As plants mature and need additional growing space, adjacent plants are removed. Plants in the Arbore tum are pruned when they are set out but no addi tional is done except to remove dead or brok en branches. Plants are allowed to grow into their natural shape. Hollies and companion plants in the Holly Display (Compartment T) are set out following a landscape plan so that the distance be tween these plants will be variable. Proper interpretation of records is essential. Plants which succeed or fail in the Arboretum might do differently in other situations or locations. The loss of a may be due to a number of factors. Many hollies and box have been killed over the winter when they are on sites excessively wet or ex posed to the wind. The same cultivars on sites well drained and protected from the wind came through the same winter in perfect condition. Many box woods were planted on a site which appeared to be well drained. They grew well until 1972, when a wet year left parts of the area quite wet. Boxwoods in this area deteriorated rapidly. Size of plant can also have a bearing on survival. Hollies and boxwoods of the same clone were set out side by side in the nursery. Many plants less than 1 foot high were either killed or partially killed the first winter, while adjacent larger plants 1 to 2 feet high Ilex opaca 'Secrest'. -?- AQUIFOLIACEAE. HOLLY FAMILY

Two different genera of hollies have been set out in the Arboretum: !lex and Nemopanthus. The only holly found growing naturally has been Winterberry (!lex verticillata). American Holly (!lex opaca) is not native in the Wooster area but self-seeded plants are now occasionally found in the vicinity of some of the older plantings.

The first planting of holly was eight American Hollies (!lex opaca) set out in 1922 with seedlings that had been started in the Arboretum nursery in 1916. The best plant in this group of hollies was selected in 1969 and named 'Secrest'. A few hollies were set out in the early 1930's. The first sizable plantings were in 1952 and 1953 when 40 different hollies were set out. Beginning in 1969 a good many hollies have been outplanted each year. To date 188 different species, vari eties, hybrids, or cultivars have been planted with 149 still growing in the Arboretum. An additional 89 different kinds are being grown in the Arboretum propagating areas and will be planted outside as soon as the plants are large enough to have a chance of survival.

The Secrest Arboretum is one of the official Holly Display and Experimental Test Centers cooperating with the Holly Society of America, Inc. The Holly Test Garden (Plot 06) was started in 1969. Currently there are 91 different hollies in this planting. An addi tional 16 different types have died. The first holly plantings in the Holly Display Garden (Plot T) were set out in the spring of 1972. Eventually a good many of the different hollies that are hardy around Wooster will be planted in the Display Garden.

In general, most of the evergreen hollies in the Arboretum have not grown too well on wet or poorly drained sites. Many small plants have died within one or two years when planted on such a site. They usually die during the winter. An exception is Inkberry (!lex glabra) which is growing rather well on a wet site but has died on a site where there is standing water for long periods. Some of the deciduous hollies such as Winterberry (!lex verticillata) have also made good growth on wet sites.

English Holly is generally considered to be hardy in Plant Hardiness Zone 7, where average annual minimum temperatures are between 0°F. and 10°F., or Zone 6, where average annual minimum temperatures are from -10°F. to 0°F. Wooster is in Plant Hardiness Zone 5, where average annual minimum temperatures can be expected from -20°F. to -10°F. Five different cultivars survived for 11 years until 1963 when temperatures fell to -20°F. during January and February. All existing English Hollies in the Arboretum were killed. Status

A good many American Hollies will have their leaves "winter burned" when planted on sites exposed to strong winds. These same cultivars will hold the green color in their leaves when planted on sites pro tected from the winds. Several American Hollies in Plot D6 are growing quite slowly as they are set out near a planting of Sugar Maple and they are suffering from root competition with the larger Maples. These are the culti vars 'Goldie', 'Manig', 'Yule', 'Mrs. F. J. Close', and 'Ling'.

Buxus sempervirens 'Asheville', a box which has survived temperatures to -20° F. -23- BUXACEAE. BOX FAMILY

Three different genera in the Box Family have been set out in the Arboretum or on the Campus of the Ohio Agricultural Research and Development Center: Buxus, Pachysandra, and Sarcococca. None of the plants are native to the Wooster area. The first box to be set out in the Arboretum was Asheville Common Box (Buxus sempervirens 'Asheville'). During 1923, six specimens of this cultivar were planted and have grown well ever since. Some 82 different kinds of boxwood have been set out since the initial plantings in 1923 and 54 of these are still alive. Seventeen of those remaining are not named and as they are not growing too well and are quite small they have not been included in the following listing.
