ABSTRACT Kashmir, commonly known as the “heaven on earth” always been the abode of many Rishis, mystics, saints and Sufis. One of the most celebrated and adored of the Sufi saints that Kashmir produced towards the end of fourteenth century Sheikh Nuruddin wali (r.a) who played such an important role not only in establishing and popularising the but also in the Islamisation of Kashmir. Besides, the staunch follower of Sufism, he played an innovative role to restore peace in the valley and with his sheer desperation he spreads the message of peace, love and harmony among people of Kashmir. He is also remembered as the founder of Rishi Movement in Kashmir which was mainly active from the 14th to 17th century and it is for this reason Kashmir is also called as Rishwaer-the valley of Rishis. Sheikh ul Alam journeyed throughout distant areas of Kashmir and met saints, scholars and common people. His poetry in the form of Shruks bears a distinct impact upon Kashmir society. Sheikh ul Alam is portrayed not only as a venerated Sufi but also a supporter of lower castes. Performing some ascetic exercises Sheikh lived in a cave in the village of in . He subsisted on wild spinach and leaves. Sheikh ul Alam tried his best to mend society for betterment. Like Sufis Sheikh ul Alam used regional language for disseminating his message to common people. Although Sheikh ul Alam is confined to Kashmir only but his message is universal. The paper in study substantiates the contribution and impact of a renowned sufi saint Sheikh ul Alam in Kashmir.
