My journey in magic started really late for me and I only got interested in magic around 6 years ago. A late bloomer so they say. I learnt a ton of magic to begin with and like all of you was sucked into the world of amazement. For me though, the best part was being able to share a small miracle with the people around me. It was not a power trip, more a sense that I was able to present a little wonder, so if I ever could not connect with another person, id have the perfect ice breaker. • Emotional Reactions to Some Illusions in Show Magic: an Exploratory Study
IPRPD International Journal of Arts, Humanities & Social Science ISSN 2693-2547 (Print), 2693-2555 (Online) Volume 01; Issue no 04: September 10, 2020 Emotional Reactions to some Illusions in Show Magic: An Exploratory Study Pascal Morchain 1 Clémentine Tranchet2 1 LP3C, Psychology Department, Rennes 2 University, France, Email: [email protected] 2 Psychology Department, Rennes 2 University, France, Email: [email protected] Received: 22/06/2020 Accepted for Publication: 31/08/2020 Published: 10/09/2020 Abstract The basis of this article is a conference presented in Marseille on April, 2nd, 2019, for the MUCEM (MUsée des Civilisations de l'Europe et de la Méditerranée / MUseum of European and Mediterranean Civilizations). This paper presents a exploratory study conducted in Rennes (France), about emotions evoked by three stage illusions presented in show magic: (1) “Sawing in half” illusion, (2) “Escaping a straitjacket” illusion, (3) “Harrow” illusion. Results of a free association task show that the chosen illusions are perceived to produce different emotions, but mainly the negative ones. Results reveal, too, that the illusions evoked are differently evaluated on their perceived attractiveness and their perceived danger. Results show a link between the illusions, the perception of danger, and the fascination they generate. Propositions for future research are formulated, at different levels of analysis: individual and psychosocial. Keywords: Emotions, Show magic, Illusions, Social psychology Preliminary remarks In January 2019, I was contacted by French philosopher Jacques Serrano to give a conference for the MUCEM about the « Fascination for magic tricks that involve an imminent death ». Well, I was not convinced that all spectators were fascinated in the same way by different illusions, nor that this fascination were linked to an apparent imminent death.

Wednesday Wizardry, a new series of weekly shows featuring local and visiting pros, had found an audience and tonight the 90-seat theater was nearly full. One of the performers, Barry Wood, hav- ing worked in the first half, knew it was a great audience. But he also grinned to himself, thinking, “They ain’t seen nothin’ yet.” The closing act was Bob Sheets and, slipping qui- etly into the back seat, Barry was about to watch the Card Stab for the zillionth time. But tonight was different. For some rea- son, Sheets was in a nostalgic mood. “Where’s Bullwinkle?” shouted the blindfolded, knife- wielding, crazy man behind the table full of scattered cards. Barry smiled. “My mind instantly flashed back to the early 1980s,” Wood says. “I was sitting in the Brooke Farm Inn of Magic in Chevy Chase, Maryland, with my friend Bob Kohler, watch- ing the audience collectively gasp in amaze- ment at the sight of the selected card impaled on the knife. That was my introduction to the art of comedy magic.

Master Craftsmen Of SME We were excited to host our first ever “Magic Crafters Wood Crafters Pow Wow!” A meeting of the minds with some of the best builders of magical apparatus in the art. All of this, of course, is with you in mind. The mission—lead by Bill Trotter (SME Curator and Antique Director), to come up with a list of products that each maker can produce that will be forthcoming and available at Stevens Magic Emporium. Then the challenge is to negotiate with the makers—who is going to build what. Not an easy task for guys that love a challenge or perhaps have an affinity for a particular piece or style. A special thanks to Bill Trotter for his valued contribution as a member of our team. Bill has a better knowledge of Joe’s Collection than— well even Joe! So he was able to zero in on some antique pieces that would still be relevant and of interest for our customers. In attendance, using the front cover to locate the positions were: Back Row: Gimpy (Steve Corbett) - Michael Baker - George Ledo Front Row: Louie Gaynor and Joe Stevens A special thanks to all of these guys who flew in for this 3-day session at Stevens Magic Emporium. Those who impacted the art in America We begin a year-long review of significant people on the American panorama of magic during the 100-year period known as the 20th century. It is by no means a chronology' of the successes. failures, or the evolution of the craft within this time frame. Instead. it is a month-to-month enumeration of those people who - in some eventful or consequential way - have influenced. shaped. or impacted the performing art of magic in the United States of America. Embodied will be the celebrities as well as the amateur. trailblazers and stvle-setters. teachers and artisans. the inventive. the literate. and the legendary. as well as an eccentric or two. Certain contemporaries have had insuffient years to assert their influence. therefore. they will not likely appear. Each month. ten or so of magic’s significant will be saluted. There will be no ranking of the file as each cadre proudly passes in review. As the year’s end nears. and when the procession of 100 reaches its culmination. top honors and decorations will be bestowed. Our readers will be invited to select the //e plus ultra of those who most impacted the art in this century. It has been written that the history of the 20th Century actually begins in the 1870s, with the advent of the Technological Revolution. If true, it’s conceivable that Modern Magic, first published as a volume in 1876, is prologue to magic literature of the 1900s. The first edition of 2,000 copies of Modern Magic sold out in Great Britain within six weeks.

After the Prestige: A Postmodern Analysis of Penn and Teller Elizabeth L. Miller & Joseph P. Zompetti Liz Miller is a third year PhD student in the department of communication studies at the University of Kansas. She received her Masters at Illinois State University and her Bachelor's at Miami University. Her main research interests lie at the nexus between the rhetoric of science and the rhetoric of Islam. Joseph P. Zompetti (Ph.D., Wayne State) is Professor in the School of Communication at Illinois State University. His research interests include the rhetoric of magic, political communication, rhetorical theory and argumentation. He has published extensively in journals such as the Western Journal of Communication, Culture Theory & Critique, and Argumentation. ABSTRACT By mocking the magic community and revealing the secret behind some of their tricks, Penn and Teller perform a kind of parodic and post-modern “anti-magic.” Penn and Teller display an artful use of rhetoric; in exposing the secrets and shortcomings of conjuring, they are revolutionizing the way people think about both the art of magic and the magic community. Individuals such as Penn and Teller may use parody to subvert the hegemonic interpretations. However, we also know that it is difficult to bring down a system while operating within that system. Thus, this article explores the way Penn and Teller are challenging the metanarrative of the magic community, using several of the duo’s more popular illusions as examples for analysis. Ultimately, this paper should help us gain a better understanding of the way parody can be used to challenge hegemonic conceptions, and the limitations of this type of rhetorical approach.

Ultimately, my collection has achieved its purpose - to provide me with thirty years of satisfaction, teach me about the history of an art I love, introduce me to a T host of new close friends, and, in the end, help with my family’s long-term financial security. There are dozens of people who helped develop my early fascination with magic’s history and the collecting of its relics, and for that I thank them all. I hesitate to name those who influenced me – the list would be a long one! - as I will undoubtedly leave someone out, but I’d be remiss without naming a few: Harold Puff for starting it all, and his close friend Ken Klosterman for creating a road map to what my dream could be. Terry Harris for being my friend and mentor.
