Athens Journal of Mediterranean Studies- Volume 3, Issue 3 – Pages 251-266 The Oceanographic Achievements of Vito Volterra in Italy and Abroad1 By Sandra Linguerri The aim of this paper is to introduce Vito Volterra’s activity as a policy maker in the field of oceanography. In 1908, he was the promoter of the Thalassographic Committee (then in 1910 Royal Italian Thalassographic Committee), a national endeavor for marine research vis-à-vis the industrial world of fisheries, which soon internationalized. Abroad it was affiliated with the International Commission for the Scientific Exploration of the Mediterranean Sea, led by Albert I, Prince of Monaco (1919-1922) and then by Vito Volterra himself (1923-1928).1 Keywords: History, International Commission for the Scientific Exploration of the Mediterranean Sea, Oceanography, Royal Italian Thalassographic Committee, Vito Volterra. Vito Volterra and the Royal Italian Thalassographic Committee Vito Volterra (1860-1940) (Goodstein 2007, Guerraggio and Paoloni 2013, Simili and Paoloni 2008) is generally considered one of the greatest mathematicians of his time. His most important contributions were in functional analysis, mathematical ph‟ scientific activities, rather it will focus on his contribution to talassographic (or oceanographic) studies, and especially on the creation of the Royal Italian Talassographic Committee (Linguerri 2005, Ead 2014). In 1900, after teaching in Pisa and Turin, Volterra was offered a chair in mathematical physics at the University of Rome, where he was invited to give the inaugural lecture for the new academic year entitled Sui tentativi di applicazione delle matematiche alle scienze biologiche e sociali (On the attempts to apply mathematics to the biological and social sciences), which demonstrated his great interest in the application of mathematics to biological sciences and to economic research. -

Er wurde 1887 Privatdozent und unternahm Reisen in das Baltikum und auf den Bismarck-Archipel und war 1889 Teilnehmer der Plankton-Expedition der Alexander-von-Humboldt-Stiftung. Er hat viele zoologische Gruppen, bevorzugt jedoch Spinnen untersucht. Sein Interesse galt der Biogeographie. Im Jahr 1903 wurde er zum Mitglied der Gelehrtenakademie Leopoldina gewählt. Er heiratete am 19. Juni 1899 Maria Dahl (1872–1972), die ebenfalls am Institut für Zoologie in Kiel arbeitete und auch mehrere Arbeiten über Spinnen publiziert hat. As the archivist and historian of the Stazione, Dr Groeben has been completely dedicated to preserving the rich documentary materials of the Stazione and facilitating scholars in their researches. Her knowledge and enthusiasm for this happy task has generated many lastinG friendships. She has also contributed very materially to the world of scholarship, especially on the life of Anton Dohrn and the correspondence networks that held together the scientific men of the 19th century. -

Kowalevsky Medal. This article announces the winners of the first medals and briefly reviews the achievements of A.O. Kowalevsky, the Russian comparative embryologist whose studies on amphioxus, tunicates and germ layer homologies pioneered evolutionary embryology and confirmed the evolutionary continuity between invertebrates and vertebrates. In re-establishing this international award, the Society is pleased to recognize both the present awardees and the memory of Kowalevsky, whose work pointed to that we now call evolutionary developmental biology. -

On Water 13 Franziska Torma Snakey Waters, or: How Marine Biology Structured Global Environmen- tal Sciences In the year 1902 an encounter of the monstrous kind aroused the attention of the German Kaiser. The Daily Chronicle announced the sighting of a giant “Sea Serpent off the Australian Coast.” In the article, the steamboat captain who had discovered the creature provided a detailed eyewitness account: On the passage from Port Pirie to Sydney, when off Ram Head, a monster serpent was seen by several members of the crew. Closer inspection proved it to be an immense serpent of, as far as could be judged, from 30ft. to 35 ft., with four dorsal fins about 6 ft. apart, standing about 4ft. or 5ft. high. The head resembled that of a seal, only it was much larger, being about 2ft. in diameter. It was seen by myself, the second officer, and several others. All agree that it resembled the serpent seen by those on board the Princess, illustrated in the Strand Magazine, the only visible difference being the fins, which seemed more angular than those in the Magazine. -

Currently, he is a doctoral student in the Rachel Carson Center for Environment and Society’s (RCC) doctoral program, “Environ- ment and Society.” Eleanor Ruth Hayman graduated from the University of Central Lancashire with a MA in environmental ethics and is currently pursuing her PhD. She served as a research associate at the RCC from 2010–2011. Julia Herzberg completed her PhD on autobiographical texts of peasants in Tsarist and Soviet Russia at Bielefeld University in 2011. She has been working at the RCC as a re- search fellow since 2009. Agnes Kneitz completed her MA in modern and contemporary German history at LMU Munich in 2009. She is as a research associate at the RCC, where she is also a candidate in the doctoral program with a dissertation entitled Eco-Novels: The Concept of Environ- mental Justice through Nineteenth-Century Social Novels. Marc Landry received his MA in German and European studies from Georgetown Univer- sity, Washington DC, where he is currently finishing his PhD in history. He was a visiting fellow at the RCC from October 2010 to July 2011. Felix Mauch studied modern history and cultural geography at the University of Freiburg, Germany. He currently is pursuing his PhD in the RCC doctoral program and works for the Center as a content developer for the Environment & Society Portal. -
