We had intended to have a prompt early start for our meeting but there was so much talking and mingling that we started about 30 minutes late. It was good to see some of our interstate and country members attending with their wives ( including J im and Marcia Hepworth from Adelaide.) / There was some discussion on review of the _Society ' s Constitution, and a number of good suggestions were received. The matter was r e ferred back to the committee for consideration and report to the February meeting . John Long said that the Bi-Centennary Year would be a good opportunity to consider the bestowing of life memeberships . The Treasurer reported that the financial position was very healthy .

The Secretary advised that Fosters Light was available in 375mL bottles and members should buy some as the label may be slightly changed in the near future, ( he also said that we should ALWAYS buy new beers as they appear, for the same reason.) The Secretary then advised the meeting of problems in keeping up with the many changes which have taken place with the various Bond breweries. In the case of Swan and Emu labels it appears that we have missed out on 12 label changes_ Hannans Lager 1s being revived but will only be 1n cans- for the present .

The colour photocopies of the AGM and Ellis-Kells labels sold out and the Secretary has been instructed to have more available for the February meeting .

The raffle was drawn and the winners were:

1. Pin k 859 D_ Kruger Vic 2 _ Blue F21 A. Vardon Vic •:. .J _ Blue F92 R. Rooney Vic 4 . Pin I< BlOO R_ Donaldson Vic

Congratulation s to the winners .

A discussion then followed on what constitutes a col l ectable label, and nt os t members agreed that it was any label connected in any way with beer.

The Secretary then s howed an album with the labels mounted in the cheapest way - with dabs of wa ter soluble paste on white copy paper in a common lever arch file_ This compares with other types of albums shown at previous meetings.

The auction of the last of the Keith Wittenbach collections was held and once again ev e ry lot went to the on e bidder, this time it was Paul Rose of _

The meeting t hen adjourned for an e nd-o f - year lunch, after which the discussions a nd label exchanging continued until late in the afternoon_

- ----·---- A SHORT HISTORICAL REVIEW As a matter of interest, the Secretary advises a few statistics. Since July 1972 there has been 91 issues of the Newsletter excluding this issue, and with these the members have each received a total of 1900 beer labels. Multiply that by the number of members and it makes quite a heap of labels. Also in that time there has b e en 82 raffles with 20 , 480 labels a§ prizes as well as a number o f bottles of spec ial beer . The major winners in the raffles have been : - K Wittenbach (dec ) 2 1 prizes G Van Wyngaarden 15 S Roberts 12 A Freer 12 R Mackie 11 T Fisk 11 F Constable 11 R Grace 9 B Hamilton 9 C Pelton 8 D O ' Neil 8 as well , 88 other members have wo n f rom 7 pri z es e ach , down to· 1 priz e each , so there has been a f a irly g o od distribu t i o n . reme mbering that s ome of our l onger- standing me mb e r s have been i n ma ny mo re r a ffles that me mbers who j o ine d l ate r .

HIKE PINKARD, 5 Spring Street Claremont Tas, 7011, phone (002) 49 4527, has special QANTAS JETABOUT stopper label used on Matilda Bay Redback Beer - issued only in Tasmania. Hike wants other pub brewery labels NOT issued through VBLCS - especially the Joh Bjelke-Bitter label. Hike also has a couple of the TASMANIAN ROAD TRANSPORT ASSOCIATION labels t~· swap for other hard to get specials - Darwin or others.

DUDLEY CLARKE, Apt . 306, 3020 Glencrest Road Burlington Ontario L7N 2H2 Canada, has a small stock of wine and spirit labels which he would like to exchange . Dudley is also interested in exchanging beer labels in a small way with other members . .

HANK ARHAUR, 55 Malcolm Street North Beach W.A. 6020 has some of the elusive Bond labels featuring Bond Corp, Bond Brewing that were only available for a short time and as all labels have now been destroyed will NOT be available through the VBLCS. Contact Hank with your exchange offers and further details regarding these labels . Hank is particularly looking for 1984 & 1985 Commemoratives and Darwin specials.

GOD! HAlBACH, 260 Barrett Street Bracken Ridge 4017 Queensland also wants a Joh Bjelke Bitter label and will swap 50 West German labels for one.

GLEN LYNCH, flat 2, 36 Westbury Street, East St. Kilda 3183 Vic. phone (03) 534 0391 has Canadian beer labels from various breweries, all in mint condition. Any offer considered.

PHILIP DAVIN, 2 Lawrence St. East KEW Victoria 3102 has an ELLIS-KELLS Palmerston Dinner Ale (or other various other even RARER labels) that he wishes to swap for an Ellis-Kells "Buffalo Bitter".

JACK WILKS , 65 Tiverton Drive Hulgrave 3 170 Vic. Phon e (03) 561 4 2 21 still has a few Old Ballarat Brewery ( now Sovereign) special labels NOT issued by the VBLCS to swap for British or Swedish/Danish labels. Jack also has an extensive selection of New Zealand labels to swap for Br itish, Swedish, Danish or other New Zealand. As in , the mini-brewery boom is happening across the Tasman Sea. Illustrated here ( also on the front cover ) are some labels from New ' Zealand Hini Breweries. Some conventional labels, and some very interesting new designs. Unfortunately, we cannot show the exciting use of colours on some of these labels . The VBL CS is considering establishing contacts with these breweries, either d1rectly or through our New Zealand members to obtain labels . Ar e you interested in collectin g N .Z . labels through your society? / ~rap a line to the Secretary (o r phone) and we wil l see if this is a viable proposition.
