Third Country Training Programme

Closing Ceremony of this programme was held on 01st December 2006, at the Hotel Mahaweli Reach, , to award the certificates to the foreign and local participants who have successfully completed the training programme. Faculty of Engineering

Two Engineering Faculty Students won the Manamperi Award

Ms. E.A.U.C.E. Kumari and Ms. I.G.W.D.R. Upasena, two Final year Chemical and Process Engineering students of the Faculty of Engineering, were the winners of the Manaperi Award for the year 2006 for their undergraduate project titled “Comparison of Statistical Texture Measures for Classifying Rice Samples Using Computer Vision”. This undergraduate Project was supervised by Dr. M.R. Chandraratne of the Department of Chemical and Process Engineering.

Sri Lanka Association for the Advancement of Science (SLAAS) awards the Manaperi Award annually. This award goes for the best student who carries out Engineering Research Project at a Faculty of Engineering in a Sri Lankan University.

Postgraduate Program at the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering

The Postgraduate Program of the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering offers an excellent opportunity for the students to explore the field and to become well qualified and knowledgeable persons in their field of study. Currently 17 PhD holders are in the permanent teaching panel of the program. Doctor of Philosophy, Master of Philosophy, Master of Science of Engineering and Postgraduate Diploma are the main divisions of qualifications offered. There are four major areas of specialization, they are: (i) Communication and Information Engineering, (ii) Electronics and Instrumentation Engineering, (iii) Robotics and Automation Engineering and (iv) Power High Voltage and Energy Systems Engineering.

There are altogether 70 students following postgraduate degree programs in the Department. Recently 10 students were graduated. Many of the graduates have been employed at higher administrative positions in many esteemed establishments in Sri Lanka and abroad. The newly started fifth batch, with 28 students, on 10th November 2006 has shown the growing demand on the postgraduate education at the Department.

Inauguration of EPCEng Postgraduate Programme

Postgraduate programmes in Environmental Pollution Control Engineering (EPCEng) offered by the Department of Chemical and Process Engineering of the University of Peradeniya was inaugurated on 10th November, 2006 at the EOE Pereira Theatre, Faculty of Engineering. Eleven (11) graduate students from different engineering science disciplines were enrolled in this 3rd batch of the postgraduate programme which leads to offer postgraduate diploma (PGDip), M.Sc. M.Sc.Eng. and M.Phil. degrees.

Training Programmes

There had been two service training programmes successfully held in the Skills Laboratory of Faculty of Medicine, organized by the CePELS – Central Province, Paediatrics Emergencies & Life support group.

1. First training programme - 28th to 30th November 2006 2. Second training programme - 12th to 14th December 2006

The participants were the Medical Officers of the Central Province. These were extremely important inservice training programmes where the medical officers were further trained to handle paediatrics emergencies. The resource members were Consultant Anaesthetists & Consultant Paediatricians from the Faculty of Medicine, Teaching Hospitals Peradeniya & Kandy and other provincial hospitals of Central Province.

• Dr. P.G.A.Pushpakumara participated a meeting of the International Atomic Energy Agency in Edinburgh, U.K. as a Chief Scientific Officer. He also visited the Royal Veterinary College, London.

• Prof. P. Abeynayake, Dean of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine & Animal Science, attended the IAEA final Research Coordination meeting in Munich, Germany. The objective of this assignment is to improve the residence monitoring capacity in order to assure the quality of food commodities.

• Prof. P. Abeynayake, Dean of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine & Animal Science, undertook scientific visits to Netherlands and Denmark as a part of the Technical Co-operation Project (TCP) by International Atomic Agency, Vienna, Austria. The objective of this visit is to observe the activities of Food Microbiology and Residue monitoring laboratories in order to prepare for accreditation under ISO 17025.

Mr. Nirmal Bengani made a demonstration on e-journals available through iGroup (India) to the students and staff of the Medical Faculty on 4 October.

He made a similar presentation to the Senior Librarians of the Sri Lanka Library Consortia on 5 October in the Seminar Room Main Library University of Colombo.

• Visit by Softlink Asia (Pvt) Ltd.

Softlink Asia supplier of ALICE, the library software used by the UP Library Network, paid a visit to offer training and assisting in activating the circulation module. The training of staff was done from 15 to 20 November and professional assistance also was given to the staff in the Vet. Medical Science Library during the visit.

• Workshop on Quality Assurance for University Librarians.

University Grants Commission in collaboration with the Quality Assurance and Accreditation Council conducted a One-Day Workshop on “Quality Assurance in Libraries of Sri Lankan Universities” on 16 December 2006 at the Sri Lanka Foundation Institute. Mrs. Sriyani Ileperuma and Mr. Harrison Perera participated as the nominees of UP Library Network. The workshop discussed the following areas identified as aspects for evaluation:
