And while his recorded output always spans the gamut, he often returns to recurrent The first album themes, spread across the genres that serve as home base – or bases, as it were. 2010 will be an ambitious one for Madlib and Stones Throw Records, with his slate of 12 Medicine Show albums in Madlib’s and mixes, his rap albums for the likes of Strong Arm Steady, Guilty Simpson and MED and a series of albums based around the Yesterdays Universe now-defunct Yesterdays New Quintet’s “spin off bands” that he introduced on the Yesterdays Universe album. If you’ve read this far, deep-jazz series you’re probably aware of the former two categories, now on to the jazz. The first of Madlib’s 2010 jazz albums is Last Electro-Acoustic Space Jazz & Percussion Ensemble’s Miles Away. Within our capitalistic society, much if not all the music we consume is to be regarded as commodities. Musical products are subject to numerous processes, rules and regulations, one of which being copyright. Essentially, copyright enables the musical product as commodity, and as David Hesmondhalgh puts it, has become the main means of commodifying culture. A musical practice that is particularly at odds with copyright is sampling, which makes use of previously recorded material through recombination and re-contextualisation. For the use of samples, a proper copyright license must be in place, whether the sample-based song is being monetized on or released for free. However, hip hop producers often do not comply in licensing the use of copyrighted material in their music, which challenges not only the copyright regime, but also copyright as a means of commodification. Over the years, copyright has become an extensive set of rights, resulting in the criminalization of unlicensed use of samples, but not in prevention, as technological advancements have made sampling a more widespread and accessible practice. Within this thesis, the sample-based work of Madlib as released on his Madlib Invazion label is used as a case study to map the current copyright regime, the costs of licensing and the risks of unlicensed sampling.

To showcase this, this thesis presents a framework, broken up into three sections, that highlight the ways hip hop lyrics can be used to teach a variety of different literary devices, historical contexts, and how to analyze a text beyond its surface value. The three sections include Simple Literary Devices, Complex Literary Devices, and Contexts. Each section is demonstrated with a unique song and artists, to show how this framework could function as well as the versatility of talent in hip hop.
