Hayward Dining Guide

Restaurants, Eateries, Coffee & More

Welcome to the City of Hayward!

Sharing a meal with family and friends is a social event and when the food is really good, a celebration. The diversity of restaurants in Hayward reflects this community and acknowledges the many cultures thriving in the ‘Heart of the Bay.’ Going to a new restaurant is one of the easiest and fun ways to try something new: It’s the exotic without the airfare, the comfort without the commitment, the fallback when the refrigerator is empty. Please use this guide to support our local restaurants and economy. If you have any additions or changes, please contact the City’s Economic Development Department by calling 510‐583‐5540 or by emailing Economic.Development@hayward‐ca.gov. Enjoy!

Did you know? The first donut machine was invented in New York City in 1920. During World War I, homesick soldiers in France were served donuts by Salvation Army volunteers to boost morale. The Guinness World Record for most doughnuts eaten at one sitting is 49 donuts in eight minutes. The U.S. alone makes over 10 billion donuts a year. June 7th is National Donut Day.

Delis came to New York as the population of German and Eastern European Jews fled religious and social oppression by immigrating to the between 1900 and 1938. As New York City was the point‐of‐entry for these immigrants, many stayed. Initially these delis and the other area restaurants were kept “Kosher,” but as people from other parts of the city took to the idea, many non‐ Kosher delis began to appear.

It’s hard to imagine without drive‐through windows. Drive‐throughs existed in the 1930s, and many drive‐in restaurants had some form of drive‐up window. However, the speaker systems commonly used to place drive‐through orders didn’t hit the scene until the 1950s. The double drive‐through, used by many busy fast‐food restaurants, debuted in the 1980s.

Comfort food is a traditionally‐eaten food or simply provides the consumer with an easy‐to‐digest meal, soft in consistency, rich in calories and nutrients, or both. The nostalgic element of most comfort food may be specific to either the individual or a specific culture. Many comfort foods are flavorful; some may also be easily prepared.

Rice noodles are the second most common rice product used in Asia, behind rice grains. Regular pasta, or enriched spaghetti, is more common in the United States. Regular pasta has more nutrients than rice noodles; however, rice noodles do not contain gluten, which makes them a good choice for people with gluten sensitivities or celiac disease.
