The Jails and the Women Prisoners As They Exist……
CHAPTER - 1 THE JAILS AND THE WOMEN PRISONERS AS THEY EXIST……. The state of Punjab is a prosperous region known for its industrious and hardworking people. But even as these tall well built people cope with numerous specific regional problems, accept changes and grow in a global world – the glaring fact that needs specific attention, is the growing incidence of crime and even more so - the growing incidence of crime committed by women. The changing nature and patterns of these crimes require serious consideration. Most jails had little or no provisions for women to start with - later some arrangements were made to accommodate them. With the increase in women prisoners in each jail the area of confinement is deficient in many ways. Taking up the region of Punjab, which is the focus of the present study, we find that all the prisons located in the various parts of Punjab do not have provisions to keep women prisoners. Only the District and Central jails, which are eight in number, have some provisions to keep women prisoners. There is one exclusive jail for women at Ludhiana, which houses only women prisoners. Once convicted, the women from all the other eight jails are supposed to be sent to this jail. However, a large number of under- trails are also lodged here. Women are under detention in the dowry act cases, drug trafficking- NDPS act, excise act, theft, murders due to family disputes and illicit relationships. A majority of the women prisoners belong to the lower socio-economic strata, a few to the lower middle class and a very few belong to the middle middle class strata of society. -

There are tons of them out there already. In fact, you can walk in to most bookstores and find them on the shelves varying from $7 to $24 for the larger collections. The problem, though, is not everyone can afford to shell out even $7 to experience new poetry and fiction. Also, many (but not all) of these journals are inaccessible to new and emerging writer making it difficult for new writers to be heard. With these two problems in mind Angel City Review was born. We are dedicated to providing cutting edge poetry and fiction for free on a twice-yearly basis in eBook format. Our goal is to be inclusive to writers of all backgrounds, whether they went to college, or never took a single creative writing class. There will also never be reader fees. Every issue will be anchored by a few more established names (with this issue being a little heavier on that end) but writers who you may not have even heard of yet will carry the brunt of it. This has been a long and arduous process and I hope you enjoy what you find inside. Los Angeles has a rich and diverse literary culture that is waiting to be tapped into and we plan to share that with you for many years to come. -

It describes that part of the film industry with colorful, exaggerated, overly dramatic, music-and-dance-filled characteristics rather than this nation’s entire film making. In contrast to Hollywood, from which it takes its tongue-in-cheek name, Bollywood is no actual place; rather, it is the term that best describes a style of film making. Bollywood style in its broadest meaning is the mass media vehicle for entertainment that feeds some of the amusement needs of a population with a variety of languages and ethnic/caste backgrounds. Themes are simple and predictable for the most part, with a great degree of flexibility in the telling of even the most well known story in order to make a relevant point on a particular issue or current event. -

Phulkari Baghs of the Punjab: Another Perspective

SOURCE: THE IMPERIAL GAZETTEER OF INDIA (1907-1909) HTTP://DSAL.UCHICAGO>EDU/ lthough the most recognised of South A Asian embroidery there is curiously little scholarship available about the deeper meanings of phulkari chadars or shawls. Phulkari, literally translated as ‘flower’ (phul) and ‘work’ (kari), is used to describe several different styles of cloths historically made in the region of Punjab that today comprise the states of Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh in northern India, and the Punjab province of Pakistan including parts of Swat and Hazara. Within the hierarchy of phulkaris, baghs (literally ‘gardens’) were the most prestigious and precious. Created over many years to become family heirlooms, baghs were embroidered in silk floss covering the entire base khaddar (cotton) material. They were created by women within their own families, for wearing and presenting on auspicious religious occasions and as markers of significant life events such as marriages and births. Made by Hindu, Sikh and Muslim women they were never intended to be made or sold for a market or gifted to outsiders. The holding aloft of a bagh above of the embroidered fabric. Country and Sector Background Country Context 1. Pakistan’s population exceeds 180 million with over 60% living in rural areas. The United Nations Human Development Report of 2011 puts Pakistan in “low human development category” ranking 145 out of 187 countries. The current social and political unrest, conflict and economic downturn in Pakistan have had an impact on the development and economic growth initiatives of the country. Men, women and youth have few employment opportunities at the Public Disclosure Authorized local level, which has led to internal displacement, forced migration, crowding of urban centers, and increased political and social instability. 2. The Government of Pakistan seeks to restore the country’s economic growth rate to between 5 and 7 percent per year by stimulating growth and creating employment opportunities. Looking at the composition of employment within the country, while agriculture dominates the formal sector, crafts and related trades comprise 15 percent of formal sector employment, coming third behind unskilled labor. In the informal sector, crafts and related trades provide 31 percent of the jobs, of which 54 percent are filled by women. -

The traditional handicrafts of different types made from plant waste materials available in their vacinity were used in every household during the pre-independence period. Doaba and Majha were faster to adapt to the modern life style, while Malwa region with low literacy level continued with the traditional ways of life as well as craft making. But over the last two decades practice of handicraft making had sharp decline even in Malwa region. Thus, to document the valuable basketry craft, a sample of 180 respondents of rural women comprising of 60 women from each of the three selected districts of Malwa region namely, Ludhiana, Patiala and Bathinda, who had developed traditional handicrafts in their life-time was selected purposively. Older women were found to have made fifty or more traditional handicrafts from plant and agro-waste materials in their lifetime. All women used to carry out different activities of practicing craft in their leisure time such as spinning yarn on Charkha, weaving basketry products like Bohey/Chhikkoo, Katnee(s), etc. and embroidering the Phulkaris or baghs. The largest percentage of respondents (28.89%) had made Bohey/Chhikkoo followed by 19.45 per cent respondents who had made Chhabi(an) from plant and waste materials. -

JPS: 11:2 Myrvold: Wedding Ceremonies in Punjab Wedding Ceremonies in Punjab Kristina Myrvold Lund University ______________________________________________________ While the religious specificities of different religious communities are underscored, the paper focuses on the shared cultural values and symbols that frame marriage ceremonies in the Punjab. The study concludes with how ritual theories help us analyse these ceremonies and assess the impact of modernity on their nature and function. ______________________________________________________ Traditional cultural practices in a society do not fade away or disappear in the face of modernization, but rather these practices transform and even become revitalized. This is illustrated in the case of religious and cultural rituals that Punjabis perform in relation to different stages of life. Rites of passage refer to a genre of rituals that people perform at major events in life--like birth, puberty, marriage and death. These types of rites characteristically mark a person’s transition from one stage of social life to another. The authoritative traditions of the world religions have sanctioned and institutionalized their own life-cycle rituals, which the followers share across different cultural and geographical contexts. Historically, religious authorities have often displayed a keen interest in defining these rituals to mark religious boundaries. Several studies that detail how Hindus, Jains, Muslim, Sikh, and Christians celebrate the birth of a child, perform weddings, and handle death in different parts of the world. Similarly, in the Punjab the core ceremonies related to these life events are distinct for every religious community, but yet they are performed within a shared Punjabi culture. This paper focuses on marriage (viah), the most celebrated life event in Punjabi society. -
