Parker House Boston, Massachusetts February 2, 1988

Welcome to the 52nd New England Circle. Tonight, the Circle draws around Father Daniel Berrigan, a Jesuit priest, poet, teacher, one who has committed his life to justice and opportunity for all This evening, a tradition inaugurated here at the Parker House in the 19th Century endures. Literary giants such as Ralph Waldo Emerson, Charles Dickens, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow and others, gathered regularly for meetings of the Saturday Club. Their lively informal discussions formed a tradition that continues to influence today's Circle which began here fifteen years ago. Today, we invite men and women from different cultures, political persuasions, diverse professions and points of view to engage our Discussion Leaders and enliven our Circles. We invite as many guests as we can to participate in the limited number of Circles held each year. However, once a part of the Circle, always a member of the New England Circle. Father Berrigan's lifetime witness has been characterized by dramatic protest He was one of the "" who burned 600 draft records to decry the Vietnam conflict. Recently, as one of the "Plowshares Eight", he and seven others poured blood on the nose cone of a missle in a Philadelphia assemble plant because of their passionate opposition to nuclear weapons. Our Discussion Leader will be engaged in conversation by Janet Langhart For several years, Janet dominated local television with her sparkling, yet revealing, interviews with persons of all stripes. Her reporting has ranged from the crisis at Three Mile Island to interpreting the complexities of medical and scientific breakthroughs. Though currently a Boston Herald columnist, her specialty is scintillating conversation Certainly, our Discussion Leader will give us much to think and talk about as he responds to questions from Janet Langhart Maybe there will come an answer to one of America's most pressing questions: Can America offer peace, equal opportunity and equal justice to all?
