeles County; 20 groups will be created in each Supervisorial District. Para Los Niños is coordinating efforts in District 2, which includes neighborhoods in South Los Angeles, Culver City, Baldwin Hills, Inglewood, Lennox, Hawthorne, Gardena, Compton, Lynwood, and Carson - among many others.

The Community Promoter will be a liaison to the community to increase linkages to resources for children and families. 50% of time will be spent delivering nutrition workshops and organizing community events in order to promote healthy eating and physical activity. 50% of time will be spent supporting Resource Facilitators who are guiding peers in parent support groups in Supervisorial District 2.

Essential Job Duties:

Choose Health LA Kids  Create and maintain a respectful and trustful relationship with the CHLA Kids team and all stakeholders involved in the ECOPI initiative.  Aid in the implementation of the initiative through participating in appropriate meetings and program activities.  Outreach and promote activities  Work directly with parents in leading nutrition workshops and community events, including cooking demonstration, grocery store/farmers market trips, and physical activity.

 Create of agendas, print, track and scan attendance sign-in sheets; record, type and print meeting notes; prepare and provide meeting materials such as healthy snacks, transportation support, and supplies and following up with group representatives and attendees with next steps and meeting announcements.  Work directly with parents to provide support with capacity building skill development to promote nutrition and physical activity to their communities.  Assist with the planning, design, and supply of language and culturally appropriate materials and resources for activities.  Engage and provide information to community residents, partners, and community agencies about the initiative and activities at community fairs, events and other outreach opportunities.  Conduct presentations and provide information to community residents, partners, and schools about the initiative and activities.  Work in collaboration with other Community Promotor/as (Promoters), staff, and key partners to increase awareness of community resources and ensure linkages to programs and services.  Participate in related trainings, conferences, and meetings as required.  Other duties as assigned and deemed appropriate by the Program Director and Program Coordinator. Parent Support Circles of Los Angeles County  Assist with the planning, design, and supply of appropriate materials and resources for support groups in the community.  Engage and participate in community efforts to align with other initiatives supporting parents of children ages 0-5.  Conduct presentations and provide information to community residents, partners, and other stakeholders about program objectives and activities.  Participate in related trainings and meetings, as required.  Other duties as assigned and deemed appropriate by the Program Director.

Other Responsibilities:  Carry out mission, vision, and values established by Para Los Niños’ president/CEO and board of directors, as well as those established by CHLA Kids and Parent Support Circles of Los Angeles County.  Participate in the overall agency accreditation/ continuous quality improvement processes.  Must have the ability to nurture respectful relationships with Partnership members, including staff and vendors, community agencies and leaders, and parents and other community stakeholders. Must be sensitive to the cultural needs of all participants.

Qualifications:

Choose Health LA Kids  Combination of education and experience in community outreach and organizing. Promotor/a (Promoter) Certificate is preferred.  Ability to teach nutrition curriculum and connect parents with resources  Ability to maintain positive relationships with parents, community members, agency staff, and Para Los Niños personnel.  Creates a feeling of confidence in parents/families, so they can comfortably express questions and concerns related to nutrition and obesity.  Able to work in an autonomous setting, yet function as part of a larger team.  Able to communicate verbally and in writing in Spanish and English is a plus.  Experience working with the communities in SPA 4.  Excellent organization skills, self starter, can do attitude and positive approach.  Ability to handle multiple tasks.  Ability to handle confidential and time sensitive material.  Computer proficiency (Windows, MS Word, Internet), social media such as Facebook and Twitter is a plus.  Understand and support the ECOPI initiative, and goals related to CHLA Kids.  Extensive experience working in the community, and knowledge of Para Los Niños and community resources related to nutrition and obesity.  Experience working in a multicultural settings and sensitive to multicultural issues.  Ability to work a flexible schedule, which will include occasional evenings and/or weekends. Parent Support Circles of Los Angeles County  Bachelor’s degree in related field  Demonstrated work experience in cross-cultural collaborations and working with agency administrators.  Experience working with vulnerable populations.  Excellent oral and written communication skills with diverse populations. State required automobile insurances coverage.  TB test, to be renewed every two years.  Ability to work a flexible schedule, which will include occasional evenings and/or weekends.  Able to work in an autonomous setting, yet function as part of a larger team.
