Three candidates will be elected by the community in an upcoming election. Congratulations to the candidates, and thank you to all who applied to be candidates. With respect to the search for a new General Manager/Chief Operating Officer, the search committee interviewed three executive search firms in August. It recommended to the Board that Management Matters, LLC be retained. The Board approved a contract with the company to assist it in its search. Management Matters has extensive experience in handling general manager searches for planned communities such as ours. The company is already familiar with our operations and staff since it has been assisting the Board and staff in the preparation of a new Strategic Plan. Its knowledge will prove invaluable as we move forward.

Due to the increase in COVID-19 cases, the Working Neighbors Drop-in Sessions for the remainder of 2021 have been canceled. If you would like to discuss a specific subject with the Board, please email Kimberly McDowell ([email protected]) to schedule a call or virtual meeting.

Twenty-two golf carts were inspected, and only minor equipment issues were noted. As a reminder, we have several streets dedicated as “Golf Cart-Free Zones.” I received a few requests to bring attention to a couple of streets where this rule is violated often. One such area is the bridge on Westcross Road over Green Island Road and Lake Street. The bridge over Westcross Road has a very distinct, dedicated lane marked by a cement divider. You cannot miss it, so please cross the bridge in this dedicated lane. We strongly encourage golf cart drivers to use the community paths whenever available. Please refer to page 29 of the 2021 Landings Residential Directory for a complete list of Cart-Free zones. The Appeals process can be found on page 51 of the Landings Residential Directory for PPMS violations or online (www.landings.org > Architectural Documents). Appeals are time-sensitive and must be filed within 10 days of the notice of violation. At the end of the day, it came down to this (at least for me): Does wearing a mask hurt me? Sure, it’s inconvenient. But does it increase my risk of catching COVID-19? In my opinion, I don’t believe so. Therefore, even having been vaccinated, I continue to practice wearing a mask. I also practice social distancing, checking my temperature daily, frequent hand washing, and keeping my immune system at its best. I know all the misinformation and information can be difficult, if not impossible, to decipher, but do your research, check with your trusted physician(s), and, as mentioned, use a good dose of common sense. Plan now since this is the time you really can see what needs work, while everything is in full bloom, and you can contract with a tree company. We have a very impressive variety of birds and wildlife on our island because of the availability of desirable habitat for them. Live trees, dead trees, and branches provide food and shelter for birds and wildlife year-round. It’s important to keep a portion of our property natural so that wildlife have cover and can root for seeds and insects. You may have noticed birds shuffling and pecking at the ground. There is a ground smorgasbord of different stages of bug life, seeds, berries, acorns, etc., for wildlife to feed on. It also is costly to remove, replant, water, and maintain manicured areas. Of course, you may want to tidy up areas, and every seedling cannot grow into a tree. By being a gardening neatnik, over cleaning and spraying, you won’t see many birds. It is equally important to avoid broadcasting garden chemicals in such feeding grounds (which also goes into our water system). The effects of such chemicals are cumulative, and we should avoid feeding wildlife such Photo By Patty Frothingham additives, as much as we avoid consuming them ourselves. From time to time, some of these chemicals, which are thought to be safe, are taken off the market. As you know, the growth in our area is tremendous. Without some maintenance, we wouldn’t be able to get through the gates and drive around our beautiful island. While you are inspecting your property, be sure to check for invasive Chinese Tallow Trees. This very invasive tree thrives in all habitats and is very prolific. If you look for little heart-shaped leaves popping out of the ground, I guarantee you’ll find many to pull. This means there possibly is a nearby Tallow Tree. As these Tallow Trees lose their leaves in the fall, their beautiful yellow/orange leaves stand out and are easy to spot. Good birding, and keep the island safe for wildlife and for us.

To help demystify the silent world of these slithering reptiles, Skidaway Audubon is hosting an informative program to educate residents. Mary Lynn Seremet, a local herpetologist, will be Audubon’s guest speaker on September 30, at 4 p.m. at Skidaway Island United Methodist Church in Bailey Hall. Her topic, Oh for Goodness Snakes, will cover the types of snakes found in this region, their habits and role in our ecosystem, and what to do if you or your pet encounters a snake. Only Ireland, New Zealand, Hawaii, Greenland, Iceland, Antarctica, and other smaller islands have no snakes. So get to know these unique reptiles that have inhabited the earth for millions and millions of years. The event is free to current members of Friends of Skidaway Audubon (FOSA) and $5 per person for all others. No preregistration is required. Skidaway Audubon’s mission is to promote environmental awareness and stewardship. In addition to hosting educational events, Skidaway Audubon maintains the largest network of bluebird houses in the Southeast, the largest Diamondback Terrapin rescue project in the Southeast, a state-of-the-art bird cam, an invasive tree removal program, bat houses to reduce mosquito populations, gardens to sustain pollinators, and weather stations to promote water-saving irrigation practices. Conservation Corner: Showing Nature Some Love By Lynn Lewis - [email protected] Communications Manager It’s no secret that the modern American spends less time outdoors than those of generations past, but I encourage you to grab your favorite hat and some sun repellant and get back out there! Did you know that a mere 20 minutes of time spent outdoors has been shown to improve cognitive function? The next time you feel that 3 p.m. slump, head outside for a few minutes. You do not even have to be active. Sitting outside without any technological distractions (yes, that means leaving the cell phone inside!) has been proven to help you stay focused and better remember details. Similarly, when we are ill or injured, being in a room with a view of outdoor trees or plants has been shown to help patients recover more quickly and use less medication. Corn snakes, like the one shown above, are primarily nocturnal Showing nature some much- during the warm, summer months. They are harmless, deserved love doesn’t mean you give unless you’re a rat or a mouse! up all your modern conveniences, nor do you have to have a green thumb or hug a tree. Although if you want to hug a tree, I promise not to judge. It simply means taking some time to appreciate nature’s impact and presence in your life, even the ways in which you may not be aware. 22 • The Landings Journal • September 2021
