The event aims to encourage people to incorporate 30 minutes of exercise into their daily routine — it could save their life, after all. Nearly 300 people develop diabetes in Australia every day, with two million of us currently at high risk of type 2 diabetes. However, this condition is preventable in 58 per cent of cases if people are willing to make healthy lifestyle changes, such as improving diet and doing regular physical activity. If you drove to work today, think about other ways to get 30 minutes of walking into your Friday.

Page 1 of 2 back StepintoahabitonWalktoWorkDay ARE you one of those people who always thinks about walking to work, but never gets around to it? This Friday is the day to give it a go. Walk to Work Day is an in- itiative of Diabetes Australia, intended to promote physi- cal activity and reduce the in- cidence of type two diabetes. The condition is inherited, but the risk may be reduced through exercise, healthy eating and weight loss. Personal trainer Tim Rosenzweig encouraged everyone to get active. “It’s good to just start, even if it’s something small: for instance, walking to work or walking a dog after work, or parking further away in a car park and walking the rest of the distance,”he said. “Doing those incidental activities just improves your quality of life. “When you get down the track in age, you don’t want to be stuck on the couch saying ‘I should have got into exercise 10 years ago’.” And don’t be put off by pet- richor, the smell of rain, on Friday morning; the Bureau of Meteorology is predicting a 21-degree day with only a slight chance of showers. – PERI STRATHEARN 05 Oct 2017 Murray Valley Standard, Murray Bridge SA Author: Peri Strathearn • Section: General News • Article type : News Item Classification : Regional • Audience : 2,369 • Page: 3 • Printed Size: 462.00cm² Market: SA • Country: Australia • ASR: AUD 1,027 • Words: 210 • Item ID: 854971837

Diabetes is one of the nation's biggest health problems, more than a million Australians are living with the disease and this number is rising every year. However, new research has found that just a few minutes of exercise a day could dramatically reduce your chances of contracting the disease. Today marks National Walk to Work day. Eastwood says the average adult today would move 80% less than an average adult 100 years ago, and we must inject more movement every day, saying the Walk to Work platform is about increasing our movement. Eastwood says type 2 diabetes is a complicated disease, but exercise can build our sensitivity to insulin. Eastwood says one in four people over the age of 25 are already glucose impaired, which puts them on the road to diabetes.
