VANCE, n.d., 1876-1879 Arrangement: By record series, then chronological Reprocessed by: James Mark Valsame Date: March 25, 2004 Zebulon Baird Vance (13 May 1830-14 April 1894), Confederate soldier, governor of North Carolina, congressman, and U.S. senator, was the third child and second son of David and Mira Baird Vance. He was born in the old homestead in Buncombe County, on Reems Creek, about twelve miles north of Asheville. After attending the neighborhood schools, he enrolled in 1843 (at age thirteen) in Washington College, near Jonesboro in eastern Tennessee, but withdrew the next year on the death of his father, who left a widow and seven children. In search of better educational opportunities Mrs. Vance moved to Asheville and put her children in school there. In 1850 Vance read law briefly under John W. Woodfin and in July 1851 arrived at The University of North Carolina to continue his legal studies. The next year, after being licensed to practice in the state’s county courts, he returned to Asheville and was immediately elected solicitor for Buncombe County. In 1853 he was admitted to practice in the superior courts. Yet law never brought forth his best endeavors. For Vance law was primarily preparation for politics, which was his passion. Success in the courtroom was usually the result of wit, humor, boisterous eloquence, and clever retorts, not knowledge of the law. He understood people better than he did judicial matters. Vance entered North Carolina politics as a Henry Clay Whig but on the dissolution of his party aligned himself with the American or Know-Nothing party. -

Descendants of Thomas Bragg Generation No. 1 1 1. T HOMAS B RAGG was born Abt. 1580 in England. He married M ARY (MOLLY) N EWPORT Abt. 1615 in James Town, James City, Virginia, daughter of C HRISTOPHER N EWPORT and K ATHERINE P ROCTOR . Notes for T HOMAS B RAGG : There is a common folk-tale of "Six Bragg brothers in England. Three went North, three went South." Thomas, William, and John being the ones who went South in England. Supposedly the Susan Constant (under Adm. Christopher Newport's command and, according to Daughter's of the American Revolution, carrying two Bragg teenagers, Thomas and John. Thomas Bragg and Molly Newport were joined in matrimony about two years before Christopher Newport's death. Born in England around the year 1580, Thomas served a stint in the British Navy prior to being hired by his future father-in-law. Little is known about his life in England, just that he and two brothers, John and William, came to America, settled, and became the ancestors of the vast majority of Bragg families currently living in the United States. Having "obtained land grants from the Crown" for his services in the Navy, Thomas and his new bride, Molly Newport, settled down to begin raising their children, the first Braggs born in America, William (1624) and John Bragg. Little is known about John and his family, but the descendants of his brother William have been extensively researched. William was blessed with the birth of a son (John) in 1647. The child was born at Old Rappahannock, Virginia, the location to which William migrated. -

CLARK, n.d., 1861-1862 Arrangement: By record series, then chronological Reprocessed by: James Mark Valsame Date: May 26, 2005 Henry Toole Clark (February 7, 1808-April 14, 1874), lawyer, politician, and governor of North Carolina, was born on his father's plantation on Walnut Creek near Tarboro. His father, James West Clark, son of Christopher and Hannah Turner Clark, was a Princeton graduate (1796). He represented Bertie County in the North Carolina House of Commons in 1802-3 and in 1810-11 represented Edgecombe in the house, while his brother-in-law. Henry Irwin Toole, Jr., was state senator from the same county. From 1812 to 1815, James W. Clark represented Edgecombe in the state senate; then he served a single term in Congress (1815-17). He later served as chief clerk in the Navy Department (1829-31) under Secretary of the Navy John Branch, a close friend. James dark's wife, Arabella Toole Clark, was a daughter of Henry Irwin and Elizabeth Haywood Toole, prominent Edgecombe citizens. Henry T. Clark began his education at George Phillips's school in Tarboro and later entered a school in Louisburg. In 1822 he enrolled in The University of North Carolina, being graduated with the class of 1826. He studied law under a relative, William Henry Haywood, Jr., who later (1843-46) served in the U.S. Senate. Although his father joined the Whig party after Branch's resignation from President Andrew Jackson's cabinet, young Henry, influenced by his Haywood cousins, temporarily remained a Democrat. -

The Western North Carolina Railroad, 1855-1894
THE WESTERN NORTH CAROLINA RAILROAD, 1855-1894 A thesis Presented to The Faculty of the Graduate School Western Carolina University In Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Master of Arts by William Hutson Abrams, Jr. August 6, 1976 PREFACE The Western North Carolina Railroad was the instrumental force in opening up the isolated communities of Western North Carolina. This paper will deal primarily with the construction of this railroad which left Salisbury, climbed the mountains to Asheville, and continued to ter.ninal points of Paint Rock and Ducktown, on the Tennessee Line. The difficulties encountered during construction will be emphasized along with the political aspects that went along with construction. Emphasis will be placed on the time between the State's acquisition of the Railroad in 1875 and the completion to Murphy in 1891. An introductory chapter will briefly cover the start of the railroad in 1855, its role in the Civil War, and the delays in construction caused by the scandals of the Reconstruction Period. Starting with 1875, a vital element in the construction, convict labor, will be dealt with. The management of the railroad varied between state and private ownership. It suffered the financial pains that many early lines endured. Most of all, it was hindered by the ever present problem presented by nature as the track was built through so~e of the roughest terrain east of the Rocky Mountains. This was really the significant feature of the railroad because at many times its further construction seemed to be impossible. Political, financial, managerial, and labor problems testify to the trying task that was accomplished and to the desire of the people of the western part of the state to have their railroad. -

This includes present day Warren, Franklin, and Vance County. Members are encouraged to submit material for publication. The editorial staff will judge the material on relevance to area, interest, usefulness and content. Members are encouraged to submit queries for each journal. Did You Know? North Carolina Discover the history, geography, and government of North Carolina. The Land and Its People The state is divided into three distinct topographical regions: the Coastal Plain, the Piedmont Plateau, and the Appalachian Mountains. The Coastal Plain affords opportunities for farming, fishing, recreation, and manufacturing. The leading crops of this area are bright-leaf tobacco, peanuts, soybeans, and sweet potatoes. Large forested areas, mostly pine, support pulp manufacturing and other forest-related industries. Commercial and sport fishing are done extensively on the coast, and thousands of tourists visit the state’s many beaches. The mainland coast is protected by a slender chain of islands known as the Outer Banks. The Appalachian Mountains—including Mount Mitchell, the highest peak in eastern America (6,684 feet)—add to the variety that is apparent in the state’s topography. More than 200 mountains rise 5,000 feet or more. In this area, widely acclaimed for its beauty, tourism is an outstanding business. The valleys and some of the hillsides serve as small farms and apple orchards; and here and there are business enterprises, ranging from small craft shops to large paper and textile manufacturing plants. The Piedmont Plateau, though dotted with many small rolling farms, is primarily a manufacturing area in which the chief industries are furniture, tobacco, and textiles. Here are located North Carolina’s five largest cities. In the southeastern section of the Piedmont—known as the Sandhills, where peaches grow in abundance—is a winter resort area known also for its nationally famous golf courses and stables. -

On the eve of the American Civil War, North Carolina was a rural state with a total population of 992,622. Most citizens had been born in North Carolina and farmed for a living. Less than 1 percent of the state’s population in 1860 was foreign born, and about 70 percent of white families owned no slaves. Nevertheless, African Americans composed approximately one-third of the total population, and the majority were slaves. Few urban commercial centers existed, and Wilmington, the largest town, had fewer than 10,000 citizens. Yeoman Famers The majority of North Carolinians in 1860 were white subsistence farmers who worked small farms, 50 to 100 acres, and owned fewer than 20 slaves. They were more concerned with rainfall, crops, and seasonal changes for planting and harvesting than with national politics. They produced most of what they consumed and relied on the sale of surplus crops for money to buy what they could not grow or make by hand on their farms. These men would constitute the bulk of North Carolina’s army in the coming war. Planters Individuals who owned 20 or more slaves were considered planters. Most North Carolina planters lived in the Coastal Plain and Piedmont regions of the state, where conditions favored large-scale farming. Although they made up a minority, these individuals exercised political influence far greater than their actual number when compared to families with few or no slaves. -

FLOOD, CHRISTINE ROWSE, Ph.D. The Arbiters of Compromise: Sectionalism, Unionism, and Secessionism in Maryland and North Carolina. (2015) Directed by Dr. Mark Elliott, 268 pp. The upper south was a region that was in the literal and figurative middle during the secession crisis of 1860-1861. In the late antebellum period, the upper south had diverse populations, burgeoning economic growth and still-vibrant two-party politics, even after the collapse of the Whig party. As the north and the cotton states descended into more radicalized political positions, the upper south maintained a strong sectional identity that positioned the region as the only sane and rational part of the deteriorating nation. Upper south sectional identity was rooted in general distaste for extremism of any sort, a political culture that could allow negotiation on the question of slavery in the territories, a willingness to give the Lincoln administration a chance, and the belief that the upper south states would provide the political and social leadership to forestall secession and war. Though seemingly dissimilar at first glance, Maryland and North Carolina were two states which approached the matter of union of disunion with similar caution, and were the home of strong examples of upper south sectional identity. Through a study of both the unionist and secessionist leadership in each state, this dissertation reveals the development of the upper south sectional identity and the significant attempts at compromise that were being present in Maryland and North Carolina during the secession winter. These two states provide two excellent case studies of upper south sectional identity, as each state had populations and political leadership that was not tied to perpetual and unrestricted slavery, as well as leadership drawn from the slaveholding and non-slaveholding population. -

UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA Los Angeles Party Formation in the United States Adissertationsubmittedinpartialsatisfactionofthe requirements for the degree Doctor of Philosophy in Political Science by Darin Dion DeWitt 2013 c Copyright by Darin Dion DeWitt 2013 ABSTRACT OF THE DISSERTATION Party Formation in the United States by Darin Dion DeWitt Doctor of Philosophy in Political Science University of California, Los Angeles, 2013 Professor Thomas Schwartz, Chair This dissertation is about how political parties formed in the world’s first mass democracy, the United States. I trace the process of party formation from the bottom up. First, I ask: How do individuals become engaged in politics and develop political affiliations? In most states, throughout the antebellum era, the county was the primary unit of political admin- istration and electoral representation. Owing to their small size, contiguity, and economic homogeneity, I expect that each county’s active citizens will form a county-wide governing coalition that organizes and dominates local politics. Second, I ask: Which political actor had incentives to lure county organizations into one coalition? I argue that the institutional rules for electing United States Senators – indirect election by state legislature – induced prospective United States Senators to construct a majority coalition in the state legislature. Drawing on nineteenth century newspapers, I construct a new dataset from the minutes of political meetings in three states between 1820 and 1860. I find that United States Senators created state parties out of homogeneous counties. They encouraged cooperation among county-wide governing coalitions by canvassing annual county political meetings, drafting ii and revising a multi-issue policy platform that had the potential to unite a majority of the state’s county governing coalitions, encouraging individual counties to create county- wide committees of correspondence and vigilance, and, finally, organizing a permanent state central committee and regular state-wide conventions.
