From Our Parish She is clothed with strength and dignity, and laughs at the days to come. She opens her mouth in wisdom; kindly instruction is on her tongue. She watches over the affairs of her household, and does not eat the bread of idleness. Her children rise up and call her blessed; her husband, too, praises her: “Many are the women of proven worth, but you have excelled them all.” Charm is deceptive and beauty fleeting; the woman who fears the Lord is to be praised. Proverbs 31:10, 2530 SAINT ISIDORE THE LABORER (10701130) Patron Saint of Peasants and DayLaborers Feast day May 15 The Basilica of San Albino would like to extend a heartfelt “Thank you” to all who helped make our Isidore was a Spanish day laborer; who was born Cinco de Mayo fundraiser a success. One day his fellowlaborers complained to their master that Isidore did not come to work in the morning. Upon investigation Juan de Vargas found Isidore at prayer, while an angel was plowing for him. On another occasion two angels were seen plowing beside him. God has worked many miracles by means of Isidore. Through Isidore’s intercession Juan de Vargas’ daughter was brought back to life. He also prayed to have a fountain of fresh water to burst from the dry earth as well as many other miracles. He was married to Maria Torribia, a canonized saint, who is venerated in Spain as Maria della Cabeza. In Spanish, cabeza means ‘head’. Many times the relic of the saint’s head has been carried in a procession to relieve droughts. Maria and Isidore had one son. Once their son fell into a deep well and at the prayers of his parents the water of the well rose miraculously to ground level, bringing the child with it, alive and well. St. Isidore is venerated as the patron of peasants and daylaborers. He was canonized by Pope Gregory XV on 12 March 1622.
