Abstract Founded in 1907, the Charlotte Cushman Club was originally intended to provide respectable lodgings for actresses appearing in Philadelphia theaters. In the years of World War II the Club ceased to provide residential services, becoming a favorite gathering place of theater lovers as well as of the many actresses and actors visiting the city with their touring companies. The Charlotte Cushman Club Records offer insight into the activities, the administration, and the membership of the Club during the whole life of the organization, until its closure in 1998. The collection also includes part of the holdings of the former Club’s museum and library.

Biography/History

Founded in 1907 by Lydia Ellicott Morris and a group of subscribers, the Charlotte Cushman Club was intended to provide respectable lodgings for actresses appearing in Philadelphia theaters. After having discarded the original idea of naming the Club after British actress Sarah Siddons – a member of the famed Kemble theatre family – Morris and her friends opted for a local figure, and eventually dedicated their organization to Charlotte Cushman (1816-1876), America's first internationally renowned actress, who briefly served as manager of the Walnut Street Theatre in the 1840s. The Club’s main house changed several addresses over the years. Initially located in a building on 10th and Pine Street, which the management had leased for one year, the house moved first to 1200 Locust Street, and later to 1010 Spruce Street (1920), where it would remain until the Depression years. In that period, financial difficulties led many touring companies to reduce their activities, and the Club, deeming its lodging services no longer a priority, relocated its headquarters to a suite at the Bellevue-Stratford Hotel in the years between 1932 and 1941. By the time the organization opened its new house at 1216 Locust Street, in 1942, it was no longer a residential club, having become a favorite gathering place for theater lovers as well as for the many actresses and actors visiting the city with their touring companies. A museum and a library were also opened and maintained during the clubhouse's subsequent relocations to 1314 Locust Street (1958-1964) and to the former home of the Poor Richard’s Club, at 239 South Camac Street (1964-1998). The activities and events organized by the Club included member parties and receptions in honor of some among the most prominent actresses, actors, and companies visiting Philadelphia. These events are very well documented in the collection, along with other initiatives launched by the Club beginning in the 1950s. The most notable of them was the Cushman Award for Lifetime Achievement in the Theatre, inaugurated in 1957 as “a tribute to a man or woman for distinguished contribution to the vitality of the American theatre”. The list of recipients of the Award includes , , Dame , Angela Lansbury, Katherine Hepburn, , John Houseman, , Joshua Logan and Zoe Caldwell. Other activities included the Fanny Kemble Award, annually bestowed in the 1960s to honor an actress and an actor for performances in Philadelphia in non-featured roles, and the Charlotte Cushman Scholarship Award (1970-1998), to support promising actresses and actors in the early stages of their career. In the late 1990s, believing that the Club had overcome its original residential and educational purposes, the management decided to cease its activities. In 2000, the clubhouse was

The Club has recently transformed itself into the Charlotte Cushman Foundation, which awards theater-related grants in the Greater Philadelphia area. The Foundation also provides scholarships to performing arts students in area colleges and universities and continues to give the Cushman Award “for outstanding leading actress in a play”, as part of the Barrymore Awards for Excellence in Theatre organized annually by Theatre Philadelphia. The University of the Arts, where the Foundation now has its offices, is home to the Cushman Club Board Room and Exhibit, which were established in 1999.

Scope and Contents

The Charlotte Cushman Club records offer insight into the activities, the administration, and the membership of the Club. At the same time, because of the direct involvement in the Club’s activities of several theatrical actresses, actors, directors, playwrights, and theater companies that visited Philadelphia during the whole twentieth century, the collection provides a privileged perspective on many of the theatrical events organized in the city in that period. The clippings, photographs, and correspondence documenting such events, as well as the wide number of nineteenth- and twentieth-century playbills, programs, and engravings also included in the collection, will be of special interest to theatre and cultural historians focusing on the United States and on Philadelphia in particular. The collection is divided into 19 different series. Series I-III are dedicated to administrative, financial, and property records. Series IV is devoted to membership records, including nomination and resignation forms and letters, information cards, and other correspondence with the membership. Series V is dedicated to the rest of the Club’s correspondence. Series VI-VII consist of the material relating to the guests and the social events hosted and organized by the Club. Series VIII gathers the Club’s publicity records. Series IX includes the material relating to the Club library and museum. Series X-XI contain clippings and photographs documenting the city’s theatrical activities and the events organized by the Club. Series XII consists of a collection of scrapbooks. Series XIII is devoted to scripts and theatrical production plans. Series XIV-XV include collections of theatrical playbills, programs, brochures, plays, and libretti. Series XVI is dedicated to drawings and engravings. Series XVII comprises published material, such as theatrical magazines, books, and articles. Series XVIII consists of a small collection of memorabilia relating to the Club. Finally, series XIX is devoted to artifacts and includes two toy theaters and their related stage sets. Please see the finding aid for more detailed information on each series.

Collection Inventory

I. Administrative records. Scope and Contents note

Series I includes the 1920 charter of the Cushman Club, the Club’s bylaws (1927-1996) and annual reports (1910-1946), the board of directors meeting minutes (1916-1978 and 1990s), the daily plan books (1933-1994), and reports and correspondence from board members and committees. Whenever possible, the documentation was arranged in chronological order. As a whole, this material allows for a solid grasp over the internal organization of the Club and the many activities it promoted during the century. In particular, the board meeting minutes, which cover the entire period 1916-1978, could serve as a useful starting point for more in-depth investigations on the many branches of activities of the Cushman Club – receptions and social events, residential services, library and museum –, each documented more in detail by the other series of the collection. The annual reports allow researchers to easily trace the many address changes of the Club's main house in the first decades of the organization.

III. House and property records. Scope and Contents note

Series III gathers the papers relating to the Cushman Club’s house and properties. It includes documentation on the administration, maintenance and renovations of the Club’s buildings, as well as household inventories and assessment reports. This material allows researchers to reconstruct the bureaucratic and financial aspects relating with the maintenance and the many relocations underwent by the Club’s main building during the years. Of particular interest is the assessment report included in the series, which, having been compiled in 1996, offers a useful description of the state of the main house only a few years before the Club ceased its activities. Included in the series is also an illustrated auction catalogue published in 2000, which describes a selection of items from the former Club collections. This document is useful for identifying at least part of the Club’s possessions before their dispersal following the sale of the main house in 2000.

V. Correspondence and relations with other organizations. Scope and Contents note

Series V includes the correspondence of the Cushman Club, and other material concerning the relationship between the Club and other national and local organizations.

Letters have been organized by correspondent name only in those cases in which a substantial number of letters is available. A group of letters and other material, including a transcription of a radio broadcasting, document the relationship with the (1941-1945), an organization that was part of the Allied Relief Fund during World War II and for which the Cushman Club served as the Philadelphia unit. Two separate folders are dedicated to the correspondence with the Theatre Library Association (1960s) and the Philadelphia Young Playwrights Festival (1990s). The series also include the correspondence with writer Dawn Langley Simmons (known at the time as Gordon Langley Hall), who was working on a biography of the actress and contacted the Club in 1960 for information on Charlotte Cushman. The correspondence between banker and collector Frank S. Stone and the Benjamin Pollock Toy Shop (1926-1948), a firm still active today in and especially known for its model theaters and theater-related toys and games, is also part of this series. Stone, a former member of the Library Company of Philadelphia, the Athenaeum and the Historical Society of Pennsylvania, probably donated this correspondence to the club, along with some notes and brochures also relating to the Pollock Toy Shop. This material, a large part of which was written by Benjamin Pollock himself and other members of his family, will be of use to theater historians interested in toy theaters and their lasting popularity in twentieth-century America.

- Page 22 - Charlotte Cushman Club records V. Correspondence and relations with other organizations

The rest of the correspondence is divided in nine different folders and arranged in chronological order from 1866 to 1998. This section contains autograph letters from several actresses, actors, singers, and theatre directors, such as Charlotte and Ursula Cushman, Hilda Spong, Wilson Barrett, Marcella Sembrich, Cornelia Otis Skinner, Douglass Montgomery, Lionel Barrymore, Maury Tuckerman, Helen Hayes, Ezra Stone, Cyril Ritchard, Anthony Newley, Martyn Green, and Eugenia Rawls. The list of institutions and organizations with which the Club corresponded include the American Society for Theatre Research, the Free Library of Philadelphia, the New York Public Library, the Walter Hampden Memorial Library, the Warren Public Library, the Beaver College, the Players Club, the Moore Institute of Art, Saint Mary’s College (Notre Dame, IN), the Athenaeum of Philadelphia, the U.S. Department of Commerce, and the General Society of Mayflower Descendants.

VI. Guests. Scope and Contents note

Series VI contains the material concerning the guests of the Charlotte Cushman Club. The series includes guest and gift registers, room receipts, notes, and correspondence with the guests. All of this material has been arranged in chronological order, except for the room receipts, which are organized alphabetically.

The correspondence consists of thank you letters, and letters regarding gifts and donations to the Club on the part of guests and members. Thank you letters include several notes from the theatrical casts that were hosted by the Club during their visits in Philadelphia, and messages sent by famous actresses and actors such as Neva Small and Hugh Martin. Dating from the 1920s to the 1970s, the letters concerning donations and gifts provide a glimpse into the relationship between the Club and its guests, but they also offer useful information on the books, plays, ephemera, and memorabilia accumulated across those decades by the Club library and museum.

VII. Events. Scope and Contents note

Series VII is dedicated to the events organized by the Club: award ceremonies, cast reception and suppers, and member-only social events. Most of this documentation is dated between the 1950s and the late 1990s, although a smaller portion of material from the 1920s to the 1940s is also included. In most cases, this material is organized chronologically and divided by event title. The same organizing principle is followed also in series X and XI (photographs and clippings), allowing researchers to collate more easily different documentation relating to the same events.

The main bulk of the series consists of the documentation about the awards organized annually by the Cushman Club: the Charlotte Cushman Award (1957-1994), the Fanny Kemble Award (1962-1968), and the Charlotte Cushman Scholarship Award (1970-1998). These folders include brochures, invitations, planning material, and correspondence with the awardees, including autograph letters from , Cornelia Otis Skinner, Ginger Rogers, Martyn Green, Judith Anderson, Peter Ustinov, Harry Rigby, and Lelia Barry.

The vast majority of these events are documented in the rich collection of posters included in the series, also organized chronologically and dating from 1966 to 1999. Because they provide an extensive list of

- Page 26 - Charlotte Cushman Club records VII. Events

the events organized by the Club over the years, the posters will offer a useful starting point for research around a given event.

VIII. Publicity and informational material on Charlotte Cushman Club. Scope and Contents note

Series VIII contains the informational material produced and issued by the Cushman Club to present itself to the general public. The series includes the Club’s fact sheets and publicity, along with their related preparatory material, and the documentation regarding the development of the Club’s web site in the 1990s. As a whole, this material provides useful information to reconstruct the history of the Club, and particularly of its first decades of activity.

IX. Library and museum materials. Scope and Contents note

Series IX gathers the documentation on the Club’s library and museum. It includes material on the administration and on the sales and acquisitions of new collectible items, as well as a list of inventories, a complete catalogue of the Club’s museum, the correspondence with scholars interested in Charlotte Cushman and on the Club’s holdings, and research material on Charlotte Cushman, on actor Joseph Jefferson’s Philadelphia house, and on Philadelphia theaters in general. Wherever possible, this documentation was arranged in chronological order.

The museum’s catalogue will help researchers gain insight into the Club’s collections prior to their dispersal in the late 1990s (further information on the former museum’s collections can also be found in the auction catalogue included in series III). On the expansion of the Club’s holdings over time, researchers are recommended to consult the correspondence on the donations and gifts to the Club

- Page 31 - Charlotte Cushman Club records IX. Library and museum materials

included in series VI, whereas the material on sales and acquisition that is part of this series, dating mostly from the 1980s, can be only of limited support. The research material on the Philadelphia theaters includes a typescript list of theatrical institutions opened in Philadelphia since 1724, which might have been written by Jean Rapp, chairwoman of the museum and library committee, in preparation to her unpublished volume “The Philadelphia Theatres” (series XIII).

X. Photographs. Scope and Contents note

Series X is dedicated to photographic material. Researchers can find in the series photographs of some of the Club’s board members, the various Club houses, and the many events organized by the Club from the 1930s to the 1990s. The material is arranged in chronological order, whereas events are organized by title to facilitate comparisons with other portions of the collection (especially series VII and XI).

The series includes photographs of several Club awardees, such as John Mielziner, Helen Menken, Beatrice Lillie, Cornelia Otis Skinner, Ginger Rogers, José Ferrer, Martyn Green, Judith Anderson, , Harry Rigby, John Houseman, Robert Morse, Zoe Caldwell, Olga Bellin, Keith Baxter, Ann Williams, Ralph Williams, Barbara Stanton, Ken Kercheval, Jennifer Hilary, James Luisi, Jean Hepple, Richard Benjamin, Alice Playton, and Hal Linden. Other events and exhibitions from the 1940s to the Club’s final years are also extensively covered. A collection of movie stills, and another group of portraits and autographed pictures are also part of the series.

XI. Clippings. Scope and Contents note

Series XI includes clippings and articles on the Club and its many events and exhibitions, but also on specific playwrights and other theatrical figures, as well as on cultural institutions theaters and shows in Philadelphia, the United States, and Europe.

The clippings relating to the Club’s awards (Charlotte Cushman Award, Fanny Kemble Award, and Charlotte Cushman Scholarship Award), as well as those covering the events hosted by the Club, are organized in chronological order for ease of comparison with other series. The extensive collection of articles on Philadelphia theaters, arranged alphabetically and dating from the 1940s to the 1970s, will be of interest to historians focusing on the city’s theatrical life in the late nineteenth and early twentieth century. Two distinct folders are respectively dedicated to the press review of the shows of Eugenia Rawls, an actress who visited the Club in many occasions, and on the sex reassignment surgery and following interracial marriage of writer Dawn Langley Simmons, who had long corresponded with the Club in the 1960s (see series V).

- Page 36 - Charlotte Cushman Club records XII. Scrapbooks

XII. Scrapbooks. Scope and Contents note

Series XII contains three different scrapbooks. The oldest of the three is also the most peculiar. Formerly a children’s book by English writer and translator Henry William Dulcken titled Animal Life All the World Over (1868) – whose original 83 pages are all still present in the binding – it was later turned into a scrapbook (possibly in the last decades of the 19th century) by pasting on the blank pages of the volume anecdotes, reviews of plays, obituaries, pictures, and autographs, including one by actor Edwin Forrest. The scrapbook also includes a carte de visite with a photograph of the bloodstained dress of actress Laura Keene, who supported President after he had been fatally shot at Ford’s Theatre (Washington, D.C.) by John Wilkes Booth in 1865.

The other two scrapbooks consist of a collection of portraits of actresses and actors and a series of theater articles and reviews. Because of the poor condition of the latter scrapbook, a copy is also included in the series and is to be preferred for consultation.

XIII. Manuscripts and scripts. Scope and Contents note

Series XIII includes scripts of articles and book and originals and copies of plays, as well as prompt books and production plans.

Historians focusing on Philadelphia’s theatrical life may be interested in consulting the unfinished script of Jean Rapp’s book “The Philadelphia Theaters” (1996), of which three different copies are included in the series along with another unpublished article on the same topic.

Typescripts include a copy of “Fit for Treason”, an unpublished play by George Ford – the son of impresario John Thompson Ford, who built the theatre in which president Abraham Lincoln was assassinated in 1865 – about the life of actor and Lincoln’s murderer John Wilkes Booth. Another unpublished play, written by Carol Wright Krause and based on the life of Charlotte Cushman, is also part of the series. Typescript or printed copies of published plays include the fantasy in one act The Pierrot of the Minute by Ernest Dowson, The Affected Young Ladies by Molière, and a collection of plays by Florence Converse, Lord Dansany and Wilbur Daniel Steele. The series also comprises two manuscript copies of published works: an incomplete 1845 copy of the play Michael Erle by Thomas Elgerton Wilks, and an arrangement of the text to Amorita, the English version of a 1884 German operetta entitled Pfingsten im Florenz (music by Alphons Czibulka, original text by Richard Genee and Julius Riegen). A nineteenth-century copy of the cautionary North-American folk ballad "Young Charlotte," accompanied by a typewritten transcription of the song, is also part of the series.

Researchers can also find material relating to the production of the play Royal Gambit by Herrmann Gressieker, and to other two productions of the Plays & Players Theatre – William Shakespeare’s The Merchant of Venice (1946) and Robinson Jeffers’ Medea (1960).

XIV. Playbills, programs, and brochures. Box 15-17 Scope and Contents note

Series XIV comprises around 160 theatrical playbills and programs, along with exhibitions catalogues and checklists, and brochures relating to special events, theaters, and other cultural institutions.

The many playbills and programs are arranged in chronological order and divided according to their provenance – Philadelphia, other cities in the United States, and European countries (England, Ireland, Scotland, France, Germany, Austria, and Italy). Highlights include performances featuring actresses and actors Fanny Kemble, Helena Modjeska, Fanny Janauschek, Tommaso Salvini, Ada Rehan, Richard Mansfield, Ellen Terry, Paul Robeson, and Eugenia Rawls, singers Jenny Lind and Fortunata Tedesco, dancer Anna Pavlova, and many other internationally famous artists and performers.

Exhibition checklist and catalogues mainly concern Philadelphia events or other exhibitions in the United States to which the Club lent items from its collection. Brochures about theaters are arranged alphabetically and are mostly relating to American institutions.

XIX. Artifacts. Scope and Contents note

Series XIX includes two wooden toy theaters and a small collection of accompanying characters and stage sets. Most of this material was coriginally donated to the Club by Philadelphia banker and collector Frank S. Stone. The first toy theater was built in the second half of the nineteenth century by Charles Boucher, master carpenter at the Academy of Music of Philadelphia, while the other was manufactured in 1883 by New York-based toy company J. H. Singer. The series also includes three complete sets of characters and scenes, also published by J. H. Singer, along with another set for Boucher’s theater, and additional scenes on wood and canvas. Mostly in good condition, this material allows for a direct examination of a popular form of domestic entertainment of the late Victorian era.
