  • Ben Salisbury
Craft / Geoff Barrow of Portishead with Ben Salisbury quite dry, quite traditional. I was expecting it might be like ‘The Kids from Fame’. But they weren’t, the vast majority of students wanted to be music teachers! The benefit was there was a brand new recording studio at Newcastle University, and there was only me and one other guy who were interested in using it, so we had the run of it. It was absolutely state-of-the- art, when samplers and digital stuff were just taking off. So that was really my introduction into composing. Music for Film and TV at Bournemouth in the early ’90s was a brilliant course, in that you had your own workstation. You were sat down, you had deadlines, and it was quite pressurised, so was actually quite similar to life as a commercial composer. Weirdly, that was probably exactly the same time Geoff [Barrow] was using samplers to make Portishead’s Dummy. What was your first real break? I came out of Bournemouth with a credit to my name, because I did music for a short film that went on to win an award, and was broadcast on Channel Four. It was directed by a guy called Ben Salisbury Miguel Sapochnik who I’ve worked with since on other short films. Now he directs episodes of DAVE ROBINSON meets the nature documentary composer Game of Thrones! One person, that’s all it took: one director who has his (laser) sights on sci-fi chose a bit of music I’d done for that film as temp music for his film about elephants and en Salisbury is a name you can expect Your father worked at the BBC Natural said, “Look, you’re very inexperienced, but to see more and more of on your History Unit: that must have been useful to we’ve got this music in there.

Challinor: An Examination of General Roles in An Examination of Gender Roles in The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert by Lauren Challinor (English 1154) he Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert, a 1994 film directed by Stephan Elliott, is a campy movie-musical with a poignant plot, following two transvestites and a trans-woman on T a journey through the Australian outback in a tour-bus they christened Priscilla, travelling from cosmopolitan Sydney to the remote outpost of Alice Springs in the heart of the continent. My focus in this essay shall be to explore the personal journey of each of the three main characters, as well as their interactions with each other and other characters throughout the film, through the lens of shifting gender roles and gender role behaviors. As a source, I refer to an article published in 1998, authored under the name Holly Devor, and entitled ―Gender Role Behaviors and Attitudes‖.

I am grateful to the NHS for still being on this planet, long may its existence also continue. Tim Moore, stepson and good friend must also be thanked for his digital wizardry. Finally, I am immensely grateful to my wife Joyce for her valued help in checking all my final drafts and the manner in which she has encouraged me along the years of my research; standing right beside me as she has always done when I have faced other challenging issues.

  • Carice Van Houten | Biography
Carice van Houten | Biography One of Europe's most celebrated actresses, CARICE VAN HOUTEN is best known for her role as The Red Priestess Melisandre in HBO and Sky Atlantic’s GAME OF THRONES, for which she has been thrice nominated as a part of the ‘Outstanding Ensemble’ at the Screen Actors Guild Awards for the multi-award-winning series. Carice was most recently seen alongside Dakota Fanning, Guy Pearce and Kit Harrington in Martin Koolhoven’s western epic BRIMSTONE which was nominated for the Golden Lion award at the Venice Film Festival and as Best Film at the London Film Festival. The film was called out by The Independent as “raw and very powerful filmmaking, a movie that can’t help but get under your skin.” Carice is a multi-award-winner in her native Holland with acclaimed roles spanning across film and television. Her Dutch-language feature LOVE LIFE, based on the best-selling novel by Ray Kluun, gained Carice further critical acclaim for her performance as ‘Carmen’, a mother whose world falls apart as she deals with both her cancer diagnosis and serial adulterer husband. The award-winning film broke box office records in the country. She attracted international attention with her lead role in Paul Verhoeven's acclaimed wartime thriller BLACK BOOK - the most commercially successful Dutch film to date. The BAFTA nominated film centres on ‘Rachel Stein’, played by Van Houten, a Jewish singer who infiltrates the Gestapo headquarters for the Dutch resistance in the Nazi occupied Netherlands during World War II. Carice’s turn as Rachel “with ferocious energy” was commended by The New York Times.

Short Synopsis After a single-mother (Carice van Houten) witnesses terrifying symptoms of demonic possession in her 11-year-old son (David Mazouz), a Vatican representative (Catalina Sandino Moreno) calls on wheelchair-bound scientist Dr. Seth Ember (Aaron Eckhart) to rid him of the evil spirit. Driven by a personal agenda rooted in his own tragic past, Ember enters the boy’s unconscious mind where he confronts a demon as ferocious as it is ingenious. Long Synopsis Eleven-year-old Cameron (David Mazouz) alarms his single mother Lindsay (Carice van Houten) when he begins isolating himself on the floor of his dark room, speaking in ancient languages and displaying other symptoms of demonic possession. Alerted to the situation, Vatican representative Camilla (Catalina Sandino Moreno) recruits wheelchair- bound scientist Dr. Seth Ember (Aaron Eckhart) to extract the evil spirit from the boy. A non-believer who drinks, smokes and prefers to think of his work as “eviction” rather than exorcism, Ember sets up shop with high-tech assistants Riley (Emily Jackson) and Oliver (Keir O’Donnell). Strapped into a life-support system, he enters Cameron’s subconscious mind, where the demon holds the boy captive in an imaginary dream world by appealing to his deepest desire: to be reunited with his estranged father Dan (Matt Nable). Driven by tragic events in his own traumatic past, Ember engages in a fierce battle with the crafty spirit. Ever mindful that the demon, known as “Maggie,” travels from one victim to the next through physical contact, Ember knows that his desperate attempt to save Cameron’s soul could make him the demon’s next host.
