SUNDAY 6th FEBRUARY 2005 WESTERN CARNEDDS (BETHESDA) A WALK Starting at Bethesda, we walk through Braich Melyn and ascend via Braich Ty Du. The route then follows the high ground over , and before returning to Bethesda. DISTANCE: 18.5km (11½ miles) 19 POINTS ASCENT 1160m (3800ft) B PLUS WALK Starting from Bethesda we head south east to the village of Gerlan. We continue south east and climb the shoulder of Mynydd Du, then up a ridge to Carnedd Dafydd. We follow the ridge north east and climb to Carnedd Llewellyn. We descend the cwm towards Yr Elen, dropping down into the valley. We then follow the stream back to Gerlan and Bethesda. (One point added for terrain) DISTANCE: 14.5km (9 miles) 16 POINTS ASCENT 915m (3000ft) B MINUS WALK Starting from Aber our route is by road and path to Aber Falls, where we turn west then north to join the North Path at Ffridd Ddu and on to Moel Wynion. From the summit we descend to Bethesda by way of Gyrn Quarry and Moel Faban. DISTANCE: 14.5km (9 miles) 13 POINTS ASCENT 610m (2000ft) C WALK From the car park in Bethesda, the route follows the A5 south to leave the village before following a path towards the Penrhyn Slate Quarries, skirting the waste heaps before joining a minor road at Ceunant (633644). At Maes-Caradoc (637627) the route crosses the valley to Ty Gwyn before the gradual ascent northwards to Cefn yr Orsedd (638650) via the crossing of Afon Berthen. The route then descends, via Forestry Commission land, to Braichmelyn (631656) and Bethesda. DISTANCE: 12.5km (7½ miles) 9½ POINTS ASCENT 290m (950ft) Please keep behind your leader at all times
