Captain F. TICKELL CMG, CNF [1857 – 1919] Captain Tickell was President of the Club in 1905 1 Frederick Tickell was born on 7 March 1857 at Amoy Harbour, China (now Xiamen). He was the son of Captain George Tickell [1823-1890], mariner and member of the Royal Naval Reserve, who was born in London and died in Melbourne. His mother was Charlotte May (née Crabbe) [1821-1877]. She was born in Berkshire and died in Melbourne. He had three siblings: 1 Under the Club’s original 1892 “Rules” or “Constitution”, the Presidency of the Club alternated “as of right” between the senior Army and Naval Commanders in the Colony (and later the State) of Queensland. A separate elected position of “Chairman of Committee” also existed who, as implied by its name, actively managed the Club through its volunteer Committee Members – including Honorary Secretary and Treasurer. In 1910 the Rules were amended to reflect a governance model, which has essentially existed ever since, where the elected President chaired the Club Committee. We thank the History Interest Group and other volunteers who have researched and prepared these Notes The series will be progressively expanded and developed. The Duckenfield Expedition 31 March -1 April 2005
The Duckenfield Expedition 31st March -1st April 2005 The Oceanic Research Foundation Ltd., the NSW Heritage Office and the Australian National Maritime Museum were represented by members and staff during a two-day expedition to the wreck of the ss Duckenfield. Logistical support was provided by Mr Dick Smith in the form of the M/Y Ulysses Blue and crew. The expedition had two primary objectives. Firstly, to conduct a re-survey of the ss Duckenfield (Mr David Nutley - NSW Heritage Office; Mr Stirling Smith and Mr Lee Graham -Australian National Maritime Museum). The survey achieved its primary objectives which were to assess the current condition of the site, obtain detailed photographic and video images of the site and to assess the extent and cause of deterioration of the Scotch boiler. The second objective was to field-test submersible electronic equipment (modulated fluorometers) used in biological research (Dr John Runcie – Oceanic Research Foundation Ltd.). The fluorometers provided credible light and temperature data, and regularly measured photosynthetic activity of selected samples for 12 hours. The test provided useful and revealing data regarding the operation of the device, and specific issues arising from the results are now being addressed in the development of the next generation of modulated fluorometer. A further objective of the study was to assess the suitability of the Ulysses Blue for proposed future research activities and determine the nature of any constraints that would influence the conduct of these activities. Dr Don Richards and Mr Colin Putt (both Fellows of the Oceanic Research Foundation Ltd.) provided valuable assistance and advice throughout the expedition and gained valuable first-hand experience of the utility of the Ulysses Blue as a research vessel. -

Roberts2 1Norwegian Centre for Maritime and Diving Medicine, Haukeland University Hospital, Norway 2Medical School, Swansea University, Swansea, United Kingdom ABstract Background: There is very limited systematic analysis of the causes and consequences of maritime accidents across the whole passenger sector during the twentieth century either in United Kingdom (UK) or in other maritime nations, but some of the larger events have been the subject of detailed investigations that led to improved safety measures. In recent years, there has been increased attention to the analysis of passenger ship accidents, especially in relation to the two now dominant markets: vehicle/passenger ferries and cruise ships. Materials and methods: Long-term trends since 1900 in passenger and crew deaths on UK seagoing pas- senger ships that have sustained a maritime accident, as defined by Lloyds Register, have been collated and analysed. Results: Over the course of the 20th century, there has been a continuous fall in the number of incidents and in their severity. This may be a reflection of improved vessel safety, however the scale and nature of UK passenger shipping has also changed markedly over the period. Conclusions: In addition to the reducing frequency of deaths it is apparent that the majority of fatalities in both crew and passengers came from a very small number of major events during the study period. -

ISBN: 978-1-921291-50-0 Foreword Severe storms can cause dramatic changes to the coast and devastation to our settlements. If we look back through history, to the first European observations by James Cook and Joseph Banks on Endeavour in 1770, we can improve our understanding of the nature of storms and indeed climate on the east coast. In times of climate change, it is essential that we understand natural climate variability that occurs in Australia. Looking back as far as we can is essential to understand how climate is likely to behave in the future. Studying coastal climate through this chronology is one element of the process. Analysis of the records has already given an indication that east coast climate fluctuates between phases of storminess and drought that can last for decades. Although records are fragmentary and not suitable for statistical analysis, patterns and climate theory can be derived. The dependence on shipping for transport and goods since European settlement ensures a good source of information on storms that gradually improves over time. -

REPTILES FROM THE ISLANDS OF TASMANIA R.H. Green and J.L. Rainbird June 1993 TECHNICAL REPORT 1993/1 QUEEN VICTORIA MUSEUM AND ART GALLERY LAUNCESTON Reptiles from the islands of Tasmania by R.H. Green and J.L. Rainbird Queen VICtoria Museum, Launceston ABSTRACT Records of lizards and snakes from 110 islands within the pOlitical boundaries of Tasmania are summarised. Dates, literature, references and materials collected are given, together with some comments on numerical status and breeding conditions. INTRODUCTION Very little has been published on the distribution of reptiles which occur on the smaller islands around Tasmania. MacKay (1955) gave some notes on a collection of reptiles from the Furneaux Islands. Rawlinson (1967) listed and discussed records of 13 species from the Furneaux Group and 10 species from King Island. Green (1969) recorded 12 species from Flinders Island and Mt Chappell Island and Green and McGarvie (1971) recorded 9 spedes from King Island following fauna surveys In both locations. Rawlinson (1974) listed 15 species as occurring on the Tasmanian mainland, 12 on islands in the Furneaux Group and 9 on King Island. Hutchinson et al. (1989) gave some known populations of Pseudemoia pretiosa on islands off the southern coast, and haphazard and opportunistic collecting has produced occasional records from various small islands over the years. In 1984 Nigel Brothers, a field biologist with the Tasmanian Department of Environment and Parks, Wildlife and Heritage, commenced a programme designed to gain a greater knowledge of the small and uninhabited isrands around Tasmania. The survey Involved landing on rocks and small islands which might support vegetation and fauna and to record observations and collect specimens.
