They had crossed the desert with a strange load of equipment described with some creativity to customs officials, they were American, and one of them stood 6’8” tall. The team was there on a technological aid mission of sorts, aiming to digitize the pages of ancient manuscripts for preservation, and to reveal secret texts hidden for centuries. They were hoping that the men outside the monastery, the ones from the Egyptian government speaking Arabic into walkie-talkies, weren’t going to interfere. We listened to the radio, watched television and read newspapers,” he says. “We just had to do it all at the same time.” Eventually, he shifted to working on satellites for NASA and the Department of Defense, even supporting a classified space shuttle mission in 1989, which meant a welcome chance to spend time in Florida, where he Toth in 2009 at Egypt’s Janub Sinai Mountains grew up. 1 Photo: Alex Hurst REDUX This Redux box set is on the 30 Hertz Records label, which I started in 1997. Many of the tracks on this box set originated on 30 Hertz. I did have a label in the early eighties called Lago, on which I released some of my first solo records. These were re-released on 30 Hertz Records in the early noughties. 30 Hertz Records was formed in order to give me a refuge away from the vagaries of corporate record companies. It was one of the wisest things I have ever done. It meant that, within reason, I could commission myself to make whatever sort of record took my fancy. For a prolific artist such as myself, it was a perfect situation. No major record company would have allowed me to have released as many albums as I have. At the time I formed the label, it was still a very rigid business; you released one album every few years and ‘toured it’ in the hope that it became a blockbuster. On the other hand, my attitude was more similar to most painters or other visual artists. I always have one or two records on the go in the same way they always have one or two paintings in progress. My feeling has always been to let the music come, document it by releasing it then let the world catch up in its own time. Hopefully, my new partnership with Cherry Red means that Redux signifies a new beginning as well as documenting the past.

Absolutely crushing. A wonderful reminder of what it once meant to be in a genuinely dangerous and groundbreaking group. Utterly essential for The Fall fan in your life. Humorous and engaging. Mar 06, Jay Green rated it liked it. Hanley suffers; all The Fall suffers. One of the best books on music I've read in a long time. Other editions. Also a shout out to Colin, their Scottish roadie, whose proclamations Hanley writes phonetically, very funny. Following along and listening to their discography chronologically while reading was a revelation - would have appreciated an epilogue, though! Mainly this was because of the personality of Mark Edward Smith, one of the more obtuse characters to emerge from the nexus of northern punk. There are priceless Smith quotes that sound verbatim to anyone familiar with his turn of phrase. No trivia or quizzes yet. Nice to see Marc Riley come out of it well. The Fall always give you something other than what you expect: this superb book is just another example of this from the sufficiently, occasionally sober bassist who lived to tell the tale.
