Above all, all glory and honour to God, the LORD who relates to His people by covenant, for His promise of the New Covenant; to Christ His Son for inaugurating the Father’s promise; and to the Holy Spirit for empowering mankind to participate in the promise. ii ABSTRACT The theological debate surrounding the identity of the New Covenant law in Jeremiah 31:33 is persistent and without resolution. Among others, two main views identify Jeremiah’s supposed law as either the Old Testament Mosaic Law (implying continuity) or the New Testament law of Christ in the Christian age (advocating for discontinuity with the old). But barely has any of the debates comprehensively explored the possibility of the reference to “My law” being metaphoric. Much study on the identity of the supposed New Covenant law has mainly been centred on etymology and interpretations drawn from the New Testament’s progressive revelation. But to note, a word derives its meaning from the context it is used. Thus our study attempted to derive the meaning of Jeremiah’s law reference from its near and surrounding context, and to specifically explore the possibility of it constituting a metaphoric rather than a literal term. This study mainly employs the historical-grammatical methodology because of its attested principles which include: divine inspiration, context, lexicography, grammatical analysis and historical-cultural background. The biblical-theological approach to interpreting the Bible is also incorporated given that covenant is one of the central themes in the grand narrative of Scripture – both Old and New Testaments. This study explores the significance and essence of the Mosaic Covenant and its Law within the ANE context; after which the necessity of the New Covenant in light of the existing old one is determined. The essence of the New Covenant (its distinguishing factor from the old) is also analysed. The New Covenant prophecy of Ezekiel, a younger contemporary of Jeremiah, will also be considered in the analysis. Parallel observations from both Jeremiah and Ezekiel will be drawn to help determine the defining factor of the New Covenant prophecy – the promise of heart transformation resulting in a restored relationship with God. This study will explore the concept of heart transformation by the power of the Spirit of God as the essence of both Jeremiah’s and Ezekiel’s New Covenant prophecies, and consider whether the reference to “My law” in Jeremiah 31:33 is a metaphor typifying the anticipated divine heart change, and not necessarily a reference to a literal law code, whether Mosaic or another type of law(s). iii OPSOMMING Die teologiese debat wat die identiteit van die Nuwe verbondswet in Jeremia 31:33 omsluit, is voortgaande en sonder oplossing. Benewens ander is daar twee hoofstroom-sienings wat Jeremia se voorgestelde wet as óf die Ou Testamentiese wet van Moses (impliseer kontinuïteit) óf die Nuwe Testamentiese wet van Christus in die Christelike era (redeneer vir die vervulling van die oue) identifiseer. Tog, in geeneen van hierdie debatte is ʼn in-diepte studie gedoen na die moontlikheid dat die verwysing na “My wet” ʼn metaforiese uitdrukking kan wees nie. 'n Aantal studies aangaande die identiteit van die voorgestelde Nuwe verbondswet het gesentreer rondom etimologie en interpretasies wat afgelei kon word van die Nuwe Testament se voortgaande openbaring. Hierteenoor is dit belangrik om op te merk dat ʼn woord se betekenis afgelei word binne die konteks waarbinne die woord gebruik word. Daarom poog hierdie studie om die betekenis van Jeremia se wet af te lei van die verwysingsraamwerk binne die woord se nabye en omliggende konteks, en om spesifiek die moontlikheid te ondersoek dat die betekenis ʼn metaforiese uitdrukking ondervang eerder as net ʼn letterlike term. Given that it took a fair amount of effort and my passion for the subject matter, I am happy to share it with church members and friends. Please allow me to introduce you to the project by saying just a few things. If you ask someone what Covenant Theology is and if it is a good or bad thing, you will likely hear lots of different answers. It is fairly common for evangelicals to respond by either saying they do not know what Covenant Theology is or by describing it as something unbiblical and relating to a particular view regarding millennialism, baptism, or Israel. There are three major problems with such responses. First, classic Covenant Theology is essentially concerned with matters of sin and salvation, not something else. Second, the biblical support for such things as the federal headship of Adam and Jesus is strong (federal being from the Latin foedus meaning covenant). Third, when Covenant Theology is rejected, justification by grace alone through faith alone in Christ alone is at best in serious jeopardy. My dissertation is a promotion and defense of classic Covenant Theology. I have written out of a pastoral passion to help people understand human history federally/covenantally just as the Apostle Paul did as he wrote inspired Scripture (see Romans 5:12-21). Likewise, I have written in order to demonstrate the vital connection between Covenant Theology and justification by faith alone, the doctrine that is so commonly compromised by rejecters of the federal perspective.

This weekend’s sermon is week 4 in the series called “The Name” where Pastor J.D. takes a close look at God’s character as revealed in Exodus 32-34. This weekend’s message focuses on the wrath of God, an often misunderstand aspect of God’s character. If we are going to really get to know God, we have to study every aspect of his character, not just the ones that we gravitate toward. Every aspect of God’s character is good and right. So we can have confidence that, as we get to know him better, our trust, appreciation, understanding, and ultimately our worship of him will all increase. Romans 3:9-20 is a brilliant and concise summation of what many Old Testament passages teach us about humanity’s condition. No one is righteous. We cannot justify the way we’ve chosen to live our lives, and God is right to demand wrath for offending him at every turn. Paul makes this point from the prophets like Jeremiah, the Psalms, and other places. This is a necessary part of his explanation in Romans about what the gospel is, and why Jesus had to die on the cross. Jeremiah 31:31-37 was a great prophecy predicting exactly how God would solve the problem of humanity’s unrighteousness. This work represents the completion of Hafemann's study on 2 Corinthians 2-3, and fortunately his book is also available in an affordable version from Hendrickson publishers. The first work is contained in his 1986 dissertation, Suffering and the Spirit, which was also published by J. C. B. Mohr in the WUNT series (an abridged and edited version of this book titled Suffering and Ministry in the Spirit is available from Eerdmans, 1990). Hafemann tackles one of the most controverted texts in the pauline corpus (2 Corinthians 3), and his study and conclusions are bound to be of interest since one's understanding of 2 Corinthians 3 impinges on central issues in pauline theology, such as Paul's understanding of the Mosaic law and the hermeneutical implications of his use of the Old Testament. Indeed, from now on all scholars who address these issues must reckon with Hafemann, for his work represents the most thorough interpretation both of 2 Corinthians 3 and the Old Testament background to that text, and he directly challenges the scholarly consensus on this text.     The New Covenant Jeremiah 31:31-34 March 18, 2018 – Fifth Sunday of Lent The writing of the prophet Jeremiah are among the longest in the entire Bible. While the prophet can, at times, get a bit wordy, the book also contains some of the richest writing in scripture; and today’s text is among them. The concept of covenant is hugely important in the Hebrew Bible. Covenant is not a word we use often in every day vocabulary, with the possible exception of sometimes referring to the celebration of marriage as a covenant. But a covenant is an agreement, a contract, I might even say a sacred promise between two parties, usually in front of witnesses; and, and a covenant is usually “sealed” with some sign. I point to the wedding ring as a sign of the marriage covenant. About a year ago, I preached a sermon series on the covenants of the Old Testament. Remember them? There is God’s covenant with Noah in which God promises never to destroy the world again by flood. There is God’s covenant with Abraham in which God promises Abraham’s descendants land and descendents. There is God’s covenant with Moses in which God gives Moses the Ten Commandments and promises an organized and Godly society. There is God’s covenant with David, in which God promises that a descendent of David will always rule the Isrealites. And, on quick observation, you will notice that all these covenants are, in one way or another, designed to further God’s relationship with God’s people.

Exploring the Contours of Paul’s New Covenant Theology in 2 Corinthians 3 Matthew Barrett Matthew Barrett is Tutor of Systematic Theology and Church History at Oak Hill Theological College in London, England. He earned his Ph.D. from The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Systematic Theology. Dr. Barrett is the executive editor of Credo Magazine, as well as the author and editor of several books, including Salvation by Grace (P&R, 2013), Four Views on the Historical Adam (Zondervan, 2013 with A. B. Caneday), Owen on the Christian Life (Crossway, 2015 with Michael Haykin), and editor of the The 5 Solas Series (Zondervan, 2015-2017). Second Corinthians 3 is a hotly debated and difficult text. For example, Thomas Schreiner says 2 Corinthians 3 is “one of the most controverted texts in the Pauline corpus,”1 and is “full of exegetical difficulties and knotty problems.”2 David Garland believes the passage is “notoriously obscure”3 and Anthony Hanson says it is the “mount Everest of Pauline texts as far as difficulty is concerned—or should we rather call it the sphinx among texts, since its difficulty lies in its enigmatic quality rather than its com- plexity?”4 The result has been a hermeneutical maze of literature almost impossible to navigate.5 Nevertheless, the complexity and difficulty in translating and interpreting 2 Corinthians 3 is matched by its biblical-theological depth and insight.6 As the growing literature demonstrates, this one chapter leaves readers with a host of themes central to developing a Pauline theology (e.g., law, ministry, SBJT 19.3 (2015): 61-96 61 The Southern Baptist Journal of Theology 19.3 (2015) Spirit, glory, covenant).

    SUNDAY SCHOOL LESSONS Commentary by Michael Sigler September 14, 2014 Restoration Read Jeremiah 31:31-37 Key verse: “The time is coming, declares the Lord, when I will make a new covenant with the people of Israel and Judah” (Jeremiah 31:31). It’s been said that in the Old Testament the New Testament is concealed, and in the New Testament the Old Testament is revealed. In these verses, Jeremiah 31:31-37, God through the prophet speaks to the beleaguered peoples of Israel and Judah. But “concealed” in this word of hope for ancient Israel and Judah is a prophetic word for all peoples regarding the new covenant that Jesus Christ would bring. Verses 35-37 are words of promise and hope that the Jewish people would need during the dark days of the Exile. During the time that Babylonian armies destroyed Jerusalem and took many of the Jews into exile, God sent a word of promise and hope. It included this pledge of God’s faithfulness to his people: “If the created order should vanish from my sight, declares the Lord, only then would Israel’s descendants ever stop being a nation before me. The Lord proclaims: If the heavens above could be measured and the foundation of the earth below could be fathomed, only then would I reject Israel’s descendants for what they have done, declares the Lord” (vv. 36-37). Verses 31-34 speak of a covenant between God and Israel—one that Israel failed to keep— and of God’s intentions to make a new covenant: “The time is coming, declares the Lord, when I will make a new covenant with the people of Israel and Judah.

    WTJ 82 (2020): 137–52 PROGRESSIVE COVENANTALISTS AS REFORMED BAPTISTS Daniel Scheiderer At least three new systems of covenant theology have arisen in Calvinistic Baptist circles in recent decades: new covenant theology, progressive covenantalism, and 1689 Federalism (Reformed Baptists). Each group has its own proponents and its own circles of influence, but churches impacted by each proposal are generally familiar to one another. Because progressive covenantalists initially described themselves as a subset of new covenant theology, arguments against new covenant theology were often simply co-opted for use against progressive covenantalists. This article aims to demonstrate that progressive covenantalists have significant points of continuity with their Reformed Baptist brothers that facilitate mutual benefit between the two camps. To demonstrate this continuity, the cov- enants of works and grace and the new covenant are examined in the two systems alongside their Particular Baptist forefathers to show that all three groups operate with a basically continuous infrastructure. The benefit of such a study is that it distinguishes the progressive covenantal proposal from the proposal of new covenant theology while avoiding simplistic read- ings that deny the real differences between progressive covenantalists and Reformed Baptists. The study does not deny the real tension that exists in progressive covenantalists’ reinterpretation of the fourth commandment, but it sets aside that debate so that points of clear commonalities may be seen for what they are. Too often conversations about covenant theology have passed one another, and so this article aims to initiate a conversation between two groups that ought to be the nearest allies. “ rogressive covenantalism” broke onto the scene in 2012 with Peter Gentry and Stephen Wellum’s book Kingdom through Covenant.

    TMSJ 18/1 (Fall 2007) 221-232 NEW COVENANT THEOLOGY AND FUTURISTIC PREMILLENNIALISM Richard L. Mayhue Senior Vice President and Dean Professor of Pastoral Ministries and Theology New Covenant Theology (NCT) advocates have correctly abandoned the non-biblical covenants of Covenant Theology (CT). However, with few exceptions, they have inconsistently maintained CT’s eschatologies, which usually reject a future premillennial kingdom on earth, ruled over by Christ for 1,000 years in fulfillment of OT unconditional promises made to Abraham and David. After surveying the current theological landscape among prominent NCT writers, seven compelling reasons for embracing Futuristic Premillennialism (FP) are discussed: (1) Hermeneutics Is a Presupposition, Not a Theology, (2) Careful Exegesis Is Required, Not a Presupposed Theology, (3) Unconfused and Separate Identities for Israel and the Church, (4) Preservation of the Jewish Race and Israel, (5) Unconditional Abrahamic and Davidic Covenants, (6) Proper Order of Christ’s Return and Christ’s Reign, and (7) Promises of an Irreversible Restoration for the Nation. Because of these seven determinative, biblical facts, the only eschatology which would be consistent with NCT’s denial of the non-existent covenants espoused by CT would be FP. ***** This essay builds upon the four previous articles in this issue of TMSJ, dealing with New Covenant Theology (NCT): A Critique.
