Louisiana Marriages to 1850 about King, William Spouse 1: King, William Spouse 2: Phares, Mary M. Marriage Date: 10 Feb 1841 Marriage Location: Louisiana East Feliciana Parish

------Reverend William King

William King was born on November 11th, . He attended the Glascow University where he was influenced by social reforms and the work of the famous British abolitionist, Sir Thomas Foxwell Buxton. In 1834 William King emigrated with his parents to North America. The family settled on a land. Ohio farm and then moved to South Jackson Louisiana. Here he became Rector of Matthew's Academy which was a private school for children of wealthy plantation owners. Eventually William King married Mary Phares and she brought four slaves. King was totally opposed to any such idea and publicly protested slavery.

Rev. William King

From the very beginning King was against slavery. After his son and daughter both died, King returned to Scotland where he continued his schooling to become a minister and missionary. His wife, Mary Phares died while in Scotland. The Presbyterian Church of Scotland posted him to do missionary work in Canada. In 1846 King arrived in Canada when he learned of his father in laws death. King immediately returned to Louisiana where he inherited his wife's property and retrieved his slaves to return to Canada. He arrived back in Canada in 1848 with 14 black slaves and 4 year old Solomon, the son of one of the slaves. This was the beginning of William King's black community in November of 1849. King did marry again while he lived on the Elgin Settlement, his second wife, Jemima, (who was white) was known to be a bit eccentric. She supposedly was unable to have children of her own and would try to take babies on the street away from their parents. However she was a musician and taught music at the settlement. He died in 1895 at age 82. A character based on Reverend William King is portrayed in Harriet Beacher Stowe's book - Dred, A Tale of the Great Swamp. ------The Elgin settlement, also known as Buxton, was the last of four organized black settlements to come into existence in Canada. The black population of Canada West and Chatham was already high because of the area's proximity to the United States of America. The land was purchased by the Elgin Association through the Presbyterian Synod for the purpose of creating a settlement. The land lay 12 miles south of Chatham. When news of the Elgin settlement spread, white settlers became worried, and attempted to block its development with a petition. Regardless of sentiment, plans for the settlement went ahead and many of Buxton's settlers feared for the life of William King due to the resistance of whites.

Rev. William King

Founder of the Elgin Settlement, Rev. William King established a community that still exists today. This community is considered by many as one of the only settlements began as a haven for Blacks escaping slavery to have been a success. Much of the credit for the success of the settlement must be given to Rev. William King and his thoughtful development of this community.

William King believed that blacks could function successfully in a working society if given the same educational opportunities as white children. "Blacks are intellectually capable of absorbing classical and abstract matters." Being a reverend and teacher, the building of a school and church in the settlement was found necessary by him. The settlement also was home to the logging industry. George Brown, who later became one of the Fathers of Confederation was a supporter of William King and helped build the settlement.

1849

When William King and his fifteen former slaves arrived at the land, which was bought for the settlement, a family was already waiting and others began to arrive soon afterwards. The first settler, Isaac Riley, was already waiting at the settlement before King even arrived. Mostly all adults living in the settlement had been slaves before. The settlement was made of 9 000 acres of land, 6 miles in length, 3 in width situated between the Great Western Railway and Lake Erie. The land was divided into farms of 50 acres each. Certain standards had to be maintained in the settlement regarding property conditions. Land had to be purchased by the settlers at the price of $2.50/acre. The payments could be made in ten equal installments with 6% interest. Ten years was allowed for the settlers to pay for their farms, most settlers would have had a deed in possession by then. The settlers were given no money, no grants of land, nor farming tools; the only thing given was protection and advice.

======William King was born 11 November 1812 in Northern Ireland, son of William King, a farmer, and Elizabeth Torrence. He was sent in his early teens to an academy near Coleraine where he received a classical education. He attended the University of Glasgow but left in 1833 to move with his family to the United States and settle in Ohio. He moved south in 1835 to Jackson, Louisiana, where he taught and became rector of Mathews Academy. He married Mary Mourning Phares, 10 January 1841, in East Feliciana, Louisiana, the daughter of a wealthy slave owner. King, who had become disillusioned with southern society and slavery, returned to Scotland in 1843 to study theology and was licensed to preach by the Free Church of Scotland. His wife died while they were in Scotland. Appointed by the church's colonial committee to serve as a missionary in Canada, King returned to North America alone in 1846.

King conceived a plan to return to Louisiana to sell his estate, bring his slaves to Canada, and free them. Returning to Canada in June 1848, he proposed creating a settlement that would offer Blacks land, education, and religion. The synod of the Presbyterian Church in Canada formed a committee, including Rev. Robert Burns and Rev. Michael Willis, to assist in his design and they selected a large tract of land in Raleigh township near Chatham, Canada West (Ontario). King became the managing director of a stock company named the Elgin Association with authorization to purchase the land and establish the Elgin settlement. In spite of local opposition led by Edwin Larwill, King arrived in Elgin on 28 November 1849 with the fifteen slaves he had freed to form the nucleus of the new settlement. The Elgin Association governed the secular affairs of the community while the Buxton Mission, supported by the Presbyterian Church, attended to its religious needs. Black families acquired 50 acre lots which they cleared and farmed. The population of the settlement, known both as Elgin and Buxton, had grown to 130 families by 1853.

King remarried, 15 September 1853, to Jemima Nicolina Baxter at Buxton. He had been ordained by the Canadian church in 1851 and during the 1850s travelled extensively in North America and Great Britain to raise funds for the mission. The success of the settlement did not forestall an exodus back to the United States after the outbreak of the Civil War. Seventy men from Elgin enlisted in the northern army. The settlement continued but the Elgin Association, no longer required, eventually dissolved in 1873. King retired from active ministry on 10 July 1883 but continued to preach on occasion. After the death of his wife in 1887, he moved from Elgin to Chatham where he died, 5 January 1895.

In 1840 he removed to York Township, now Fulton County, where he has since resided. In February 1852 he was married to Miss Jane Kane who survives him, five daughters and two sons were born to him. One daughter and one son have preceded him to that rest beyond. 1869 he united with the Presbyterian Church at Delta and in 1882 was elected to the Eldership of said church, which position he held the remainder of his life.

April 12th 1887 he departed this life aged 68 years 9 months and 15 days such is a brief sketch of the life of our pioneer brother. But it tells nothing of his life of industry, of upright and honest dealing with his neighbors of Christian example and tender care of his family, of love and affection for his companion, his unblemished character as a member of the church and the months of wonderful suffering of that dreadful disease cancer which ended his life. All of which he patiently bore looking forward to the coming rest, reckoning that the pain of his disease was not to be compare to the joys of the world to come. His remains were laid to rest in the Delta Cemetery.

Terry M Supple of Woodland Hills, California said this about Edward L. “Shorty” and Jeanie Gordon: Edward L. “Shorty” Gordon was an Air Force tail gunner, shot down over Europe. His story is similar to Uppy's in that he was sent to Birmingham Hospital, where he met and married a young nurse, Jeanie. Shorty and Jeanie lived across the street from us, and like the Updykes, always enjoyed being around the neighborhood kids. Shorty was a handsome Texan who had a wonderful upper body physique. It must have been very difficult for him to be confined to a wheelchair. It didn't stop him however. He enjoyed shooting hoops with the kids on the driveway, and could sink a two-hand set shot from 30 feet away. He was employed in sales at a steel supply yard and got me a job driving a truck for them during my high school years. He and Jeanie also “adopted” one of my brothers, Rory. Even after we all moved out of the

38 Produced by Legacy Descendants of William Sr. King

neighborhood, Rory returned often for dinner… or to sit around for a few drinks with Shorty and some of his buddies. Both Shorty and Jeanie have passed away. But I was always struck by the love that bound the two people together, knowing as they did that once they committed to each other, it really was “for better or worse.” As I noted earlier, the group of men and their wives were wonderful to be around. Although they experienced many physical hardships, they moved on with their lives, making them as normal as possible. 218 M ii. Merle Kelley.
