AN ANALYSIS OF THE MUSICAL INTERPRETATIONS OF NINA SIMONE by JESSIE L. FREYERMUTH 2010 Abstract Nina Simone was a prominent jazz musician of the late 1950s and 60s. Beyond her fame as a jazz musician, Nina Simone reached even greater status as a civil rights activist. Her music spoke to the hearts of hundreds of thousands in the black community who were struggling to rise above their status as a second-class citizen. Simone’s powerful anthems were a reminder that change was going to come. Nina Simone’s musical interpretation and approach was very unique because of her background as a classical pianist. Nina’s untrained vocal chops were a perfect blend of rough growl and smooth straight-tone, which provided an unquestionable feeling of heartache to the songs in her repertoire. Simone also had a knack for word painting, and the emotional climax in her songs is absolutely stunning. Nina Simone did not have a typical jazz style. Critics often described her as a “jazz-and-something-else-singer.” She moved effortlessly through genres, including gospel, blues, jazz, folk, classical, and even European classical. Probably her biggest mark, however, was on the genre of protest songs. Simone was one of the most outspoken and influential musicians throughout the civil rights movement. Her music spoke to the hundreds of thousands of African American men and women fighting for their rights during the 1960s. -

Chair’s Blog ear readers, welcome to your August magazine. You may just read this before the end of July as the magazine is published a week prior to the end of each month, so you may be able to get to the last event in the July calendar, Weston-S-Mare Pride. D This is an important event for us and as I am writing this in the middle of July so you will have to wait for the September magazine for a report on it. The reason I have mentioned it is that this year has been and still is a very busy time for GayWest and also very exciting. One of the advantages of the group is that we are completely self- funding and all the income we receive is from yourselves and donations. By being self-funding we are in control of our finances, good or bad and are not reliant on council or state grants that can be stopped at any time. We have heard of many LGBT organisations having to disband due to losing their grants this year. Over the last couple of years we have been able to increase our membership and it now stands at almost 90 members. 60% of you receive this magazine online which keeps the printing cost down considerably, however being the generous lot that we are we have splashed out this month on a full colour addition as we celebrate our summer events. There will be a limited number of magazines for sale at the Rainbow Café for £2.00p each, and of course you can download and print as many of them as you wish yourselves. -

Bethan Bide 8 September 2017 3 Abstract This thesis considers the relationship between fashion, austerity and London in the years 1945 to 1951—categorised by popular history as a period of austerity in Britain. London in the late 1940s is commonly remembered as a drab city in a state of disrepair, leading fashion historians to look instead to Paris and New York for signs of post-war energy and change. Yet, looking closer at the business of making and selling fashion in London, it becomes clear that, behind the shortages, rubble and government regulation, something was stirring. The main empirical section of the thesis is divided into four chapters that explore different facets of London’s fashionable networks. These consider how looking closely at the writing, making, selling and watching of austerity fashion can help us build a better understanding of London fashion in the late 1940s. Together, these chapters reveal that austerity was a driving force for dynamic processes of change— particularly in relation to how women’s ready-to-wear fashions were made and sold in the city—and that a variety of social, economic and political conditions in post- war Britain changed the way manufacturers, retailers and consumers understood the symbolic capital of London fashion. -

MG: Absolutely. Very happy. SB: Well, first of all, I would like to ask you….Where were you born and brought up? MG: I was born in London in 1943. I was brought up in London. We lived for a short time in Bournemouth at the end of the war, but mostly in London. SB: Oh right. And what I wanted to ask you was… what were your earliest recollections of you coming from a show business family? MG: From a very, very early age I can remember events that I couldn’t place the date of but clearly when I was four, five or six I can remember Richard Tauber, the great tenor, coming to tea with Uncle Bernie and Auntie Carol, as I called them and falling through the deck chair in the garden of the house.
