FILM FESTIVAL 22Nd - 29Th November 2012
UNDER THE AUSPICES OF THE EMBASSY OF THE REPUBLIC OF SERBIA IN PRETORIA SERBIAN ARTS AND CULTURE SOCIETY AFRICA SERBIAN FILM FESTIVAL 22nd - 29th November 2012 NU METRO, MONTECASINO An author’s perspective of the world Film, as a sublimation of all arts, is a true medium, a universal vehicle with which the broader public is presented with a world view, as seen by the eye of the fi lmmaker. Nowadays, due to the global economic crisis, which is ironically producing technological and all sorts of other develop- ments, an increasing number of people are pushed to the margins of average standards of living, and fi lmmakers are given the chance to bring under their ‘protection’ millions of disillusioned people with their fi lmmaking capabilities. Art, throughout its history, has always praised but has also been heavily critical of its subject. Film is not just that. Film is that and so much more. Film is life itself and beyond life. Film is everything many of us dream about but never dare to say out loud. That is why people love fi lms. That is why it is eternal. It tears down boundaries and brings together cul- tures. It awakens curiosity and builds bridges from one far away coast to another. Film is a ‘great lie’ but an even greater truth. Yugoslavian, and today the Serbian fi lm industry has always been ‘in trend’. It might sound harsh but, unfortunately, this region has always provided ample ‘material’ for fi lms. Under our Balkan clouds there has been an ongoing battle about which people are older, which came and settled fi rst, who started it and who will be fi rst to leave and such battles have been and continue to be an inspiration to fi lm producers. -

Yingjie has been instrumental in helping me shape the theoretical framework, sharpen the focus, and improve the structure and the flow of the thesis. He has spent a considerable amount of time reading many drafts and providing insightful comments. I wish to thank him for his confidence in this project, and for his invaluable support, guidance, and patience throughout my PhD program. I also wish to thank Professor Wanning Sun and Professor Louise Edwards for their valued support and advice. Shohei Juku Aikido Canada
Shohei Juku Aikido Canada Monthly Newsletter March, 2011. Number 75 “Over the Rainbow” Spring, March, hopeful Spring, joyful days... We had to practice saying these words around the time of the graduation ceremony in March. The Grade 5 class gave a graduation speech to Grade 6 and Grade 6 did the same to Grade 5 and the teachers. Around now I usually look back at all my memories about past graduation ceremonies. I think the ceremony does leave long lasting impressions on everyone's hearts. The other day I watched the 83rd Academy Awards on TV. This award was established in 1927 to promote the art of movie making in America. When I was a student I used to go watch foreign films like American movies. I preferred going alone. That way if I saw sad scenes, I could cry hard without worrying about anybody else. But there were no such scenes in Bruce Lee movies. In fact I was so excited that I danced around a lot. It was hard to copy Bruce Lee but his moves were so cool that it was worth trying. I skipped school and stayed at the movie theatre all day long with my lunch box. I was definitely young then! That much I was into Bruce Lee but unfortunately he never received an Academy Award. I believe he didn't even get nominated. When people accept an Academy Award, they thank their staff and cast members, praise and recognize their efforts but apparently they do not receive any prize money. The winners only receive a statue called “Oscar”. -
84Th ACADEMY AWARDS® NOMINATIONS ANNOUNCED
MEDIA CONTACT Teni Melidonian [email protected] Toni Thompson [email protected] January 24, 2012 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE 84th ACADEMY AWARDS® NOMINATIONS ANNOUNCED BEVERLY HILLS, CA — Nominations for the 84th Academy Awards were announced today (Tuesday, January 24) by Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences President Tom Sherak and 2010 Oscar® nominee Jennifer Lawrence. Sherak and Lawrence, who was nominated for an Academy Award® for her lead performance in “Winter’s Bone,” announced the nominees in 10 of the 24 Award categories at a 5:38 a.m. PT live news conference attended by more than 400 international media representatives. Lists of nominations in all categories were then distributed to the media in attendance and online via the official Academy Awards website, www.oscar.com. Academy members from each of the branches vote to determine the nominees in their respective categories – actors nominate actors, film editors nominate film editors, etc. In the Animated Feature Film and Foreign Language Film categories, nominations are selected by vote of multi-branch screening committees. All voting members are eligible to select the Best Picture nominees. Nominations ballots were mailed to the 5,783 voting members in late December and were returned directly to PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC), the international accounting firm, for tabulation. Official screenings of all motion pictures with one or more nominations will begin for members this weekend at the Academy's Samuel Goldwyn Theater. Screenings also will be held at the Academy's Linwood Dunn Theater in Hollywood and in London, New York and the San Francisco Bay Area. All active and life members of the Academy are eligible to select the winners in all categories, although in five of them – Animated Short Film, Live Action Short Film, Documentary Feature, Documentary Short Subject and Foreign Language Film – members can vote only if they have seen all of the nominated films in those categories. -
