I hope you enjoy reading this publication and learning more about our program, athletics department and university. The main thing you need to know about this program is the philosophy by which we operate. We will work hard. We will play hard and we will have fun. I want our players, coaches and staff to become a very important part of this community. We proudly represent our university and the Hokie Nation. We will be involved in all the positive aspects of this community and will give as much or more to the Hokie Nation as we are fortunate enough to receive. If you see one of us out in the community, please stop and say hello. We want to get to know as many of our fans as possible. We will ask you to come and support this team because you are a major part of everything we do. It is my privilege to be in charge of this program. I am fortunate that we have a roster full of outstanding young men who will do things the right way and be positive role models in this community. As for the Pride, Mo Cassara’s group could be one of the most underrated in the area. Sure, Charles Jenkins and Greg Washington are gone, but Mike Moore, David Imes, Stevie Mejia, Nathaniel Lester and Shemiye McLendon are all experienced players. It should be a good one in Hempstead. Stony Brook at Indiana, 7:00: Stony Brook and its followers have waited an entire off season for this matchup. With so much talent back and several newcomers expected to create an immediate impact, no one would be shocked to see the Seawolves win this game. Senior guard Bryan Dougher, redshirt junior forward Tommy Brenton and senior Dallis Joyner have been the key elements to Stony Brook’s rise. The Seawolves have had winning seasons two of the last three years and have finished .500 or better in the America East the last three years.

    2013-14 VIRGINIA TECH BASKETBALL Head Coach James Johnson 2013-14 VIRGINIA TECH BASKETBALL A MESSAGE TO TECH SUPPORTERS This is a very exciting time for the Virginia Tech men’s basketball team. We look forward to a season that will bring in new faces and new challenges. It should be a season of excitement and of improvement. The thing I have noticed about this group through the summer and the preseason is their willingness to work. I stated often last season that I never had to coach effort and this season, that same spirit has been evident since day one. This group of players shows up ready to do their best, regardless of whether it’s on the court, in the weight room or in the classroom. They are always ready to take a step forward. During the last year, we have made very substantial strides in shaping this program into a group that makes this University proud. We have become more involved in campus and community projects and have comported ourselves in a manner expected of Virginia Tech students and student-athletes. We strive to make this team YOUR team. It has meant so much to the team and me that you stop us on the street, in restaurants and out in public and greet us all so warmly. I believe this partnership has gotten off to a wonderful start and will only grow stronger. January 3, 1992 – Larry Johnson becomes the first Hornets player to be named NBA Rookie of the Month, winning the award for the month of December. January 3, 2002 – Baron Davis records his third career triple-double in a 114-102 win over Golden State. January 3, 2005 – For the second time in as many months, Emeka Okafor earns the Eastern Conference Rookie of the Month award for the month of December 2004.
