The World Chess Cup final in Baku was more than the chess lovers could ask for – exciting, dramatic and with all-in stake! Sergey Karjakin started the final poorly, with 0-2, and just when we thought it’s all over, as Sidler needed 0.5/2, Karjakin stroke back and forced the tie-breaks! From the perspective of education, culture, science and games, the festival offers all-day family entertainment. The founder and organizer of the Global Chess Festival is Judit Polgar, number 1 female chess player for more than 25 years, who beyond her sport achievements has also succeeded in developing a unique innovative educational program. Since 2007 the Global Chess Festival's predecessor the Aquaprofit-Polgar Chess Festival, has grown into a highly prestigious social event, in which gladly participate well-known personalities, 6 NL OCTOBER 2015 EUROPEAN CHESS UNION sportsmen, artists, scientists, educators and most of all children. People of all nations in the world are connected by a universal, thought-provoking game. The goal is in 10 years to attract 5 million people from the 5 continents to join the Global Chess Festival, and to provide opportunity for people to establish cooperation and build friendships across the barriers of language, age, gender, ethnicity, religion, physical ability or social status. Under the umbrella of the Global Chess Festival chess events in 8 locations on 4 continents took place - Budapest and Győr/Hungary, Santiago/Chile, St. Luis/USA, Subotica/Serbia, Satu Mare/Romania, Melbourne/Australia, and Christchurch/New Zealand. The events were held on Saturday, 17 October, 2015. The highlight of the event was the Highlander rapid tournament, in which former World Champion Anatoly Karpov and former FIDE-World Champion Rustam Kasimdzhanov played against two local players: Olympic silver medalist Csaba Balogh and Benjamin Gledura, Hungary’s most promising junior player. The concept of the tournament was inspired by the main theme of the famous “Highlander” movie: "There can be only one winner". Accordingly, only the winner of the tournament would win a prize, which, however, was quite substantial: 6 million Hungarian Forint (roughly 20,000 Euros). In the first semifinal match 16-year-old Hungarian sensationally beat the ex-world with 1.5-0.5 to win the match.
