DR Congo Situation Report n° 6 – 13 February 2008 Earthquake in Great Lakes region

• 6.1 magnitude earthquake 20 km north of at 07H35 GMT on Sunday 3 Feb. (Continuous aftershocks since then). • 447 injured people treated and 7 deaths. • 2,518 families received assistance in Bukavu and surroundings. • 3,465 buildings have been damaged. • All emergency needs have been met.

Background An earthquake of magnitude 6.1 on the Richter scale struck the province of , in Eastern Democratic Republic of Congo on Sunday 3 February 2008 at 07H35 GMT (09H35

local time).

The epicentre of the earthquake lies approximately 20 km north of the provincial capital, Bukavu, in the locality of Katana (). Continuous aftershocks have been felt since then.

All emergency needs in NFI, food, health and shelter have been met.

Impact of the earthquake • 7 confirmed deaths. • 447 injured persons. • 56 health facilities have been damaged by the earthquake. • According to the provincial government, 1,087 houses have been completely destroyed. 2,077 houses and 301 public buildings suffered damages. In total, 3,465 buildings have been affected.

Needs/Response

1. Non-Food Items/Emergency Shelters/Food • 2,518 households received assistance in NFI kits. IRC, through Rapid Response Mechanism (RRM), in collaboration with UNHCR and its local partner ADSSE, distributed assistance to 1,026 households in Bukavu. ICRC assisted 1,492 households in Kabare and . • Tents from Brindisi UN Humanitarian Response Depot will be delivered at the end of this week to assist schools and health facilities damaged.

2. Health • WHO provided 20 medical supplies: 10 to HGR Bukavu, 4 to and 6 to HGR Kabare. • Some 40 injured persons are still in hospital.

3. Education • IRC/RRM started on Feb. 9 the building of 2 emergency schools in Bukavu.

4. Safety/Security • The restriction on non-essential UN missions to Bukavu was lifted on Feb. 11.

5. Coordination • An UNDAC team arrived yesterday in Bukavu to work with the Risk Management Unit of the Observatoire Volcanologique de Goma and OCHA in carrying out damage assessment of buildings and infrastructure as well as environmental assessments. The mission will last until Feb. 25.
