Boosters from outside sources are necessary, The Library Development Program collected these boosters: $23,029.12 and 5,081 books during the year and a half covered by this Report; $58,39l.01 and 18,595 books since the Program was begun four years ago. This provides only 5 percent of the books that should be added yearly. But this 5 percent is most important since it is in addition to what could otherwise be provided. Ir, Gifts and Grants Library Development is an important part of the rary Development general University Development Program. Any contri Giving bution - for example, to the Annual Giving Program or irs to the Century Club - can be earmarked for the Li braries. Every dollar given will go to buy books, with a bookplate in each book (unless otherwise directed) show ing the name of the donor.

William H , Jesse The fact that so many of the names in our Third Director oj Libraries Report of the Library Development Program were also in the first two reports will, I know, make you as happy as it makes me, for it indicates that our friends KNOW a fine library is essential to graduate study and research, which in turn are the keys to tomorrow. They realize that UT's graduate school, now the largest in all the South between Washington, D. C. and Texas, needs the books and serials which their generous and recurring gifts (in addition to large State appropriations) are supplying for uninterrupted and continuing growth.

I think, and I know you agree, that if we here at the University are indeed moving toward educational excellence, are truly "reaching for greatness," we owe nruch to our generous alumni and friends who are helping us reach that enviable state by giving and then giving again and again and again.

Sincerely yours, 9Lc-£.... e_ {;!>hn C. Hodges, for Library Dever

In June, 1962, The University of Tennessee Library was signally honored by being invited to join the As sociation of Research Libraries, the most exclusive of the library professional groups. Membership is open on invitation only, to "major university libraries," which are "those whose parent institutions emphasize research and graduate instruction at the doctoral level and which support large, comprehensive collections of library materials on a permanent basis." U-T, one of three university libraries in the South which were in vited to join the Association, was proud to accept, feel ing that the invitation itself indicated general recogni tion of U-T's forward surge toward becoming a true research facility, and that, with the support received from the Library Development Program's contributors, U-T will be able to make at least a creditable showing beside the elite of the library world.

The Knoxville book collection is located in the main library building (the James D. Hoskins Library) and in seven branch libraries.

In Memphis, the Mooney Memorial Library serves the Medical Units. It contains 58,260 books and subscribes to over 1,000 periodicals.

The College Library at Martin includes in its hold ings many audio-visual aids, such as microtext, films, and sound recordings.

The Extension Division Libraries are located in the centers in Memphis, Knoxville, and Nashville.

There are three distinguishing marks of a Uni versity; a group of students, a corps of instruc tors, and a collection of books; and of these three the most important is the collection of books .

Chauncey Brewster Tinker Yale University, 1924 ...:;::-~ ·O~~~~:~ :::=-::;~...::- ...... _._ :.::=:;:~

The most important thing about any library is just the fact that a book can wait there until someone to whom it has something important. perhaps something crucial, to say pulls it down . And one of the most important characteristics of the book itself is just that, unlike a television program, moving picture, or any other "modern means of communication," it can wait for years, yet be available at any moment when it happens to be needed.
