    Masterson struggles in loss to A's Indians endure fourth straight road defeat in Oakland By Jane Lee / Special to MLB.com OAKLAND -- Both the Indians and A's entered Thursday's contest more than 15 games out of their respective division races. Both have endured losing streaks as long as five games this this season. Both are showering its rookies with countless opportunities. Essentially, both have transformed the field into a classroom. However, while the A's have recently watched their youth play a part in the spoiler role, the Indians have watched their work-in-progress group flounder toward the finish line. And, on Thursday, it showed. The Tribe managed just six hits off five Oakland pitchers while Cleveland starter Justin Masterson lasted just four frames en route to a 5-2 loss in the first of a four-game set against the A's, who are winners of nine of their past 11. Meanwhile, the Indians watched their current road trip record move to 0-4. Furthermore, they have lost 15 of their past 19 games -- basically erasing what was once a second-half rally. Aside from a two-run fifth inning, the offense failed to produce any type of rally on Thursday night. Trevor Crowe hit a run-scoring triple in that frame, which was capped off with an RBI ground out off the bat of Michael Brantley against A's starter Clayton Mortensen. The Oakland right-hander exited the game after that frame, but the A's relief corps kept the Indians lineup in check, scattering just two hits through four frames while closer Andrew Bailey picked up his 25th save of the season -- an ongoing record for Oakland rookies.

He goes after hitters and isn't afraid of giving up the home run ball. After delivering three fine starts upon joining the A's rotation, Tomko hit his first stumbling block in green and gold, as the Seattle Mariners teed off on the veteran right-hander in a 7-4 defeat of Oakland on Thursday before a sparse crowd of 10,297. Tomko gave up a pair of two-run homers in the first inning and served up one more in the fourth, as the A's fell to 3-10 this season against the Mariners, the team directly above them in the American League West standings. "Guys got on base, and I fell behind (on all three homers)," Tomko said. "When you fall behind guys and don't make a quality pitch, that's what's going to happen." Today, the A's will call up right-hander Clayton Mortensen from Triple-A Sacramento to start in place of Vin Mazzaro. Mazzaro was examined by a doctor and found to have some tendinitis in his right shoulder. Manager Bob Geren said it's possible Mazzaro may just be skipped for a turn to rest his shoulder. His next scheduled start is a week from today in Minnesota. "He hasn't bounced back start-to-start as well as we'd like," Geren said. Tomko found trouble immediately Thursday.

They have also picked up the options on infielder Kyle Haines and pitchers Scott Kelley and Phillip Bartleski. Hiscock, 24, has spent the past two seasons in the Tampa Bay Rays organization. After signing as a non-drafted free agent in 2010, he spent his time between Short-Season Hudson Valley and Class-A affiliate Bowling Green. He combined for a 4-5 record with a 4.47 ERA in 59 relief appearances. The 6-foot-2 right-hander is from Waterbury, Connecticut and played his college ball at Division II Rollins College, where he posted a 7-2 record with a 3.67 ERA as a senior. Haines, 29, returns for his second season with the RailCats after having an impressive 2011 season. The infielder hit .309 in 70 games and posted a .406 on-base percentage. The Lousiville, Illinois native played primarily shortstop, hitting one home run and knocking in 24 RBI. His 15 doubles tied a career high. Haines spent seven minor league seasons between the San Francisco Giants and Cleveland Indians organizations. He was drafted in the 31st round by the Giants in 2004 and dominated in his first assignment for the Arizona League Giants, hitting .339 and earning a quick call-up to Class-A Short-Season Salem-Keizer. Haines made it as high as Double-A with the Giants, being named an Eastern League Mid-Season All-Star for the Connecticut Defenders.

The Crooked Buffalo is a Pub Suite that holds up to 20 people and gets its unique name from a giant stuffed Buffalo head on the wall that is slightly tilted. All concession stands in the park received a facelift during the off-season and two new stands were added. The Character Clubhouse is a merchandise store for the team's mascot that allows fans the opportunity to purchase a Buster T. Bison or Belle The Ballpark Diva doll that can be accessorized. NAMING RIGHTS: In 1999, the Bisons agreed to an 8-year $2.5 M naming rights deal with Dunn Tire Corporation. The deal runs through the 2008 season.
