  • Scottish Disability Sport - the First Fifty Years Richard Brickley MBE Foreword
Scottish Disability Sport - The First Fifty Years Richard Brickley MBE Foreword I was delighted to be asked by Chief Executive Gavin Macleod to record the first fifty years of Scottish Disability Sport, to mark the occasion of the 50th Anniversary of the Association. Initially the project was intended to be small but the more I researched, the more it brought back memories of great athletes, superb volunteers and great times. I became determined to try and do justice to as many as those great people as possible. I am certain I shall have forgotten key people in the eyes of others and if so I apologise profusely. For almost four decades SDS has been for me a way of life. The volunteers I have had the pleasure of working with for almost three decades are those I remember with great fondness, particularly during the early years. I applaud the many athletes who contributed to the rich history and success of SDS over fifty years. Outstanding volunteers like Bob Mitchell, Mary Urquhart, David Thomson, Jean Stone, Chris Cohen and Colin Rains helped to develop and sustain my passion for disability sport. I have been privileged to work with exceptional professionals like Ken Hutchison, Derek Casey, Liz Dendy, Paul Bush, Bob Price, Louise Martin, Sheila Dobie, Fiona Reid, Eddie McConnell, Gavin MacLeod, Mary Alison, Heather Lowden, Lawrie Randak, Tracey McCillen, Archie Cameron and many others whose commitment to inclusive sport has been obvious and long lasting. I thank Jean Stone, Jacqueline Lynn, Heather Lowden, Maureen Brickley and Paul Noble who acted as “readers” during the writing of the history and Norma Buchanan for administrative support at important stages.

  • Julia Anna Jastrząbek the Olympic Games in Post-Socialist
ROZPRAWY NAUKOWE Akademii Wychowania Fizycznego we Wrocławiu 2019, 65, 1–15 Julia Anna Jastrząbek Poznań University of Economics and Business THE OLYMPIC GAMES IN POST-SOCIALIST CITIEs – a rEAL goAL OR DISTANT FUTURE? CASE STUDIES OF CRACOW AND ALMATY The collapse of the Soviet Union has led to historical transitions in Central and Eastern Europe. The political and economic transformation in countries located in this world’s region has caused their dynamic socioeconomic development and more stable position on the international stage. Regarding the potential of hosting the Olympic Games as an opportunity for infrastructural im- provements, employment boost, and presentation of a positive image and traditions of a country, post-Soviet cities have entered the race for staging Olympic events. The main aim of this article is to analyse the bidding process for the 2022 Winter Olympic Games with an emphasis on case studies from two bidding cities with post-socialist history – Cracow and Almaty. Characteristic patterns and features of both cities’ bids, as well as differences between them are drawn, with conclusions on why these were unsuccessful. Cracow and Almaty’s bid paths in the 2022 Winter Olympics process were different. Cracow pulled out from the race during the applicant phase because of referendum results: the city residents were against the Olympics, while Almaty reached the final phase and lost to Beijing in final voting. It seems that post-socialist countries still have a weaker bargaining position in the bidding process than candidates with advanced and estab- lished economies. Key words: Winter Olympic Games, mega-events, post-socialist cities, political economy INTRODUCTION Since the disintegration process of the Eastern Bloc was accomplished, many new independent countries or those which regained their sovereignty lost after the Second World War have appeared on the world map.

  • 2015 Belgium Country Report | SGI Sustainable Governance Indicators
Sustainable Governance Indicators SGI 2015 Belgium Report Micael Castanheira, Benoît Rihoux, Nils C. Bandelow (Coordinator) SGI 2015 | 2 Belgium Report Executive Summary Belgium, located in the heart of Europe, is a small country with 11.1 million inhabitants. In 2013, its gross domestic product (GDP) was €395 billion at market prices (i.e. 14.5% above the 2007 pre-crisis level of €345 billion; data from the Belgian National Bank). Belgium has shown itself to be one of the good performers in the euro area in recent years. According to Eurostat data, Belgium’s purchasing power per capita is about 10.2% above the euro area average, and 19% above the EU28 average. Belgium also boasts an extremely open economy, with the sum of imports and exports amounting to 170% of GDP; the country’s trade balance is slightly positive. The unemployment rate was 8.5% in September 2014, which is below the euro area average (11.5%). Belgium is thus economically rather healthy, although not among the best performing economies of the EU. It boasts a highly educated population, attracts substantial foreign direct investment, maintains high-quality hospitals, has a healthy housing market (i.e. it did not crash during the financial crisis, but recent estimates still suggest some overvaluation of the market) and overall manages a well-performing economy. With its comprehensive road, rail, water and information technology networks, in addition to its world-class harbors, Belgium provides direct access to and from the rest of the world into Europe. Its openness in terms of trade and high reliance on exports implies that Belgian companies must remain competitive or face losing their market position.

Eurozone crisis forces Belgium to finally form a government | World ... http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2011/dec/01/eurozone-crisis-forces-b... Eurozone crisis forces Belgium to finally form a government Eurozone crisis forces Belgian politicians to act and form a coalition with French-speaking Elio Di Rupo at the helm Angelique Chrisafis guardian.co.uk, Thursday 1 December 2011 19.56 GMT Belgium's chief negotiator in charge of forming a cabinet, Elio Di Rupo, (2nd R) and party leaders meet in Brussels, Photograph: Thierry Roge/REUTERS Students tried stripping to their underwear and handing out free chips; giant lions and roosters snogged in the street; the country's leading actor ordered all men to go on shaving strike; and a woman senator said politicians' wives should deny them sex. But in the end, it took a looming financial meltdown in the eurozone to force Belgium's absurdly divided and squabbling political class to form a government. After breaking the modern-day world record for failing to form a government – making war-torn Iraq look like amateurs – Belgium has surmounted the linguistic and cultural stand-off that threatened to wipe it from the map, and agreed to form a coalition in the name of sorting out its finances. After 535 days without a proper leader – the country has been led by a transitional caretaker government – Belgian officials said there was now likely to be a coalition cabinet in place next week. But the crisis has left divisions more deeply entrenched than ever between the rich, Dutch-speaking north and poorer, French-speaking south, with melting pot Brussels marooned in the middle.

sustainability Article Olympic Infrastructure—Global Problems of Local Communities on the Example of Rio 2016, PyeongChang 2018, and Krakow 2023 Bartosz Dendura Faculty of Architecture, Cracow University of Technology, 31-155 Kraków, Poland; [email protected]; Tel.: +48-12-374-2443 Received: 31 October 2019; Accepted: 18 December 2019; Published: 23 December 2019 Abstract: Every potential Olympic Games organiser assumers that the games they organise will be special, that they will help to set new, high standards both in the organisation of sports events themselves, as well as in the planning and carrying out of projects accompanying the games. Since the document entitled Agenda 21 was approved by the UN at the Earth Summit in 1992, environmental protection has become the mainstay of the discussion among the Olympic family, and the problem of sustainable planning has become one of the main features of published reports. The conclusion of the conference coincided with the Lillehammer Winter Olympics of 1994, which were praised as the first green games to be held, under the motto “White Green Games”. Four years prior, in Nagano, its organisers advertised the games with the slogan “Coexistence with nature”. London 2012, with its motto “Inspire a Generation”, highlighted the educational aspect of the events and the words “environment” and “sustainability” were on the lips of everyone everywhere in the context of every activity the organisers were undertaking. During Rio 2016, the motto was “Green Games for Blue Planet”. The goal of the article is to investigate whether these mottoes have been actually reflected in the measures taken by authorities and encompassing the period between proclaiming them as Games organisers, during the sports event itself, and during the post-Games period.
