The Lions have nine wrestlers ranked in the latest InterMat individual rankings: Roman Bravo-Young, 3rd at 133; Nick Lee, 2nd at 141; Jarod Verkleeren, 10th Beau Bartlett, 141/149 0-0 at 149; Brady Berge, 11th at 157; Joe Lee, 6th at 165; Carter Starocci, 5th at 174; Aaron Brooks, 3rd at 184; Michael Michael Beard, 197 0-0 Beard, 13th at 197; Greg Kerkvliet, 5th at 285. Brady Berge, 157 0-0 Northwestern will enter the weekend with a 1-2 record. The Wildcats are coming off a 1-1 weekend in a tri-dual, having Joey Blumer, 141/149 0-0 beaten Maryland 21-12 and lost to Nebraska 26-10. Northwestern opened its season with a 28-8 loss to Purdue. Keagan Carmenatty, 197/285 0-0 Aurelius Dunbar, 157/165 0-0 Indiana was off last weekend and is 0-2 on the year. The Hoosiers have lost to Illinois (39-3) and Michigan (32-6) so far this season. Indiana has one ranked wrestler, Brock Hudkins, who is 16th at 125. Creighton Edsell, 165/174 0-0 David Evans, 133/141 0-0 Penn State owns a 20-0-1 lead in the all-time series with Indiana, including seven straight victories. HEAD COACH CAEL SANDERSON THE PENN STATE YEARS Cael’s fi rst season at Penn State was solid. Sanderson led Penn State to a 13-6-1 dual meet record, much improved over the prior year’s 8-12-2 mark. After a year outside the top 10, Sanderson led the Lions back to their place among the nation’s elite with a ninth-place fi nish at the NCAA Championships and a No. 10 fi nal dual meet ranking from the NWCA Coaches. Sanderson picked up three more All-Americans (including a national fi nalist) and a Big Ten Champion in younger brother, Cyler Sanderson. In 2010-11, Sanderson reached the pinnacle of the collegiate coaching mountain by guiding Penn State through a stunning season fi lled with records, championships and memories that thrilled the Penn State faithful. Sanderson led the Nittany Lions to their fi rst-ever Southern Scuffl e Co-Championship and fi rst Virginia Duals Championship since 1991. While guiding Penn State to a 6-1-1 conference mark, Sanderson equaled the highest Big Ten dual meet wins in Penn State history (1998). He led Penn State to the school’s fi rst ever Big Ten Championship and was named 2011 Big Ten Coach of the Year. He became the fi rst coach in NCAA history to be named both the Big Ten and Big 12 Coach of the Year.

    DIVISION I WRESTLING CHAMPIONSHIPS RECORDS BOOK 2016 Championships 2 History 14 Team Finishes 28 All-Time Team Results 34 2016 CHAMPIONSHIPS Penn State, Oklahoma State's Dieringer highlight final day of NCAA Championships at Madison Square Garden: March 19 was a night of firsts, seconds, and thirds inside Madison Square Garden. And it ended in dramatic fashion. In the 2016 NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships’ final match after three days of grueling competition inside a legendary arena, Ohio State’s Kyle Snyder used an ankle-pick with eight seconds left to force overtime with North Carolina State’s Nick Gwiazdowski, then score another takedown 15 seconds into the first extra session to end the Wolfpack senior’s 88-match winning streak. Gwiazdowski’s bid for a third title was thwarted, but another senior, Oklahoma State’s Alex Dieringer, finished his career with 82 straight victories and a third national title. Illinois’ Isaiah Martinez won his second championship at 157 pounds. Gabe Dean, a junior for Cornell, picked up his second gold. Missouri’s multi-talented J’den Cox claimed his second in three years. Penn State’s Nico Megaludis and Cornell’s Nahshon Garrett, after long and successful careers, finished in style with their first titles. Oklahoma State’s Dean Heil and Penn State’s Zain Retherford, both sophomores, claimed championship number one, as did Snyder. And underdog Myles Martin, an Ohio State freshman from nearby Penns Grove, New Jersey, had the highlight of the night in beating Penn State’s Bo Nickal. Locked up, both men ready to strike, Nickal tried to turn an ankle-pick into two.

Three-time NCAA Champion wins wrestling’s Heisman UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa.; April 1, 2019 – (Portion of release, including quotes, courtesy Bryan Van Kley, WIN Magazine) Penn State Nittany Lion wrestler Bo Nickal (Allen, Texas) has won the WIN Magazine/Culture House Dan Hodge Trophy, presented annually to the top collegiate wrestler in the nation by ASICS. The Hodge Trophy has been awarded since 1995. The three-time NCAA champion finished first in the voting, just ahead of teammate Jason Nolf (Yatesboro, Pa.). A Nittany Lion has now won the last three Hodge Trophy awards. Nickal joins former Nittany Lion greats Zain Retherford and David Taylor, who each claimed two Hodge Trophy honors, and former Lion stand-out Kerry McCoy, who won the honor in 1997, as Penn State recipients. In all, Penn State now has four different individuals who have won the honor six times. The Nittany Lion won his third NCAA championship on March 23, defeating Kollin Moore of Ohio State. The 5-1 finals victory at 197 pounds was Nickal’s 30th of an undefeated senior campaign that included 18 pins, three tech falls and six major decisions. In a year that featured four outstanding finalists for the award, known as “wrestling’s Heisman Trophy,” Nickal won the honor over a senior teammate Jason Nolf, also a three-time NCAA champ who had very similar stats as Nickal. The other two Hodge finalists were Rutgers’ senior Anthony Ashnault and Cornell sophomore two-time champ Yianni Diakomihalis, who won NCAA championships at 149 and 141 pounds, respectively.

The Nittany Lions and Sun Devils will meet in sold out Rec Hall on Friday, Dec. 14, at 6 p.m. in a dual that will air live nationally on ESPN2. Arizona State has made a trip to Happy Valley, however, competing in the BJC in the National Duals. All rankings listed are InterMat/InterMat TPI as of Dec. 11. Penn State is coming off a pair of dual victories two weekends ago. The Nittany Lions won nine of ten bouts in a 42-3 win at Bucknell on Nov. 30, the first-ever trip for Penn State at Lewisburg. The dual was wrestled in front of a Bucknell wrestling-record crowd of 4.279, the third-largest in Stojka Pavilion history. Two days later, the Nittany Lions shut-out No. 10 Lehigh 42-0, winning all ten bouts against the short-handed Mountain Hawks in front of yet another Rec Hall sellout crowd. Penn State got ranked wins from Mark Hall at 174, Bo Nickal at 197 and Anthony Cassar at 285. The Nittany Lions sport a balanced and talented line-up: Sophomore Devin Schnupp is 4-3 at 125, having won his last two dual outings.

    FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: May 11, 2017 CoSIDA Academic All-District™ Men’s At-Large Team Released The 2016-17 College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Academic All-District™ Men’s At-Large Team has been released to recognize the nation’s top student-athletes for their combined performances athletically and in the classroom. The Academic All-District™ teams include the student-athletes listed on the following pages and are divided into eight geographic districts across the United States and Canada. This is the sixth year of the expanded Academic All-America® program as CoSIDA moved from recognizing a University Division (Division I) and a College Division (all non-Division I) and has doubled the number of scholar-athletes honored. The expanded teams include NCAA Division I, NCAA Division II and NCAA Division III participants, while the College Division Academic All-America® Team combines NAIA, Canadian and two-year schools.
