  • Evaluating Talent Acquisition Via the NFL Draft
Evaluating Talent Acquisition Via the NFL Draft by Casey Barney Anthony Caravella Michael Cullen Gary Jackson Craig E. Wills WPI-CS-TR-13-01 March 2013 1 Executive Summary In this work we apply data analytics to the National Football League Draft enabling us to pose and seek answers to a number of interesting questions regarding the success of drafting players over the period 2000 through the most recent 2012 draft and league season. The analysis is based on measuring the cost of acquiring players through the draft and the success of these players once acquired. We employ two primary metrics for measuring the cost of drafted players. The first simply uses the round in which a player is taken while the second uses a table of draft pick values initially developed within the NFL in the early 1990s. We also employ two metrics for measuring the success of drafted players where the first assigns a value to each player’s performance for a season. The second was developed as part of this work and is based on a weighted score for games played, games started and recognition as a top player. Using these metrics, we examine many questions of interest. We first examine which teams have drafted the best using combinations of cost and success metrics for all 32 NFL teams. If we ignore costs then Green Bay is the team that has drafted the best players since 2000 with New England and San Francisco close behind. In contrast, Washington has acquired the least amount of talent via the draft.

Louisiana football... coaching staff Rickey Bustle Louisiana head coach Rickey Bustle has guided the Cajuns for seven seasons and enters his eighth year in Cajun Country in 2009. The Bustle File Bustle’s Cajuns have won six games in three of the past four seasons, a stretch not equaled since UL was a member of the Big West Conference from 1993-95. In fact, since the 2005 season, only three Sun Belt schools can boast three six-win seasons. Coach Bustle was victorious 23 times in his first five seasons with the Cajuns Head Coach from 2002-06, including 11 of the last 17 games. UL won only nine games in the five seasons prior to Bustle’s arrival from 1997-2001. Clemson, ‘76 Bustle saw his winning percentage increase each of the first four seasons since Eighth Season taking the job in 2002, but regressed to .500 in 2006. His 6-6 record in 2006 was only deemed a regression because of the high standards and raised levels of Personal expectations by the Cajuns and their fans. In fact, Bustle’s 12 wins from 2005-06 Born: August 23, 1953 were the most in a two-year period since 1994-95. One of Bustle’s proudest moments was watching four-time All-Sun Belt Hometown: Summerville, S.C. selection and 2008 SBC Player of the Year, Tyrell Fenroy, become just the seventh Wife: Lynn player in NCAA history to rush for 1,000 yards in four consecutive seasons. Son: Brad Under Bustle, the Cajuns have been .500 or better at home in six of his seven seasons.

  • NFL Draft 2013 Scouting Report: TE Vance Mcdonald, Rice
2013 NFL DRAFT SCOUTING REPORT APRIL 1, 2013 NFL Draft 2013 Scouting Report: TE Vance McDonald, Rice *Our TE grades can and will change as more information comes in from Pro Day workouts, leaked Wonderlic test results, etc. We will update ratings as new info becomes available. **Our TE formulas had some slight changes in the offseason—an adjustment to better identify and value TE prospects that are smaller physically and are primed for the era ahead...the era of Jordan Reed and Delanie Walker-type TEs. Our historical grades will have changed some on various prospects as well, to show their grades by comparison. One could make the argument that in this "down" year for TE prospects, the best all-around TE prospect is Rice's Vance McDonald. Tyler Eifert is the best receiving weapon in the 2013 TE draft class...by far. McDonald's teammate Luke Willson is arguably the most athletic TE in this draft class. In an all-around sense (receiving, size, blocking ability, athleticism), McDonald is our top choice. Which then allows for the question of if you could only pick one, which TE would you pick in 2013 -- Eifert or McDonald? *We exclude Zach Ertz from this discussion as our computers see Ertz as a poor man's/watered-down version of Eifert. The difference between the two (Eifert and McDonald) is a debate between what you are looking for in an NFL TE. Eifert is the top receiving weapon of a TE in this class. Eifert is 6'6" tall, 250-pounds, and very nimble for his size.
