Secretary’s Report 2020 We also need to grow our number of volunteers so that not so much falls on so few. We need to continue to grow our membership, with both playing and non-playing members. What started out as a difficult year just got worse. We need to grow our sponsorship base – and we need to support our sponsors as they support us. Before pre-season was fully up and running, both our League and Colts Coaches were offered an opportunity they couldn’t refuse at – and ended up as the Coach and Assistant Coach of the undefeated As Committee Members, whilst we look and plan for 2021 - we also need to look well beyond that short time 2020 WAFL Reserve Premiers. period.

Paul Clements came back as Reserves Coach, Brad Thomasz came in as Woman’s Coach, Steve ‘Plugger’ Davies took on the Thirds role; and Josh Hall and Liam Stevens offered to step in as co-Coaches of the Colts team. Council are developing plans for the oval and have sought input from the Club.

Then came COVID-19 and everything juddered to a halt. This is very much a work in progress and things should become clearer over the next several months.

As time went by, the chances of getting a shortened season underway improved, and although we were unable to We need to work hand in glove with Council as we rewrite our 5 and 10 year plans, with things such as a regenerate the Colts team, off we went into a reduced season with high hopes. redevelopment of current facilities under consideration.

Premiership defeating a previously unbeaten Kalamunda just as the final siren sounded. May you all have a peaceful and happy Christmas/New Year break – see you all back in January. Things looked difficult financially too at the outset, but with the support of the State Government, , the City of Gosnells, our Coaches, our members, our volunteers and our sponsors, everything came out ahead of track. Brian Pettitt The government subsidised electricity, the League cut nomination fees (and provided two grants), the City waived Secretary ground rent (and froze rates and lease fees), our Coaches took a pay cut (as did Field Umpires), all our sponsors re- committed and the support from members and volunteers was magnificent.

We were also helped considerably by the League who decided to conduct Grand Finals on closed grounds – and allocated us two sets to run. Once again, our Members and volunteers came forward with offers of assistance and we had two really successful days.

Our ground and facilities are the envy of many other Clubs, and I take this opportunity to acknowledge and thank the City of Gosnells and their Staff for the huge amount of work they put both during the season and in the remainder of the year.

I would also like to acknowledge the large number of volunteers who work both in front of and behind the scenes to make this Club function. These kind of people are the heart and soul of any Club and without them, we wouldn’t have a Club.

Most people are unaware that the Club works almost every day for 51 weeks of the year (we try and have a break between Christmas and New Year) and whether it’s before, during or after the season, the work doesn’t stop – it doesn’t even slow down.

And now to 2021.

Number one priority is getting our Colts team back up and going - and we need to continue to support our affiliated Junior Clubs because (if nothing else) that’s where the Colts (and Woman’s players) of the future will come from – and it’s where your kids are going to play!!!! 10 11 This year, the Club also had a drive on Social Membership, with 25 Social Members signing up. Treasurer’s Report 2020 Unfortunately, due to COVID-19, the Club lost three major sponsors this year. The 2020 football season, was very different in every aspect for everybody involved in football.

I was invited by the club to be the Senior Coach for the 2020 season late in 2019. Our initial focus was on interviewing and appointing the other coaching positions, Colts, Reserves, Thirds and Women’s team.

We commenced pre-season training early January, with no idea that Covid19 was about to turn everything upside down.

Pre-season training numbers were down throughout the early part of the season and was a concern for myself and the committee. It was clear that there is an attitude amongst the players that they don’t want to or need to do pre-season training, and they would still get a game due to the lack of numbers. This unfortunately is the wrong attitude and needs to be rectified going forward for the club to have success at the top end.

There was a core group of players that attended regular preseason training, but the rest of the playing group attended spasmodically at best, and some not at all, despite the efforts of the Coaches and some players.

Covid19 came and put a halt to all training and put a lot of uncertainty as to whether we would play at all.

Once we got the go ahead to proceed with a modified season, myself and the committee agreed that due to poor LEAGUE Back row – Brad Thomasz (Runner) Lisa Spicer (Trainer) Conor Roche, Joshua Hall (Co Captain), Brandyn Luckens, Michael McCaughan (Club President) numbers of Colts, we would not be able to field a Colts side. Every effort needs to be made next year to get a Colts Third row – Rhys Sparks (Trainer), Eathan Strahan, Cain Willing, Scott Lewis, Cody Staines, Alex Taylor, Jye Clements team back up and running. It will be vital for the club moving forward. Second row – Dean Stauborg, Ryan Davies, Gary Carruthers (Team Coach) Drew Robinson, Levi Gallagher, Mitchell Withers Front row – Adam White, Tim Hale, Eric Mitchell, Caleb Goodhew (Team Co Captain) Coree Thomson, Michael Vidich, Michael Cohen Once we had the go ahead to train and play, given the short lead in time, I made the decision to work on game structure, as opposed to additional fitness, and put the onus on the players to improve their fitness outside of the training programmes. This clearly did not work, as the majority of players did very little to improve or maintain their fitness during the Covid training ban period. I accept full responsibility for this. It was evident throughout the season, that we were not fit enough to play out full games.

I believe that I was not able to get the best out of the playing group, which resulted in the poor performance of the league team. In addition to this, I believe that some players are only interested in their own performance, and don’t have the best interests of the team or the club, this needs to change for the club to improve. This area I was unable to change, and again accept responsibility for.

In general, I believe that the playing list at the club is strong enough to be successful at the current level, and with some additional key players, has the ability to strive to B Division. But if the players don’t want to play at that level, it will certainly affect the results.

It would be remiss of me not to mention the Ladies team, I found them to hold many of the values that will see them have better success going forward. The results of the season does in no way reflect the efforts of the women who played. They showed great courage, tenacity, spirit and dedication week in week out, when the results clearly showed that they were outclassed, however their never give in attitude should be an inspiration for all at the club. Some could learn a great deal from the ladies. I hope that both the men’s and women’s teams become closer together moving forward.

I would like to thank the President and committee, the Coaches for the opportunity, and wish the club all the best for the upcoming season.

Gary Carruthers 16 17 Reserves Coach Report 2020

Well boys what a year, short and sweet is one word for it. No sooner had we started and we were done covid, what more can i say.

It wasn’t easy putting a side together under uncertain times. We started Preseason training and it was also short lived.

Several weeks went by and training eventually restarted and the season was back on, only being 9 games it was important to get off to a good start to the season and we did with a couple of wins under our belt it was just the start we wanted.

The feeling was good within the group we had a lot of new faces in the team, training was up and down but the energy was good. We had some good wins and some narrow losses some of those loses we dominated the game and should have won, playing 4 quarters makes a big difference when we did were hard to beat, as the season went on we started to jell as a team training also improved as i said throughout the season ( We Play As We Train ).

RESERVES Back row – Michael McCaughan (Club President), Jye Clements, Nathan Hansen, Wade Goodhew, Taylor Millsteed, Travis Sansom (Vice Captain), Mitchell Withers, To only play 9 game’s in a season some of those narrow loses cost us towards the end of the season, to have more Jaxon Millsteed, Arnold Punch, Jeff Stevens (Team Manager) wins than loses and to only just miss out on playing finals. I believe we had a successful season well done boys, if Centre row – Lisa Spicer (Trainer) Daniel Spicer (trainer) Rhys Sparks (Trainer) Zac McDonald, Matthew Hopewell, Vincent Fraser, Sean Spicer, Christian Agostino, only we could have played a full season I think we would have learnt from our mistakes. Nelson Landwehr, Jo Stevens (Water Runner) Front Row – Dennis Luffman, Wade Gallagher, Thomas Betts, Xavier Dhurrkay, Paul Clements (Team Coach) Raymond Shaw, Mark Indich, Solomon Slater, Jack Collard, Chilton Yarran The leadership group were fantastic throughout the season lead by Brayden Watkins both on and off the field thanks boy’s, your support was much appreciated.

Our awards night was a bit different this year being held at the club and a good night was had by all. A big thank you must go out to Karen and the committee for the time and effort but into organizing the night.

To all our award winners Chilton Yarran, Tom Betts and Dennis Luffman well done boy’s and well deserved. Plugger thanks for your help all season I think our training sessions were inspirational, you GF coach, also Gary thanks for your help throughout the season much appreciated.

Thanks to all my helpers this year a special thanks to Kylie our team manager and to Jeff Assistant Coach thanks for all your help you guy’s are awesome both on and off the field.

As a group we did our best in a very short season, looking forward to next year. Remember boys “if you can’t outplay them, out work them “.

That day just brought home how special our club is and the great people that have been involved over the years and to see so many of them there to join in the celebrations was a real highlight of a great day. The Thirds side this year was mainly made up of a lot of players who had contributed so many years of great service to our footy club and it was incredible to share with them getting the ultimate reward for their efforts .I hope that in the future more players at our club get a chance to win a flag because we have so many talented and committed players in all grades and they make our club great. The best thing about the Thirds was the even spread of talent we had and the unselfish nature of the group and to them winning games were considered far more important than winning awards. But I do have to say well done to the boys who won the trophies they were really well deserved and I reckon justified rewards for great seasons. The league side under Gary did it tough but we’ve been in this situation before and bounced back and we all have tremendous faith in the attitude of the playing group to turn things around. Paul did a great job with the Ressies and in any other year a positive win/loss record would get you into the finals. Again like the League side this team was filled with a team of players who are really good club men, and I’m sure under the new coach in 2021 they will have a successful year. The Womens team were constantly challenged throughout the year but they did stick together in trying times and like the League team can be expected to improve in a more suitable grade. Off the field I continue to be impressed by the capacity of the committee and volunteers to keep our club going it’s a tough gig, but with a few fantastic additions to the committee in 2021 it can only be a good thing and ensures the club will be strong in 2021. Finally I would like to give a big thank you to Sticks and Steely for all the work they have put in not just this year but over the years and it was a great way for us to finish. Looking forward to seeing everyone in 2021. PLUGGER

Absolute fabulous day and a credit to “everybody” involved in making it such a memorable event. Special thanks to you (KW) and Bob for your efforts from day one. It was far bigger and better than I imagined. Bloody good job you guys. A special vote of thanks to all those responsible for putting on such a good spread. Petra and I thoroughly enjoyed the day as did all those who attended I’m sure. It was great catching up with all the past players after such a long time”.

It was great to toss the coin especially with Ryan Davies playing his 300th game. The last time I saw him was when I coached his dad at Whitfords back in 1983 when I coached them to runners – up in the B Grade Grand Final against Carlisle. I think Ryan was about 3-4 yrs old then. Nice catching up with his dad again.

Once again many thanks and wishing the club all the best for the rest of the season and stay safe”.

GOSNELLS HAWKS THIRDS HOME IN A GRAND FINAL THRILLER

The Gosnells Hawks Football Club Thirds came from a seemingly hopeless position at half time to snatch victory by three points on the final siren in the E4 Division of the Perth Football League’s Grand Final last Saturday when Russell Fuller marked and kicked accurately from 30 metres to put the Hawks in front for the first time against an undefeated Kalamunda. Similarities between this game and the last premiership won by the club in 2009 is that the league team coached by Jeff Chapman also recorded victory over an undefeated Kalamunda on the same oval but in the third period of extra time. Kalamunda started the game strongly to lead 5 goals 6 behinds (36) to Gosnells 1 behind (1) at half time. Club Stalwart Ron Heelan

Ron began his service back in 2006 as the clubs head Trainer.

He continued on as the clubs head trainer for seasons 2007, 2008, 2009, & 2010.

Ron had a spell for a few years but resumed his duties as a trainer for the club in 2014, 2015 & 2016.

2012 & 2016 he received Certificates of Appreciation for services rendered.

Ron assists the club on home games by doing the necessary work that is required by the Perth Football League SHOP LOCAL to ensure the ground is in good order for the commencement of games.

Eg: Putting the padding on the Goal & Point posts, erecting the canopies for both the club & opposition Coaches & Players comfort. And he does any other jobs that are required for game day.

Ron has been the club cleaner for a few years. You can always see the social centre and bar areas thoroughly cleaned after Ron has been present. In the Covid19 year, Ron cleaned the Social Premises voluntarily at no expense to the Club. This action taken by Ron was extremely kind of him.

Ron your service to the Gosnells Football Club is certainly appreciated
