Victor Hugo : The Man Who Laughs (Annotated) before purchasing it in order to gage whether or not it would be worth my time, and all praised The Man Who Laughs (Annotated):

His characters are always more complex than they appear to be on the surface. Gwynplaine, Dea, Ursus, and Homo represent different aspects of ourselves as well as society. The juxtaposition of these characters, and their interactions give the reader a lot to think about. The highly developed intellect of "Ursus" (Bear) in the appearance of a madman, "Homo" (Human) the wolf who is tame, Dea who is beauty itself, but blind to physical beauty, Gwynplaine who has a beautiful heart yet outwardly hideous; these "contradictions" create another layer of interest to this story.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Great story by segments...By LuisferGreat story by segments... I mean, there were some intercalated chapters providing very detailed descriptions of nobility titles and names of people who bare them that I found quite distracting and boring -- many pages seemed to me as if the author just wanted to stuff up and try to lengthen the book. The story picked-up greatly after these. I would have preferred a different ending :)0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. The Man Who Laughs Will make You CryBy CustomerThis book completely tragic like Hunchback of Notre Dame. A young boy mutilated at birth so he can only appear to grin hidiously all the time He is loved by a beautiful.blind girl he is raised with both rescued in early childhood. This story like "Hunchbook" is full of irony about the culture of beautyin the story of mankind I read this when i was young and I cried even harder this time Very powerful and lifechanging.

The Man Who Laughs (also published under the title By Order of the King) is a work by Victor Hugo, originally published in April 1869 under the French title L'Homme qui rit. Although among Hugo's most obscure works, it was adapted into a popular 1928 film, directed by Paul Leni and starring Conrad Veidt, Mary Philbin and Olga Baclanova. It was also again recently adapted for the 2012 French film L'Homme Qui Rit, directed by Jean-Pierre Ameacute;ris and starring Geacute;rard Depardieu, Marc-Andreacute; Grondin and Christa Theret. The first major character whom the reader is introduced to is a mountebank who dresses in bearskins and calls himself Ursus (Latin for "bear"). His only companion is a large domesticated wolf, whom Ursus has named Homo (Latin for ldquo;manrdquo;, in a pun over the Hobbesian saying "homo homini lupus", meaning "man is a wolf to his fellow man."). Ursus lives in a caravan, which he conveys to holiday fairs and markets throughout southern England, where he sells folk remedies. The action moves to an English sea coast, on the night of January 29, 1690. A group of wanderers, their identities left unrevealed to the reader, are urgently loading a ship for departure. A boy, ten years old, is among their company, but they leave him behind and cast off. This edition has been formatted for your Kindle, with an active table of contents. It has also been annotated, with extensive additional information about the book and also Victor Hugo, including an overview, background, plot, criticisms, references in other works biographical and bibliographical information.

From Library JournalThe recent success of the stage adaptation of Les Miserables has made Hugo's name widely known to the general public. Atlantean Press marks this resurgence with the inauguration of a series of re-published works by Hugo. The Man Who Laughs ( L'Homme qui rit , 1869), generally unavailable in English since the turn of the century, is the first volume in the series. This translation, by an unidentified translator, remains highly readable. The work itself, however, despite the touching tale of the love between the blind Dea and the deformed Gwynplaine, is highly stylized, extremely long, and often tedious. It will be interesting primarily for readers wishing to gain familiarity with a lesser known work by the father of French romanticism and with the tastes of the French reading public at the time.- Anthony Caprio, Oglethorpe Univ., AtlantaCopyright 1991 Reed Business Information, Inc.
