DELIVERED TO HOMES IN IN THIS ISSUE LYMPNE, LYMPNE AIRFIELD SURVEY LYMPNE NEWINGREEN, RESULTS, PARISH COUNCILLOR COURT-AT VACANCY,SPEEDWATCH UPDATE, NEWSLETTER STREET AND HOUSEHOLD WASTE WEST HYTHE AND MUCH MORE AUGUST 2021 ROAD LYMPNE AIRFIELD MEMORIAL PARK—SURVEY RESULTS We would like to thank everyone who has completed the online survey and taken the time to write to the Parish Council with their comments about the proposed project. As a reminder, the project known as L.A.M.P. has been proposed after an offer in 2018 by Homes England the current owners of the Airfield for the Parish Council to tenant part of the land. The offer at the time was rejected at a public meeting held in the Village Hall for two main reasons 1. The length of the tenure and 2. the size of the plot being offered. Since then the Parish Council have been negotiating with the owners to meet the wishes of the public meeting. The idea of creating an area for the village and visitors to remember the history of the site and to support the varied wildlife seems to have hit a positive note with the owners and this prompted the issue of the survey to see what support there may be from the village. The Parish Council in no way condone the use of the field which is official private land, but realise that many people use it for walking and exercise. The survey closes on the 31st July and this article was written on the 27th July. 72 people completed the survey on line and several people contacted the Council via email– The survey consisted of 8 questions which asked people to make their comments or answer direct questions-

Q1– Asked if you were a resident of Lympne Parish 71 replied yes 1 replied no Q2- Do you use Lympne Airfield and if so how often– This prompted various replies ranging from walking the dogs, running for fitness and walking through the area, for studying the history. Three people replied that they did not use it. 6 replies stated they used to use the area but had been deterred by the fences and erection of the trespassing signs.1 Person did not know the area existed. Q3– Asked if you would give support to creating a memorial park and wildlife area– 71 people responded to this question with 91.5% (65) saying yes and 8.5% (6) saying no. Q4– was a call for volunteers should the project become a reality– 29 replied yes 29 replied maybe and 12 replied no ( 2 people left this question blank) Some people who replied mentioned their health would stop them from getting involved but they would be happy to help in other ways. Q5– asked for contact details Q6- said the following- The aim is to raise money through funding; however would you be happy for the Parish Council to spend Public money in support of this project if necessary? - 66 people replied yes, 5 replied no and 1 left this reply blank.

Q7– Asked if the project was successful how likely would you be to visit – 62 replied very likely, 3 likely 2 likely/unlikely 2 unlikely and 3 very unlikely. SERVICING, MOT’S, BRAKES, CLUTCHES, TIMING BELTS Q8– Gave those completing the survey the opportunity AIR CONDITIONING, TYRES, WHEEL ALIGNMENT & VEHICLE ELECTRICS to give their opinions on the project. This part of the survey generated both positive and negative comments. FOR ALL MAKES OF VEHICLE It also included some excellent suggestions about what VOLKSWAGEN GROUP SPECIALIST should or should not be included and ways of saving SEAT SKODA AUDI VOLKSWAGEN money on the costs. There were lots of comments about COLLECTION AND DELIVERY SERVICE AVAILABLE community areas, preventing development and support for protecting the heritage and wildlife. LYMPNE AIRFIELD HISTORY SOCIETY We live in strange times and until that uncertainty can be removed it remains to be seen when we can again hold presentation evenings at Lympne Castle. So once again I take another look into the Lympne Airfield history archive. This time household name, aviator Amy Johnson CBE is in this month’s spotlight as we look at her visits to Lympne Airfield. Amy Johnson at Lympne By John Simpson Born in Hull in 1903, Amy Johnson became world famous after her solo flight from the UK to in 1930, the first woman to do so. Her point of departure was Croydon on 5th March, but Lympne would become an alternative starting point for some later flights. After much adulation and interest in her achievements flying to Australia, Amy returned to the UK on 4th August by Imperial Airways and the plan to land first at Lympne had to be abandoned in bad weather, so refuelling took place at Brussels instead before returning to Croydon three hours late and a civic reception at the Grosvenor House Hotel in . On the 1st January 1931 she next set out for China from Stag Lane in west London in her DH Gipsy Moth Jason III, before a refuelling stop at Lympne, but was forced to abandon this attempt near Warsaw. On February 2nd she escorted another famous female pilot, Mrs Victor Bruce, from Lympne to Croydon as she arrived back from the USA. The next day Amy flew from Lympne to Rouen in France, returning the next day. Her next major flight was made with co-pilot Jack Humphreys from Lympne to in DH Puss Moth Jason II in 21 hours. They then flew on to . Lympne was again her starting point as she set off for on 14th November 1932. She was now married to fellow aviator . This flight beat his record to Cape Town by ten hours as she took DH80 Puss Moth Desert Cloud the 6300 miles to the city in 4 days, 10 hours 28 minutes. The next February she would wave off Mollison to Brazil as he set out from Lympne chasing another record. She would go on to make more flights with Mollison and solo, before divorcing him in August 1938. These included a near fatal crash landing in Connecticut with him en route to in 1933 and another attempt to reach Melbourne with Mollison in DH88 Comet Racer Black Magic in 1934. The flight was abandoned at with fuel problems. Another record braking flight to Cape Town followed in May 1936, this time from Gravesend. Sadly Amy would go on to make her last flight whilst serving in the or ATA in January 1941. Her ill fated flight in a twin engine Airspeed set out from Blackpool in freezing fog for Kidlington, Oxfordshire. Hopelessly lost, with no radio, she took to her parachute as she reached the limit of fuel. She was by this time over the Thames Estuary, where she could not be plucked to safety aboard HMS Haslemere in time and drowned in freezing water. L/C Walter Fletcher was also lost that day as he took to the water to try to help ‘another person’ in the water. This was thought to be her bag! He is buried in the Woodlands cemetery in Gillingham. The body of Amy Johnson was never found. For more information about Lympne Airfield History Society, please contact John Simpson on 01303 265078 or email [email protected]
