Oxford Ave, Los Angeles, CA 90029 A Letter From the Artistic Director Is everything forgivable? Is anything forgiven? How do we forgive? How do we each nd our way out of the past to a present where our lives are meaningful? Welcome to Oliver Cotton’s Daytona. is play is a symphony of love, betrayal, promise and regret – of exile and the need for redemption. Every moment is and is not what it is. What happens to love and promise born in an age of horror? Does the experience of true evil stay with us forever? Does it color everything else ever felt? What does it cost to free oneself? To remain captive? What happens when you sacrice what may be the one true thing - the love of your life? Or when you stay to love not knowing if you are the one true thing? Life is action – what happens. We spend our lives – each and every day – giving or not giving to one another. Forgiveness may be a gift. Redemption can only be found in the mirror. is year, Rogue Machine is honored to receive the 2016 Los Angeles Drama Critics Circle Polly Wareld Award for Outstanding Season in an Intimate or Midsized eatre. eatre is art and art can only exist as a communication between artist and community. eatre shows what is – who we are, what we are, what we do, what we think is important. ese are the lies we tell each other and ourselves. is is the way our actions expose those lies. If our work, our art, is good enough, sometimes those experiencing the work gasp or guaw. at’s why we do it. You make us possible. If you enjoy what you see tonight, please tell your friends. Word-of-mouth is always the best advertising. We are a not-for-prot arts organization and your donations are tax-deductible. ey allow us to keep theater aordable and to continue doing what we’re doing. e world is changing. e need for institutions like Rogue Machine has never been greater and our survival has never been more precarious. If you are already a part of who we are, thank you. Keep coming and keep donating. If not, please consider becoming a part of this community. • Jewish Lawyers on Television Michael Asimow1
Journal of the Oxford Centre for Socio-Legal Studies | Issue 2, 2017 Jewish Lawyers on Television Michael Asimow1 n a 1971 episode of All in the Family,2 Archie Bunker has an auto accident with a Jewish woman driver. After spouting his usual anti-Semitic opinions, Archie realizes that he can I fake a back injury and make some real money. Clearly, this requires a smart but crooked lawyer. Archie and his son-in-law start leafing through the yellow pages looking for one and find Rabinowitz, Rabinowitz, & Rabinowitz. That’s it! But the Rabinowitz firm sends over Whitney Fitzhugh IV, its token gentile. Archie throws him out and cries “Bring me a Jew!” Sol Rabinowitz soon arrives, but the case falls apart when witnesses (a station wagon full of nuns) declare that the accident was Archie’s fault. Norman Lear’s inspired idea for All in the Family (1971-1979) was to put all sorts of bigotry and right wing political slogans into the mouth of the buffoon Archie Bunker as a way of ridiculing those opinions.3 In this episode, Lear was parodying the stereotypes surrounding Jewish lawyers—they are greedy, unethical, and more cunning than other lawyers. Fortunately, the anti-Semitic stereotypes that Lear lampooned in 1971 no longer exist, correct? Well, not so fast. This article identifies about a dozen Jewish lawyers who have appeared as regular characters on fictional television dramas from the 1980s to the present. 4 Most of these representations occur in lawyer shows, but some are drawn from other genres, such as soap operas or police shows.
